Chaie Rosespear
IX - THE SHAMAN
The bright crescent's moon, or the charming flower of the lotus? / The honey in a flower, or the lustre of the full moon? / A pure coral gem, or the pleasant chatter of parrots? Omanathinkal Kidavo by Irayimman Thampi [1812], translation by A. H. Fox Strangways, from the book The Music of Hindoostan

Tucked in a little village of the East Shroud, lives a little family of two; Chaie Rosespear, an apothecary-slash-herbalist and her daughter-slash-student-slash-protegée, three year old Mimina Mina. The Little Ala Mhigan maid, fairly hailed not only for her deep knowledge of curative botanica, and a careful analysis of a patient's particular needs and ailments, Chaie is also fair on chiropractic and urgent treatment of a wounded patient. Her talents are attributed to her more celebrated and renowned master, Mumuni Muni, who gained fame for her almost miraculous talents and had patients from all around Eorzea, anxiously waiting a consult- before her tragic demise birthing her daughter. It can be said with much security, then, that what drives Chaie forward is not quite to seize the fame and glory her master reclutantly carried, but to be able to make the late apothecary proud and to set an example for her protegée and student, Mimina, who she hopes will want to follow the art that has been carried for two generations. Chaie- and her brother, Duein's parents, Frida and Mani Rosespear, were two members of the Maaso settlement; a group of families living by the south of Gyr Abania, near the city-state of Ala Mhigo. The Maaso, rich with ancient customs despite being a small community, were accepted as brothers by the Ala Mhigans during the escape to Thanalan, where Little Ala Mhigo was formed; there was Chaie born, a weak, sickly child unfitting of the standards of beauty set to Ala Mhigans during her childhood. A meek, frail girl next to her tall, confident brother- they were Chaie and Duein, close as two coats of paint- but where Chaie looked at curanderism and was taken in by Mumuni, Duein looked at greater goals- like avenging the motherland. And so, at the young age of eighteen, Duein left to become one of the first Ala Mhigan revolutionary squadrons- only to never be heard of again. Often are the days Chaie mourns for what she believes to be her late brother, and her late master- yet, careful to step her 'mother' out of her wallowing, Mimina shines like a beacon on the light- giving the maid purpose and duty for her life.
Dark of skin and august of gait, Chaie stands at five fulms and six ilms; way below average height for the average Highlander; stress, malnutrition and dehydration suffered by Frida Rosespear caused her child to be born with many health deficiencies. A virtually inexistent immune system causes the girl to sicken with extreme ease- and, at times, that much is visible to the naked eye. During particularly bad days- these happening too frequently for her liking- her dark bronze skin tone blends with an unhealthy pallor, resulting in an almost yellow, greyish tint, blossoming with a lace-like purplish tonality in spots.
Mottled-looking skin usually coaxed with shea oils, obvious dark circles, blossoming in purples and dark blues, concealed with makeup; Wild, short hair carefully taken care of, and on bad days, held up or covered with cloths. Chaie carries the smell of jasmines, sourced from a small cologne bottle she carries all the time, to hide the imaginary, imminent smell of illness that she is constantly paranoid about emitting. Not oft is she seen without her family's emblem facepaint- one she proudly wears, applying the white thick. As for her bone structure, her jaw is soft-lined; her nose is a bit wide and her lips are full and the most notable part of her face. he is naught often seen without rouge on. Her black eyes are quite intense; in the sense that they are framed by deep, dark circles and quite eerily long eyelashes. Her brows, which usually rest hidden between bushy bangs, show a permanent motion of concern. Despite being a very thin and small child on her childhood, as of a couple of years she has gained a bit more weight, something she is undoubtedly glad about. Rounded hips and quite full thighs accompany a soft stomach. Her muscle definition is practically nonexistent, and it is quite easy for almost anyone to beat her in a hypothetical fight. Aspects That Stand Out:
Chaie is, in many aspects, a very contrasting person; while there is a sheer passion deep inside her soul, the body she was born in allows her no form of physical outing for that intensity, instead providing only a flickering, fragile flame. This, of course, did not befit the standards of Highland ideality and beauty, resulting in a deep grounding bitterness and rage. She is quick to burn out, and as such, much of her energy is stuck within her, forcing her to keep her emotions to herself. Thus, she is secretive, and spins from periods of self-pity and self-rejection with ease. Prone to intense envy and wrath, she is not one to place her mind above her heart, and when scorned, she will almost never forgive with ease. Very supersticious and negative in her thoughts, she can be described as a 'bitter' person by one who sees into her thought currents. While a deeply caring person to those she loves and cherishes, she can be a bit of a 'smother', and can quickly overwhelm with her manners of showing affection, and protection. Overbearing and overnurturing.
Despite her undeniable proneness to negativity and jealousy, she is a very strong sympathizer- and holds a very, very strong sense of condolence; a naturally nurturing person who wishes the best for her close folks and is wholeheartedly prepared to accompany them along the way. She is passionate, and easy to befriend; thoughtful, tender, and eager to help. Very motherly and likes her job as a healer, as she appreciates being able to improve people's lives without burning herself out in the process; she often likes to check on past patients to see how they are doing. She’d be much more keen on adventuring or doing any sort of grand, exciting quests, yet at the same time she is a strong conformist who is content with what she has in life. In her speech, she is witty, and appreciates showing concern as a form of showing her care for a person. Likes to talk about politics, and gets very very passionate about her viewpoints- however, she appreciates friendly banter and small talking. At times, she is often short of breath for speaking too fast, and she often sighs of huffs to catch her breath before finishing speaking- it's embarassing for her, and she often covers her mouth so it is not as visible; or so she thinks. Firm opposer of the phrase 'the ends justify the means', and very hesistant to cooperate with anyone who fares from Garlean lands. She is a firm believer of karmic processes, and avoids doing hurtful deeds- at times, not so much as to not hurt the other person, but to avoid finding her own comeuppance. Quite clever, yet easy to become distracted during lectures and academic purposes.
