Background

Though Taryn Thorne was born into a relatively wealthy family in the city of Ul'dah, brought up to take over the family business in the event of his father's passing, events never quite played out that way. The inheritance that should have been his ended up instead under the control of his uncle, a man who schemed and manipulated his way to a fortune and would have seen his nephew dead and buried in order to obtain his aim.

When his uncle tried to have him assassinated in order to take control of the family fortune, a betrayal made worse by the family relationship between the two, he didn’t react by challenging him head on in a fight he knew he had little chance of winning. Rather he adopted more subtle means to bring the man to ruin.

At first he tried to find a way to reclaim his stolen fortune. But by the time he had recovered from the attempt on his life and returned to Ul’dah the family wealth and its associated business were already in the hands of his scheming uncle and he had been declared officially dead. Though he could have stepped forward and shown that he was very much alive, he knew that it would take substantial effort to prove that he was who he claimed to be and not simply an imposter, and his uncle would undoubtedly have had him killed as soon as he so much as stuck his head above water.

Utilising what he knew of his uncle he bided his time, watching the man’s activities closely until he had something that could be used against him. Eventually the man had to slip and Taryn had every intention of being there when it happened.

It didn’t take too long.

Gaining access to his uncle’s estate was easy enough, once he knew how to do it. Creating substantially convincing evidence of shady dealings was a little harder, but eventually he had everything he needed to set up his uncle’s fall. The fact that the man had indeed been involved in some rather shady dealings of late only served to substantiate the highly detailed reports he made sure fell into the hands of the city’s authorities. If the man had been completely clean he would have had little to worry about… well, maybe.

The fallout eventually led, as he had hoped, to his uncle's arrest and the dismantling of his company. After his uncle’s arrest Taryn left the city of Ul’dah but not before making sure the man knew exactly who had orchestrated his downfall; sending him a special ‘gift’ to ensure the point was made.
