History

Biography

Birth and Childhood

Eudalie was born to a tribe of Keepers of the Moon in the Black Shroud. However, the rivalry between the tribe and poachers and rogues alike became more brutal with each passing moon. The babe knew no peace, nor did the huntresses that led the clan. It soon became a matter of nightly and daily patrols, restlessness keeping even the menfolk awake and anxious. Subterfuge and battle often filled the night the Keepers so adored, and in the day when sleep was meant to take them, few roamed the outskirts of their territory, safeguarding the others. After one too many raids that threatened their way of life; men and women slaughtered, children stolen, warriors bested, the clan had no choice but to roam the Shroud in search of safety for what little numbers remained. The adaptation to a nomadic routine was harsh on the caregivers and children more than any. Huntresses and leaders kept the clan moving, but the Keepers needed rest. It was during one such interlude, that they became prey to another ambush. Deep in territory not their own, the tribe fought a downhill battle, and lost more of their kin. Though blood spilled had been little, they wept for the loss of their offspring.

The Keeper clan's children had been spirited away by poachers, eager to make gil. It went unquestioned that there were Keepers who tracked the thieves, though the numbers uncertain. Eudalie was but a bleary eyed toddler at the time, at the age of two and barely walking. She, like many of her stolen peers, went underfed and maltreated. A few moons passed until she was traded, with many others, into slaver's hands. The slave trade led her out of the Black Shroud and into the unforgiving heat of the Thanalan sands. Eudalie's constitution was tested against the elements and shifts, and shuddered in failure. The toddler became ill and weak. Older children in her ranks avoided her, frightened to contract whatever disease she carried, whilst few older slaves had the ability or attention to care for her. One or two slaves acted as nursemaids as best their shackles would allow, though Eudalie remained ever sick. Without proper treatment or care, she was doomed.

Many moons passed, and miraculously, Eudalie survived to see the age of three. She saw many faces come and go throughout the trade, but she was an unwanted commodity as she lay wheezing in her shackles, barely able to keep from coughing, let alone walk or perform chores. It was a bright day in Ul'dah when the slavers brought their product into the city under the guise of tired family, though the effort needed was little. Corruption was nothing new in Ul'dah, and the black market was happy to receive more chattel. Eudalie was most often dragged at the feet of other slaves, lest another prisoner was willing to carry her, until the cold-hearted merchants found a place to set up shop. Eudalie's condition had worsened, and her fate was grim. She did not retain much at her age, lost to the struggle of breathing. Her childhood had not bared many achievements, and her sickness left her bereft of the ability to walk, and her knowledge of speech was fragmented. Most buyers cringed at the thought of buying a diseased slave, and she was left to herself. When the slavers saw that she would be of no profit, her food lessened, and her health took a darker plunge. It was a windy afternoon in Ul'dah, when a small band of Brass Blades waded into the black market, weeding through the merchants for legitimacy and illegal conduct.

One officer discovered the slave traders, and the ill Eudalie. There was an argument, a commotion, and finally, the Brass Blade, who was rash and righteous, handed over gil for Eudalie. The shackles she wore were undone, though her left wrist was marked with circular scars as a grim reminder, and she was cradled away. Thus began her life with a young Hyur couple, and she was given her name. Eudalie spent moons still suffering from illness, her constitution and strength devastated through her upbringing thus far. Her new mother dedicated bells at her bedside, trying to soothe the turmoil through lullaby and story. Medicine and food became more regular for Eudalie, and she began to learn speech at the age of four. While Eudalie was nursed back to health, her father, the Brass Blade who took her in, faced new dilemmas. Despite his intentions, he'd committed a crime in buying a slave. Rumors swept up in distaste, and soon his peers looked at him with shame. By the time Eudalie was learning to walk again, he was discharged from the Blades.

Childhood and Adolescence

From then on, the relatively smooth lifestyle the family had began to wither. Eudalie's father took odd jobs, attributing to different hard labors throughout the city, while her mother worked as a weaver out of their home. Eudalie was a quiet and frail moppet at the time, still coming back into her health. She spent most of her time clinging to her mother's skirts and sucking her thumb, occasionally looking over books in an attempt to read. Her parents were eager to teach her how to read and write, and often encouraged her with many a book. Her mother would have Eudalie read books aloud to her while she wove, correcting her speech or telling her to reread. The Miqo'te child enjoyed these days, and became eager to read more stories. Each day proved well, though she saw faces come in and out of their home, strictly on business. She learned her manners for others through example; her mother often bowed and addressed others with the highest level of respect while she worked, and soon Eudalie was mimicking her. Respect and obedience came naturally, perhaps through result of her polite manner of speaking.

The diverse meals they once enjoyed weaned to a staple of roasted nopales and mustard eggs, with the occasional treat of chicken and mushrooms. Eudalie came to enjoy their special meal of bouillabaisse, reserved for special occasions. It was humble living earned through hard work, but the small family got by. When Eudalie was eight, she took an interest in cooking. Her skills were limited, but she watched her mother prepare many meals, and began by readying things such as boiled eggs. Before long, Eudalie was doing her share of chores around the house. She cooked and greeted customers with her mother; she made an effort to clean as well, but due to her small stature and enfeebled physical prowess, she couldn't perform certain chores. However, she always made an effort to do laundry and linens, and dusted. Her cooking improved. The roasted nopales she prepared were no longer burnt and the sauce no longer watery, just as she learned to properly scramble eggs and even devil them. There was a tiredness in Eudalie that she tried to overcome most days, a fatigue that her Hyur parents assumed came from her early years. However, she became more lively as the sun went down, and did better to efficiently complete her chores with the moon risen. It was a strange schedule that she kept, a lifestyle of more naps than steady hours of sleep as she struggled to rise with the sun as her parents did, despite her instinct to rise with the moon.

Eventually, she tamed her fatigue to a manageable point. Eudalie spent most of her days sheltered, inside with her mother, working and finishing chores. She attempted to weave, though she couldn't catch on quickly enough to be of help with her mother's work. Her attempts were abandoned in lieu of cooking and, when she was ten, running errands to the market. She was often sent to see her father, for a checkpoint and to drop off his lunch, and did her grocery shopping in the streets of Thal. Some afternoons she sat with him for a spell and listened to his stories, or he'd give her a bit of gil to get a treat. At first, she spent her meager allowance on things such as cookies and cheap toys. Then she learned she could save her gil to buy books. She enjoyed faerie tales and folklore, and even bought books of sketches. She saw many things in the drawings, such as Gridania and the ocean, even dragons. She bought cookbooks eventually and hoped to save gil for the ingredients. Some books on magic found its way to the stall she frequented, and Eudalie read about conjury. This fascinated her. Her father told her tales of thaumaturges and once brought her to the guild to witness a bit, but she'd never heard of magic that could heal. She continued reading, enthralled.

Her parents taught her many different things. Her father spoke to her about the world outside of Ul'dah, he told tales of his journeys on a Limsan ship, and his heroic deeds as an adventurer. He taught her of ethics and conduct, that one must always follow the law, for it's meant to protect everyone. He knew that better now. In his spare time, he brought her just outside the gates of Ul'dah into Thanalan and taught her bits and pieces about plantlife. He showed her which things could be taken and eaten, and showed her where pink saffron flowers grew. He gave some to her mother whenever they returned. Her mother taught her manners and how to behave properly, and encouraged her reading. Eudalie often watched her mother weave, and helped sew close tiny holes when there was time to spare. Her parents were strict and barely let her from their sight, but were generous people.

That was why, when the Calamity struck and passed, Eudalie was so surprised over her scolding. Many refugees flooded into Ul'dah, and Eudalie, barely fifteen, sought to help those she came across. Her time outside of the home fluctuated. She was older now, and weaving work became more scarce, but with the rise in people and crime, her family was less willing to let her go out alone. Eudalie began giving her allowance away to beggars, then began stowing away portions of her meals as she watched people struggle on the streets. She'd give away some of her food, hoping to help. A few moons later, her mother got work in the weaver's guild, and Eudalie was left to her own devices in an empty home. She kept to herself and read more on conjury, and practiced in her room. Without training and her knowledge limited, her methods took from her own health. Regardless, she tried to heal minor things for strangers who wailed in pain or sickness, and shared portions of her meals with the very same. Soon, Eudalie was becoming visibly ill, and her parents demanded answers. Her books on conjury were taken away and forbidden to her, and her meals were now watched. Eudalie obliged to her parents' demands, though it was with reluctance.

Moons passed and her health returned yet again, though Eudalie began cooking more throughout the day. She often wandered through Ul'dah when she could, or stepped out of the gates in hopes to gather spices like her father taught her. With more free time on her hands and her books limited, she spent time people watching and observing the world around her. It wasn't before long that she put together the idea to feed refugees again. This time, however, she would not spend her own food, but prepare meals just for them. Eudalie invited refugees, strangers, into her family's home and prepared meals of scrambled eggs and chicken stock for them. She made do with whatever ingredients she had, and there were times when she could only offer nopales to them, cooked and readied cactus leaves. She offered to wash their clothes as well, her spirits lifted whenever a smile was granted in reward for her efforts. It was a ramshackle soup kitchen she'd begun, but it lasted only two moons, before her mother found out. Again, she was scolded.

So Eudalie began to cook and ready meals to take out to those she could. Her family wasn't wealthy, and they struggled with the influx of refugees now demanding jobs, but her mother had steady work as a weaver, and her father often found jobs. They'd developed a comfortable lifestyle again, and soon Eudalie's father was able to retire as she approached eighteen. She asked, one morning, of where she'd come from. Her father did not know, but divulged to her he'd found her as a child, sick and injured in Pearl Lane. He said nothing of slavers, nor of the scar on her wrist, but apologized for not knowing her real family. Eudalie laughed, surprising even him, when she said this was her real family. Her relationship with her parents became slightly more comfortable from then on, though her father was intent to keep her sheltered from the unruly hands of Ul'dah. Eudalie overheard a discussion one night, on the topic of courting, between her parents. Her mother was uncertain, and her father firm, until they spoke to her of it. Not so much was revealed, rather than, when two people fall in love, they begin to court. Eudalie was left to put the rest together on her own, assuming as much that her parents had courted before getting married, and that was how couples worked.

Present

Nearing twenty years in age, and her family secure, Eudalie set out to learn more of conjury so that she may help people more actively. With a handmade robe from her mother, she boarded a caravan with a bit of gil in her pocket, and made for Gridania.
