History

The Beginning

Gaivo'to was born the second son of his family. Although he was born second he is the only son of his family as far as he knows, as his older brother passed away from illness. He was always a somewhat sickly child and as a result his parents coddled him out of fear he would suffer the same fate as his brother. Due to his weaknesses he was never very good at physical activities and instead spent his time learning and reading. He lived with his family for eight years stuffing his head full of knowledge. He excelled at mathematics and medicine. He primarily thought himself his math skills and he learned medicine from talking to various healers of the sick and learning from them. He hoped to one day be able to help people, to hopefully save some sick child so they didn't have a brother who would grow up alone. However one day of his eighth year something happened that changed everything.

The Discovery

Gai had taken his books and papers out to the forest to study amongst nature one day. He was excited as he had recently purchased a new book from a wandering merchant. The book itself was very old and he could hardly wait to see what wonders it contained. When he opened it though he didn't find quite what he expected. The pages of words were missing, instead shapes and figures covered pages, there were words scattered here and there but most of the book was nothing more than lines and circles to him. While disappointed at first his curiosity drove him to figure out the books secrets. It was while he was working through the book that something incredible happened. As he was focusing on the book a bright light began to shine appearing to come from the book and a moment later a ball of light appeared from thin air. The orb floated around him pulsing weakly as if it were about to fade. Despite knowing nothing Gai felt as though the orb was not dangerous at all. He reached out to touch it and it felt slightly warm to his finger. He shoved his book in his bag and cupped the orb in his hands and ran home, making sure to take care of the strange thing.

The Escape

Upon returning home Gai did what any eight year old would do, he showed the glowing ball of light to his parents asking them if the knew what it was. His parents knew nothing and instantly demanded he get rid of it. He argued that it wasn't dangerous and that he wanted to keep it. His mother attempted to take the orb from him but he withdrew and thought only of protecting it, in that moment the orb's light grew brighter and it raised itself from his hands and began to float around the room freely before floating out the window. His parents sent him to his room for his disobedience which he did willingly, planning on studying the book further. As he sat on his bed reading, trying to repeat the earlier event the orb suddenly came floating in through his bedroom window. It began to float and dance around his head. Gai wondered aloud what the object could be and seemingly from within his head he heard the word "friend." Gai was reasonably surprised by this and began to try and speak to the object. He didn't get answers to everything but he could feel words and emotions forming inside of him as he asked questions. Gai resolved to figure out what the truth behind this orb was and so he gathered some supplies and with his new friend following him he fled from his home to find someone who could teach him what he found.

The Teacher

Gai fled his home and found himself at a harbor. He had no idea where he was but he needed to get as far away from his parents as he could. Using the cover of night and a hefty amount of luck he managed to sneak onto a ship, with no idea where the ship was headed he stowed away and left his homeland. After days at sea and his strength waning from lack of food the ship finally docked. Sneaking around as the cargo was unloaded he managed to escape the ship undetected and he found himself in an unfamiliar city. He wandered the streets not really knowing where to go, wandering down an alley trying to avoid attention for the moment his vision suddenly blurred and he collapsed to the ground. Believing that he was going to die in the alley his consciousness slipped away as unknown to him the ball of light took off flying away. When Gai next opened his eyes he found himself in a bed. At first he thought it had all been a dream but he quickly realized the room was unfamiliar to him. Various scents drifted through the room and tables and desks were covered in different instruments. Gai sat up in the bed and noticed an elderly man sat at a desk across the room. He learned from the man that the orb had gone to find help and the old man explained to him that the ball was a form of an egi. Gai had accidentally preformed Arcanima while studying a grimoire. The man offered to train him in the art if he would work as his assistant and Gai took the offer instantly. At eight years old Gai had become apprentice to an arcanist and at that moment his life was changed forever.

The Future

It was a day of mourning for Gai, in his eighteenth year his master and surrogate father passed due to complications of his age. Gai was left with all of his master's possessions which amounted to a lot of books and scientific instruments which Gai had little need of. He had studied and learned the arts of Arcanima and Alchemy, while also gaining a slight understanding of Conjury and Thaumaturgy. He had grown well, the sickness of his youth having abandoned him leaving him healthy for the most part, he was still physically weak but he no longer had to worry about his health. His egi now named Poco had changed from a ball of light to a shimmering carbuncle due to Gai's advancements. Packing his bag and locking his home he set off towards the docks, seeking a boat to send him off the the Jewel of the Desert, Ul'dah. He sought the city as a means to acquire funds for further research, as the boat left the dock he looked upon Limsa and idly thought how this was the second time he had left his home. A single tear falling down this face as he remembered his parents he quickly wiped it from his face and hid shook his head ridding himself of such thoughts. He was beginning a new journey there was no time to cry about what he was leaving behind.

Personality

Gaivo'to generally keeps to himself. Busying himself with work he will only interact with others if his work requires it. The exception is his egi Poco who Gai will spend hours talking and playing with. When he does have to interact with other he keeps the meetings brief yet polite, he knows how people perceive him and he has on occasion used his youthful looks to his advantage.
