History/Timeline

Childhood:

Ayame lived with her mother, Rin Shirohana, and her father, Kuga Shirohana, in a small cottage, hidden in the woods in Doma. They were living in complete isolation from other Domans and from Garleans, hiding away from both, although she never heard her parents explaining why are they doing that.

Being raised, pretty much alone, by her parents, Ayame was growing and experiencing the world in a very sheltered and weird environment. She didn’t trust anyone or anything, apart from her parents and what they shown her. On the other hand, despite this unfriendly attitude she developed, she was very curious of the world around her and she cherished what little she could experience.

Most of her days she’d spend with her father, hunting, or tending the garden, full of white flowers (the reason behind Shirohana name, as both her parents were commoners, which they continuosly highlighted) or singing and playing lute with her mother, reading books or writing her thoughts and secrets in a small notebook. She enjoyed reading books about things she never witnessed, about the sea, sand, other lands, like Eorzea. Her mother used to travel in the past and she brought some books from that foreign land, which eventually served Ayame as a way of learning language, which she decided to pick up out of boredom.

Wind of Change:

Some Domans never accepted the reign of Garlemald Empire over their land and Ayame’s parents were part of that group. Despite their isolation from people of Doma, their hearts were waiting for a spark to ignite the revolution. Rather than looking for a spark however, they tried to stay away from trouble for as long as it was possible, but eventually the trouble came on its own.

When Ayame was 13 her father decided that she may hunt on her own, at least for the smaller prey. Everything was going fine and she turned out to be quite capable, even alone, however one day she had not returned at the usual hour.

The girl, stalking her prey, got careless and strayed too far from her home, and she got caught by a group of Garlean soldiers who were looking for rebels in the woods. Soldiers thought her to be one of the insurgents, so they tortured her in hopes of getting information. Girl eventually told them about her parents’ cottage and was left alone in a cage in the woods, as the soldiers headed towards her house.

She did not know how long she was there, but eventually her mother arrived to the abandoned by Garleans camp. She was deadly injured, but she has opened the cage with a key and without a word, passed away. Not long after, Ayame’s father arrived and sent his daughter away to home. Terrified of what happened girl, returned home alone and she remained there waiting for her parents to return.

She was waiting for 3 days until her father arrived. She hurried to welcome him, to find some comfort in his arms, but this never happened. Man’s face was full of anger and his left arm was missing.

Death:

What followed these events were months of hatred. She did not find comfort in presence of her father, as he did not intend to offer anything like that. Blaming Ayame for death of his wife, loss of his arm, for the misfortune that fallen at them, he was boiling with anger and there was only one person on which he could unleash the emotions raging inside him.

For over a year, everyday, Ayame was first making sure that she hunts, gathers fruits, roots and vegetables, prepares meals and cleans the house, only to become a victim of physical and mental abuse coming from her father. Not knowing anything except of the little cottage and the cruelty of people outside their forest, she couldn’t bring herself to just get away.

For over a year, she was listening that her mother died because of her, that she is a worthless thing, not worthy being considered a person. She was beaten up and her mentality was trashed. At one point she broke and gave up. She gathered poisonous roots and shrooms and prepared a potion out of that, then drank it all and prayed to the Spirits for mercy over her pathetic soul.

Born anew:

When she woke up, she didn’t remember what happened. In fact, she didn’t remember anything. A tall man with one arm, was standing at the other end of the room, preparing some sort of a potion, while she was in a bed.

Her father found her and quickly prepared an antidote for the potion she prepared. Although it saved her life, she lost all of her memories. Her personality has developed anew, based on what she learned from a notebook she used to write in before her mother died and what her father told her.

As for Kuga, he changed a lot and he never again has raised a finger on her. He never told her about what was going on after his wife died and when he was asked why did Ayame lost her memory, he kept it to a short “accident”. He initially tried to avoid his daughter as much as it was possible, but during these short moments, when they were eating or tending the garden together, he’d tell her how she was before her mother died.

Departure:

After 2 years, Ayame developed a new, in many aspects very different personality. Her father did hunt on his own, despite having just one arm and she was never leaving the house, however she felt the urge to see the world.

When during a meal, she shared this wish with her father, who, although didn’t seem to approve, decided to help her see a different world. He left the house and returned several days later, asking Ayame to pack most important things for the journey. He also gave her an eorzean dictionary, so she could improve her language and took her from home, to the river not far from their forest, where there was a man, a Hyur, waiting on her with a small boat, which carried her to Eorzea.
