Demographical / Physical
Character Name: Devyn Piper
Nicknames, if any: Dev
Race & Subgroup: Midlander Hyur
Gender: Male
Age (or human approximate): 22
Nameday: 6th Sun of the 6th Astral Moon
Height: 5 fulm, 11 ilm
Weight: 168 ponze
Hair: Platinum blonde, short
Eyes: Dark greenish gray
Skin: Pale, and often sunburned
Fashion Style: Devyn normally wears conservative, functional attire, though he's not afraid to go to the beach or other casual places in more casual garb or occasionally try a fancier or louder outfit. He's very picky about his clothing's appearance and has been known to gripe when forced by circumstances or necessity to wear something that isn't up to his usual standards.
Other Appearance Details: Devyn is lean and fit, as much due to his practice as an archer and hunter as to his often distant travels in his work as a healer. His pale skin tends to sunburn easily and he sometimes has a difficult time healing that away. He keeps himself and his clothing very clean.
Psychological / Mental
Morality / Alignment: Chaotic Good, tending more towards good than chaos
Guardian Deity: Nophica, nominally at least
Attitude: Very positive. Usually energetic, often playful, and rarely grumpy. He can, however, be more serious when he feels it suits the situation.
Positive Traits: Devyn is upbeat and friendly, ever-helpful, and fiercely loyal to his friends, often to the point of neglecting his own duties. He can be thoughtful when he believes it's required and has proven to be quite clever at times. Though he might make a show of fear when he's not being serious Devyn is brave, sometimes stupidly so, and is willing to attempt just about anything.
Negative Traits: While friendly, he can be awkward and shy at times, though he's been improving more and more of late. This now-rare instance is usually only evident in social situations when talk becomes more serious. His bravery and loyalty to those he cares about can combine to make him reluctant to involve others in his problems if he believes there’s a danger to them – he’d rather try to handle things on his own and spare them the risk, even when he really should have the help. At the same time he's prone to ignoring obvious risks to himself in pursuit of his goal while acting on his emotions and desire to help others. Despite displaying bouts of cleverness he's not above the occasional absentminded lapse or, at times, completely missing what others would consider obvious.
Quirks: He prefers to keep himself and his clothing clean, and in some cases will go out of his way to do so. He's also easily distracted and can find himself stopping to view the scenery or talking about something completely irrelevant when he should be more focused.
In-Character Job: Freelance healer, most recently working as an independent medic with the Red Wings unit of the Immortal Flames.
Professional Skills: Devyn is a powerful but inexperienced conjurer, capable of competent healing more through force than finesse. He learned stealth years ago on the streets of Ul'dah and subsequent time training as a hunter and tracker in the Black Shroud has only sharpened his skills. Besides stealth, his training as a woodsman has added a passing knowledge of plant and animal life and given him familiarity with both bow and gun. Though sometimes shy in social situations, he is strangely comfortable in a professional leadership role--something he proved as an officer of the now defunct Oathless Free Company.
Amateur Skills / Hobbies: He has some knowledge of tanning, first taught to him when he was a youth in Ul’dah and refreshed by his mentor in Gridania, but has never pursued it beyond learning the basics. One of his duties around the farm near Gridania was cooking, and while he’s far from a master culinarian he’s capable enough and especially enjoys cooking for others. If it can be considered to be a hobby, travel is also on the list. He loves traveling to new places and seeing the amazing sights Eorzea has to offer.
Likes / Wants: Devyn absolutely loves the rain, likely a holdover from his days growing up in Ul'dah. He acquired a taste for Gridanian ale and mead once he moved there, though he's never been fond of wine. Oh, also, scenery. Tall and majestic, wide open, enclosed and mysterious, it doesn't matter. Devyn loves seeing new things.
Dislikes / Avoids: Eft eyes. Don't ask. Really, any eyes that are no longer attached to the original creature. Corruption of any sort, especially among authority. Sunburns. Being dirty/grimy.
Other
Location of Home, if any: Near Gridania
Place of Birth: Near Ul'dah
Orientation: Heterosexual
Favored Traits: Devyn is drawn toward those who share his playful nature as well as those who share his capacity for compassion and care about others. He appreciates people who are clever or intelligent and can keep up with his more ridiculous jokes. Though he might protest (or fight back!), he secretly enjoys being teased so long as he knows it's in fun.
Disfavored Traits: A calloused or snobbish attitude, whether towards people or the world in general. People who complain but dismiss all offered solutions, or people who won't accept help in general, frustrate him.
History
Born to a poor family in Ul’dah, Ashwin Fowler grew up scraping up what he could from a city that had little to no use for him. There was never enough food, clothing, or sometimes even shelter for his parents and their four children. While Kenelm, the eldest of the four Fowler children, took to working at the tannery with their father, Ashwin despised the work and began attempting to provide for his younger siblings another way.
It was years after he began his thieving career that it happened. He still doesn’t know how he was spotted and recognized, or by whom, but he arrived home to the sight of Brass Blade uniforms and the sound of scared wails and angry voices demanding the return of something he knew perfectly well he had taken. There was only one thing he could do when he heard the sing of steel scraping out of a scabbard, and his father’s voice cut off mid-sentence, and a gurgling cry, and the terrified screams of his mother and sister. He ran.
He arrived in Gridania at the age of 14, calling himself Devyn Piper, and found work as a hand on one of the many farms surrounding the great city. There he learned how to work the land to grow crops, and how to take from the bounty the forest provided in the form of plentiful game. It was there he learned to shoot. For two years Devyn worked the fields and hunted the forest. He hated it at first, but knew he couldn’t risk taking up his old trade and bringing notice to himself. Who knew how far the powers of Ul’dah could truly reach? As he became more comfortable with his new life, however, he began to find that he truly loved the Black Shroud.
The world was made anew in the year of his 16th nameday. Dalamud had fallen, and out of its shattered husk came the terrifying birth of a new era. Beneath the more obvious scars, the people of the Shroud saw other, equally dangerous changes. The ixal encroaching on land they had not dared tread in years, promising crops giving surprisingly low yields, and a general shift in the tenor of the forest. Devyn and his mentor, an older hyur woodsman by the name of Emnet, became more involved in keeping the forest safe – taking on bandits, ixal, and other stranger and more dangerous foes.
Four years later, Emnet was killed and Devyn grievously wounded while investigating near the Tam-Tara Deepcroft and, had it not been for the timely intervention of the Twin Adders, Devyn would have perished as well. The Twin Adder conjurer who healed the young man sensed an immense potential for conjury in him and some weeks later managed to convince him to enroll in the Conjurers’ Guild and begin his training in that art.
