Biography
Cirque grew up in Bentbranch Meadows with his father (Eincrad Arcana - a warrior) and his mother (Harmony Arcana - no specialized training). He was a sickly young cat, and was actually pronounced dead upon birth. It was a full two minutes before the mysterious being that was Hydaelyn intervened and brought life back to the corpse, granting Cirque the Echo (in line with the FFXIV lore).
The Miqo'te child had a rather dull, typical life living in Bentbranch. His parents were outliers, not belonging to any particular Keeper of the Moon clan, and had chosen (on Harmony's whims) to settle down in Bentbranch before having Cirque. Being that his health was still often in poor shape, he was often kept indoors or was instructed to stick close to the town, lest he run into a wild boar in the Bramble Patch or be drawn away by a mischievous sylph. Cirque's few friends tended to be woodland creatures that would wander into the outskirts of the town, or the booth vendors that would show up often to set up market stands of produce or home-knitted goods.
As he matured into his preteen years, Cirque became more bold. Often getting into trouble caused by bodily limitations, his parents finally lost their patience with him and his recklessness. His mother her son to begin taking lessons from E-Sumi-Yan in Gridania in order to become a conjurer. Her theory in this was that, by becoming closer to nature and the elementals, Cirque's health might improve by drawing on that nature power. Reluctantly and often begrudgingly, Cirque began attending lessons at least once a week under E-Sumi-Yan. Surprisingly enough, his progress was swift; magic came quick to him. His health improved dramatically. Fairly soon, the Miqo'te had a strong grasp on his elemental powers and even attuned his abilities further into becoming a white mage.
That was when the Calamity happened. The primal, Bahamut, emerged and began to wreak havoc upon Eorzea. Naturally, a draft was sent out. However, Cirque's own father volunteered. Harmony was heartbroken, and Cirque was outraged. What right did his father have to walk into a death sentence like that? Now a full adult at the ripe age of 21, Cirque tried to stop his father from leaving on that gloomy, rainy day. But his dad wouldn't have it; he couldn't ignore his homeland in its time of need.
Not even a few months later, the notice arrived via carrier Moogle. His father had passed, just another one dead in the horrors of the Calamity. Once again, a new wave of despair washed over his mother; rage boiled within him. The idiot had gotten himself killed. How could he have done something so selfish with a wife and son who depended on him?
Time passed slowly. Each day seemed like a century; each week a lifetime. Finally, when he could stand it no longer, Cirque left. Yep, just up and left. It was selfish, detestable, abhorrent... But he left. He shouldn't have abandoned his mother in her time of need, but he did. He left to see the world, he left to discover his future, he left because he didn't know what else to do; he didn't know what meaning his life even had.
One of the Keeper's stops found him in the desert city of Ul'dah. Having been surviving off of odd jobs and the like, Ul'dah seemed like a promising place to remain for a while. However, at the time, Cirque didn't realize how completely quintessential being there would turn out to be. He became acquainted with an odd group of Lalafells with a knack for a magic of their own... but it was a different kind of magic: black magic.
It turned out that Cirque was about as natural as a natural could get (no nature puns intended). It turns out that having a strong bond with the elements (which could be as destructive as they could be nurturing) worked to his benefit. It wasn't long before the Keeper could add mastery of the dark arts to his skillset. However, hurling a few fireballs here-and-there wasn't the entire extent of his occult practices. No... there was one other thing that the Miqo'te worked on while he spent his time in Ul'dah. He worked on this particular practice alone and in secret: the art of necromancy. And, while it was true that necromancy itself made the elementals uneasy, they still obliged to help... but only if they deemed the necromancy was for the greater good of many and not for selfish reasons.
Cirque had big plans for his newfound powers. As a matter-of-fact, he set off right away to travel back to Bentbranch. There, he intended to do something that no one had ever attempted: bringing a memory back to life. Logically, it all made sense. Cirque would use the Echo to tap into his mother's memories of the day that his father left, and then he would tap into his necromancy. It would be flawless.
Only... it wasn't.
Everything blew up in the mage's face... quite literally. Sensing his own selfish desires, the elementals left him in the middle of the ritual and everything came crashing down. It was a fiasco that nearly killed him. Well, you know what they say: nothing ventured, nothing gained. What he gained in that encounter was the knowledge that that was something he'd never attempt again... at least, not without the proper amount of power.
Once again, Cirque set off to continue on his journeys. He still wanders around to this day, doing odd jobs, often serving as an information broker of sorts, and researching information on the elements and the primals... Anything with power, really... in hopes of discovering something that may just grant him the strength he needs to bring his father back to life.
