Vincent Belsara (pronounced /ˈVin-Sent Bell-Sar-Rah/) (12th Sun, 5th Umbral Moon (Oct 12th)) is a Hyur Midlander, self-proclaimed Paladin with a tendency to meddle in the affairs of others. A swashbuckler of sorts who likes to help out wherever he can, and a member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Abducted at a young age and raised and trained in the Garlean Empire as a spy, he escaped their clutches as a teen, lived as a thief in Limsa Lominsa until The Calamity struck, and stole his family from him. Following The Calamity, Vincent took up the sword he had laid down after escaping the Empire and began journeying across Eorzea, looking to help anyone he could while improving himself through trial and training. A young man with a smart mouth and a skilled sword-arm, and a heart of gold beneath it all.

(This Vincent is actually based off of another Vincent Belsara that exists outside of Eorzea)

1542-1561

Childhood

Vincent was born in La Noscea, and for the first seven years of his life, had a relatively ordinary childhood living with his mother, and for a brief while, his younger sister. Around age seven however, he and his younger sister were abducted by the Garlean Empire, taken to Garlemald, and used as a form of ransom to ensure the loyalty of their mother as a spy for the Empire.

Though a hostage of the Empire, Vincent was not ill-treated, nor was his sister, for they had been abducted as part of a program to home-grow spies for the Empire of native Eorzean descent. As a result they were fed well, finely clothed and well-trained, except for when they expressed disobedience or insubordination.

The siblings were separated for training purposes a short while into their stay in Garlemald, with Vincent being deemed more appropriate for physical training, while his sister more valuable for arcane studies. It was as a result of this that Vincent met his mentor and swordmaster, an Elezen by the name of Akataras Arriona. The two were initially at odds with each other, until over time they developed a begrudging respect for one another over their mutual hatred for The Empire. Arriona also taught Vincent the importance of concealing one's hate for The Empire, and simply playing along to their machinations, a lesson that served both of them well.

As a result of this, Vincent became a dutiful and loyal apprentice to Akataras, and began to excel in his studies of martial form, moving beyond the more simple elements of swordplay and combat prowess quickly. It was as a result of this bond that they formed, and the loyalty they had to one another, that Vincent and his sister where able to escape from Garlean influence just before Vincent reached his teens.

The master risked all to ensure his apprentice's safety and freedom, but ultimately remained behind to cover their escape, and only their escape. After a hasty flight onto Lominsan shores, stowed away on an airship, the siblings ultimately had one final confrontation with a small band of Garlean troops in pursuit of them once their disappearance was noted, but were ultimately able to make it far enough into Lominsan territory that the Empire couldn't risk pursuing them further.

Vincent would not hear from or see his mentor again for many many years, and despite achieving freedom from Garlemald, his struggles were just beginning.

Teenage

Entering into his teens, Vincent had managed to escape the immediate clutches of the Garlean Empire, with his sister in tow.

Despite the success of their escape, years in Garlemald and the final events that had led up to their tentative freedom had left Vincent paranoid and on edge. (Vincent in particular, was the most rattled of the pair, and refused to pick up his weapon of choice, paling if he even so much looked at a sword.) As a result, he and his sister did not reach out to any Lominsan citizens, Yellowjackets, or Maelstrom soldiers for aid, instead trusting only each other, and travelling the long road to Limsa Lominsa using the skills they had gained in their years of training under The Empire.

Being an adept young pickpocket, with agility and stealth on his side, Vincent was able to steal as much as they needed to get by, new clothes, food, weapons, tools, gil. Anything he could get his hands on that he thought someone wouldn't miss or need more than them, he would find a way to acquire it. The journey was long, and fraught with peril, but the two eventually made it to Limsa Lominsa, and from there left the city in search of their family home in the Moraby Bay area.

However, when they arrived where their home should have been, they found it burnt to the ground, with their mother nowhere to be found. Carefully, they asked around regarding the whereabouts of their mother, but in the end learned only that she had disappeared one night, and no-one knew where she had gone.

Disheartened, but not without hope, nor willing to give up, the pair returned to Limsa Lominsa, and lived for a time as pickpockets on the streets. Managing to avoid the attention of any Upright Thieves (Or at least, they thought so) for some time, stealing what they needed from wealthier nobles, cutthroat pirates, and people that could easily afford paying for that fourth solid gold earring again if it just happened to disappear one day. Amidst the hustle and bustle of a busy settlement of ships, sailors and merchants like Limsa Lominsa, no-one really paid much attention to another two young urchins wandering the streets.

Slowly but surely, Vincent would regain some of the confidence he lost in the night of their escape, and took up the blade again, starting with a dagger, and began working his way up to using a shortsword without hesitation. It took time, but they both worked hard to build the meagre savings they could pocket, while still keeping themselves fed. (They eventually stopped stealing everything and anything they needed, and focused on gil, opting to buy what they needed out of the gil they stole) The two had decided they would look into their mother's disappearance once they had raised enough gil to travel, should the need arise, and in the space of just a year or so, their confidence grew in strides.

However, before Vincent's resolve could return in its entirety, and the pair begin their search in earnest, The Calamity struck.

On the night of The Calamity, Vincent and his sister were traversing one of the towers of Limsa Lominsa, when Bahamut's roar rang out across Eorzea. Vincent and his sister froze in place, with his sister a few paces ahead.

A blast from Bahamut's attack struck the tower between where they were stood, Vincent was thrown back, an arm and leg broken, with the leg trapped under rubble, while his sister fell from the hole in the tower that opened around her. Vincent watched her fall from the tower before slipping into unconsciousness, and did not see his sister vanish beneath the waves.

For a month following The Calamity, he lay comatose in the care of The Maelstrom, one of many injured, wounded, or dead as a result of Bahamut's attack on Eorzea. Upon awakening, he asked of his sister, and incidentally gave their family name. He learned that day that he had not only lost a sister to the Battle of Cartaneux, but a mother as well. She had laid down her life in defence of Eorzea, against the Garlean Empire, and was counted among the number of heroes that perished on those fields that day.

For a time, Vincent was buried beneath his grief, and while still recovering from his injuries, remained in the care of The Maelstrom. Throughout this period of time, he began to have nightmares, of not only his sister's fall, but of monstrous dragons and ferocious god-like beings, the likes of which Vincent had never seen and only heard of, yet the vivid nature of his dreams chilled him to the bone. He saw battlefields and fallen heroes, gods and monsters, dragons and voidsent, faces he'd never known, enemies he'd long since escaped, and one night, he saw a Crystal, more beautiful to him than anything he had ever seen. It shone with more than just light to him, it shone with life, with hope, it was a beacon in the darkness and the despair. He clung to that dream, and soon enough the monsters in his dreams almost never came, and when they did, he cut them down with a blade borne of light, and a smile that shone.

Eventually, he recovered from his wounds, though not his grief and one morning, when at last he was due to be released from The Maelstrom's care, on the eve of his birthday, he awoke to find that someone had left him a gift. They had not left a name, and none of The Maelstrom soldiers Vincent asked seemed to be able to recall their face.

He opened the gift, and found within it a letter that said simply, with no signature: "It was your mother's." Alongside the letter was a small crystal earring, of a soothing blue shade. Vincent recalled it from his childhood, and recognised the truth of the letter's words. At once emotion overtook him, and he clutched it tightly, warm in his touch, and wept. For all he had lost, for all that he had had stolen from him, to have even something so small restored to him was a blessing.

With a little more time, as Vincent focused on training himself to restore the strength he had lost while injured, his grief faded. He had the earring fashioned into a necklace, and began wearing it always. When he felt strong enough, he buckled a shortsword to his hip, threw a cloak around his shoulders, and clutched his precious necklace tightly as he left the safety of Lominsa's walls for the first time since The Calamity.

He visited a monument to those that died at Cartaneau, and made a promise to those he had lost, to fulfill his childish dream, and become a hero. He wanted to be strong enough that he could save people from the pain he had endured, that he could fight through the pain and save people even when all seems lost, like his sister, and stand tall in the face of death, without fear, knowing that in the end, his sacrifice would mean something, like his mother. Taking the lessons of his mentor to heart, and with a new wanderlust kindled in his heart, Vincent returned to Lominsa, collected the savings he and his sister had built up, and paid for passage to Thanalan onboard a merchant ship.

And thus did Vincent Belsara take his first steps beyond Lominsan shores that was of his choosing. Without gil, he knew he wouldn't be able to afford armour, or maintain the strength to protect people, and he had resolved to keep his thieving days behind him in favour of his new life in the wake of his Promise. He knew he wasn't yet ready to protect people, but he also knew he was good in a fight, and so Vincent began his life in Ul'Dah as a gladiator, forgoing his surname that The Empire have less hope of finding him in the wake of the discord of The Calamity.

Vincent Belsara would come to be known as Vincent Bladesong, and his first true steps on the road to becoming the hero he had sworn to be, began.

RELATIONS

Romantic Interest     Platonic Love      Good Standing     Poor Standing
#REDIRECT Akataras Arriona - Vincent's mentor and swordmaster, who he met during his years as a hostage in Garlemald. The two have had a strained but devoted relationship with one another over the years, and recent revelations regarding his mentor have reshaped how the two interact. Regardless of it all however, they remain fearlessly devoted and loyal to one another, even if their stance in their world can be on opposite sides at times.
#REDIRECT E'lario Tia - One of the owners of the Gold-Coeurl Crystal Company, a young Miqo'te that Vincent befriended (and shamelessly flirted with in an attempt to seduce) in Ul'Dah. Following the reveal of and subsequent Monetarist spin placed upon Vincent's past that ruined his contacts and reputation, both E'lario and his business partner offered Vincent a job in a freelance capacity as a bodyguard for their shipments. As a result of this, Vincent is not a part of the company itself, but receives payment from them on a commission basis, when his assistance is needed. Due to his commitment to the Scions however, and the fact that the company has more than enough gil for other hirelings, Vincent's recent dealings with the company can be infrequent, at least in a professional capacity.
#REDIRECT Dietrich Dracht - One of the owners of the Gold-Coeurl Crystal Company, a hyur with whom Vincent's has argued on numerous occasions. With an extreme difference in ideologies it's genuinely surprising that the two have never come to blows. All the same, they maintain a begrudging friendship (it's really more of a friendly rivalry) built upon snark, banter and frequent insults tossed at each other like confetti.
