[edit]

GENERAL INFORMATION

Charlemont Mercaiges (or Char, as his casual acquaintances call him) is a 23 year old Duskwight knight in the employ of House Sartigault, a vassal house under Dzemael. He is largely avoided by those in the House, considered laconic yet fervid, and barely but always obedient in service to his Lord and Lady. Charlemont accepts and completes his duties professionally and efficiently, proving himself to be a dependable knight for the house despite his often intense countenance. The Duskwight naturally carries himself with an air of refinement beyond his station, and smoothly changes the subject when queried about his past. He is rarely seen twice in the company of the same lady or gentleman after hours, though he can often spied alone in a bar or restaurant in the evenings, preferring to take his meals out. Char possesses a marked penchant for clear liquor over the typically preferred Ishgardian red wine, though he does have a fondness for mulled wine.

APPEARANCE

Char is usually remembered by his odd golden eyes standing against his dusky skin and greyish-navy hair, which is typically always kept in a bun. His high, chiseled cheekbones and elegantly sculpted eyebrows give him a certain effortless intensity and ferocity. He favors small gold earrings and little other jewelry with the occasional exception of a ring or two. Standing at 6 fulms, eight ilms, Charlemont is taller than your average Duskwight. Fit, long & lean, and elegantly muscular, his training and duty as a house knight keeps him strong and in shape, and it shows in both his armor and expensive, tailored clothing.
Aspects That Stand Out:
Often dresses and acts slightly above his station as a house knight, though naturally so.
His voice has a bit of an odd, refined, perhaps even slow cadence until he is angered.
His eyes are a shade of gold that often seems intense or eerie, and in contrast to his skin.

PERSONALITY

To those who have only glimpsed Char, the man seems quiet and stern with a certain air of inborn superiority. He tends to be a bit of a loner and maintains most everyone at a certain distance. Privately, Charlemont attacks his interests and hobbies with an unparalleled fervor. He will often become obsessed with his current project and pour himself into it. He never burns himself out or loses momentum, however, always managing to meter and pace himself in his endeavors. The fire burns long and sustained as opposed to fast and hot. When the outcome of his work benefits him, he will always apply himself tirelessly until his end goal is reached.

Char is a passionate, sensual individual. He holds a great appreciation for physical beauty, and does not deny himself the opportunity to share his bed with whomever strikes his fancy. He isn't one, however, to invest himself in romantic relationships, particularly monogamous ones. One night is enough for him, and the occasion that it happens twice with the same person is rare. Char values his freedom, his privacy, and his right to bed who he pleases when he pleases.

The Duskwight is quick to anger over small things, and large things tend to produce a more controlled burn from him. He manages to keep his temper in check when it comes to serving the Lord and Lady of the Sartigault house, and very rarely does he cause a scene in public. Charlemont takes care to blend into his surroundings as best he can, stay away from gossip, and cause no one to find fault with his service. Underneath his perfected professional facade, though, the man tends to be intense, irritable, resentful, and quiet.

L I K E S

Clear liquor. Charlemont has a marked preference for clear liquors like vodka and gin as opposed to the much favored Ishgardian red wine. Mulled wine, however, is also a favorite of his.
Honey muffins. His favorite snack, and one rarely if ever found in Ishgard. He often has them sent in from Gridania.
Books. A lovely library is nestled in Char's apartment, with quite a few rare and sought after texts, not to mention special books from his childhood.
Sleep. When tired and at leisure to do so, Charlemont will often sleep for 12 bells at a time and luxuriate in his bed even after he's woken.

D I S L I K E S

Cold weather. Ishgard's climate since the calamity does not suit him at all. Char builds lots of fires in his apartment.
Pomp and circumstance. Ishgardian finery and gossip rubs him the wrong way and he stays away from it unless absolutely necessary.
Bold women. Nothing turns Char off faster than a pretty woman who knows she's pretty and thinks she can have whoever she wants.

H O B B I E S

Piano. Known to very few, Char is an experienced and talented piano player. He has an upright in his apartment that he imported from Ul'dah.
Thaumaturgy. Proficient in both fire and ice magic, the study of thaumaturgy is something Charlemont takes very seriously.
Hiking. Most often in La Noscea, Charlemont enjoys a nice hike over varied terrain, and tries to get away from Ishgard to do it at least once a moon.

S T R E N G T H S

Patience. Charlemont is not an instant gratification type of person. When the circumstances are right, he will attack. But when they are not, he will tirelessly and patiently work for them.
Dedication. He does not easily give up on a task and will persevere until a solution can be had from his own blood, sweat, and tears.
Deception. Ser Mercaiges is an exceptional liar. Period.

W E A K N E S S E S

Temperamental. Charlemont tends toward irritability on an average day and can vacillate from there to either outright violent anger or a pleasant, joking mood.
Mistrustful. Chances are, if you know Char, he does not trust you fully, nor will he ever. He is never on anyone's side but his own and is certain that given the chance, most people will stab you in the back.
Hard. In all aspects of his life, Charlemont is hard. Hard to get to know, hard to deal with, hard to talk to, hard to accept for who he is.

M O T I V A T I O N S

Living comfortably - Char has plenty of secrets to hide and a past he'd like to be largely disassociated from. His main motivation for his day to day existence is maintaining a level of comfort and freedom not afforded to many. In order to do this, he restrains his true personality in public as much as he can in order to simply blend into the background and do his job.

RELATIONSHIP STATUS LEGEND
Family Involved Romantic Platonic Physical Friend Acquaintance $ Business Deceased Positive Negative Neutral Unsure
FAMILY
[REDACTED] Mother & Father ( ) - [REDACTED]
Character's Thoughts: "I do not regularly speak to my mother and father. They have their own lives, wholly separate from mine. It's better this way."
Char has no complaints about the way he was raised or his relationship with his parents. He visits them occasionally and indulges their desire for updates about his life and their concern for his well being. However, he considers their job rearing him as complete, and for their guidance he gives his thanks. While he does see them more often than he sees his sister, their relationship is not terribly close.
[REDACTED] Sister ( ) - The Velvet Moon
Character's Thoughts: "We are currently estranged due to... circumstances. She played a big part in my teenage years, however. I wish her the best."
Charlemont and his older sister have spoken rarely during the past few years. They do not keep contact with one another despite going through some intensities in their relationship. While he is aware of her residence and current life, she does not have knowledge of the same regarding him. As far as Char knows.
NON-FAMILY
Emon'i de Allond ( ) - The Woman
Character's Thoughts: "Utterly and completely infuriating. I loathe her very presence yet desire nothing more than to argue with her. Rude, confrontational, and totally alluring. "
Viscountess de Allond knows how to push all of Char's buttons, both delicious and terrible. The good and bad aspect of this is that he knows how to do exactly the same to her. They can often be found either found yelling at each other in a bar or staring tense daggers into each others' eyes from across a crowded room. No one is really sure of their true relationship - not even them.
Raven Alderscorn ( $ ) - Lord of House Alderscorn
Character's Thoughts: "Ser Raven is an efficient businessman with an attention to detail unparalleled by any other gentleman in the import/export business."
Charlemont and Raven do frequent, regular business together. Char respects him not only for his discretion in his professional dealings, his choice in alcohol, and his non-reluctance to have dealings with people of all races. While he might actually be racist, it's not something that he lets taint his business contracts. Char tentatively trusts Raven and enjoys their banter in letters and the occasional chance meeting.
Abelaire Cygnnoire ( ) - Fortune Teller
Character's Thoughts: "What can I say about Abel? I'm irresistibly attracted to him. Gods."
Charlemont and Abelaire became quickly involved with each other after a chance meeting in Limsa when Char heard tell of a wandering fortune teller. What he did not expect was an impossibly handsome Duskwight with light blue eyes that seemed to draw him in. And Abel didn't expect to see golden ones that did the same to him. They've been... slightly obsessive about each other ever since.

RUMORS

N P C

Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!
"Ser Mercaiges? Ah, he's a bit... terse, really. Nary a word to say to anyone unless he's spoken to, and then not much. Always sounds rather refined, though. I suppose his parents taught him quite well. Educated as a highborn, it would seem."
"Who? Oh, that grey-headed chap? Always got his hair in a bun? Yeh, I seen him. Hangs around in bars a lot, eatin' dinner and drinkin'. I reckon he ain't got no family ta speak of."
◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
"Oh, Good Halone, that man! I don't know how it is that Viscountess de Allond isn't terrified of him! I've seen them arguing in public as if they truly hated one another! He seems so... intense!"
"Sometimes I wonder if mayhaps the good ser has some health problems? Ah, it really isn't my place to say things like that. I simply worry. I've seen him trudge home after a long day and sometimes he seems utterly exhausted."
◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!
"I've delivered a couple packages to his place before. Unmarked, like. Brown parchment n' all that. Dunno where they comin' from, but they show up once a moon or so."

ಌ OOC NOTES ಌ

OOC INFORMATION

Player Note
Charlemont Mercaiges is not quite the individual that he portrays himself as. I have decided, since it is currently very early on in my career roleplaying him, to keep his "true identity" a secret even OOC for now. It is absolutely ascertainable by certain characters provided their story plays out that way. However, he is highly secretive over his past, and so I am. I will drop little tidbits here and there, as I have throughout this wiki, but a very few people know of Char's true story OOC, and only one IC.

As far as roleplaying in general goes, I like to have a certain friendly rapport with those who I RP with. Writing takes communication and openness, which I expect from an RP partner at all times. I am a friendly individual and I love to plan and plot and squee over storylines with people. I can't imagine a scenario where I never spoke to an RP partner OOC, so if you're looking for that kind of dynamic I'm the wrong person for you.
Personal RP Limits
Mm, godmoding and metagaming in general are bad, mmk? Don't do them. I'm honestly a pretty happy-go-lucky player, and if you ever have any questions about what might or might not be okay with me, just ask! Other than that, I suppose the following are my only hard and fast rules:
I will play Mature themes, slice of life, erotic themes, lore-bending (to an extent) and anything not mentioned below
I won't play Death, dismemberment or disfiguration unless agreed upon by both parties, animal abuse or death. There may be other things I haven't identified here because I simply haven't thought of them, but that's what communication is all about, mm?
Disclaimer
Little Tidbits.
I am not my characters and my characters are not me. While I do prefer to have a nice OOC relationship with those I RP with, I expect all my partners to understand and abide by the difference between in character emotions and out of character emotions. Please do not be afraid to open OOC dialogue with me if you feel anything seems off to you.

CHARACTER TIDBITS

Potential Plot Hooks
I'm generally not a walk-up type of person, but some potential hooks for Char might include:
Having a connection to House Dzemael or House Sartigault.
Noticing an incongruity in his demeanor or tendencies.
Being a pale Midlander or Wildwood woman.
Character Lore Adherence
I have actually done a lot of research regarding the events in game pertaining to Charlemont's back story, and while we are not given definitive answers about a lot of said lore I have gleaned as best I can from the RPC forums what I believe to be accurate. I appreciate creativity in storylines and plots, and I do not mind a certain amount of lore bending. At the end of the day, after all, we are all playing imaginary cops and robbers with finger guns. It is not my job to police your story, nor would I want it to be. I believe in adhering to lore in general, though there will always be situations and instances where it's either not possible or things have been interpreted incorrectly. I do not knowingly break lore. I'm here to have fun, though, and I hope you are too!
