To say that this character is a "work in progress" would be a massive understatement. I've yet to really be able to fully develop Garret as a character as of yet but fully intend on doing so in the immediate future. What you see on this page will be altered or scrapped entirely as I get more into the character.

WARNING: Some content on this page will be mature, but this will be kept to a minimum.

Garret Brennar was a member of the Gladiators' Guild during the first year of the Seventh Umbral Era, who was eventually trained as a Paladin by the Sultansworn during their time of need -- one of many to have joined the ranks of Free Paladins during the time.

After barely coming of-age Garret bore witness to the events of the Calamity before being buried in a system of caverns near the city of Ul'dah, where he remained for days before being found by Brass Blades searching for survivors in the territories surrounding the city. From then he lived off of the streets of the Sultanate, making ends meat by taking on trivial chores and jobs that paid enough for him to be able to feed himself. When he found himself wanting a better opportunity, he went to the Gladiators' Guild and pleaded for a chance to prove his worth. His first task was merely to hunt monsters outside of the city walls -- having never handled a sword, before, suffice it to say he failed in this most basic task. When the Guild wrote him off as another fool willing to needlessly throw his life away, one of their senior members saw potential and decided to take Garret in to train him in the use of swords.

Garret quickly learned how to fight and defend himself and was given another chance to prove himself to the Guild -- the "entrance exam" having consisted of standing off against two other senior members and last as long as possible before blood was drawn. The amount of which he had learned in the months since his previous failure had impressed the guild leadership enough that, even though his opponents had made their mark, he was unequivocally accepted into the guild.

His short time in the Gladiators' Guild was punctuated with several events, mostly relief work for refugees and working crews around the city. He and a small party of fellow shield brothers came across several encounters of cutthroats attempting to indulge in the sufferings of the people, driving them away. The aid to the Immortal Flames and the Brass Blades had given him recognition and a bit of a reputation for being a philanthropic individual.

After a year with the guild, the call for a higher purpose became sweet music to Garret's ears as he had heard tell of the Sultansworn opening its doors to anyone with the conviction and dedication to train in their arts -- the ways of the Paladin. Leaving his comrades in the Gladiators' Guild, he undertook the trials of the Sultansworn and passed through with stunning ease. From there, he remained a squire to one of the Sultansworn's veteran members for the better part of four years. In the year 1577 (Year 5 of the Seventh Umbral Era) he had completed his trials and was bestown the gifts and status of a Free Paladin.

Early Life

Garret was born on the 25th Sun of the 2nd Umbral Moon in the year 1553 during the Sixth Astral Era, and was the third-born -- the second and last son -- of a family of six. His mother, Alfswyrd, was a "retired" adventurer and his father, Derian, urged by their mother to support the family, left to take up the life and was often gone for months at a time. Garret had an older brother, Uldrich, an older sister named Lufe, and a younger sister named Ceolwyn. Their family resided near the seas in La Noscea, being a relatively stable home despite their father not being around as often. During this time, Garret was often put to work on the nearby farmlands alongside his older brother, their sisters finding labor in-town with the craftsmen.

In his younger teens, it was discovered that despite his father was largely considered an upstanding individual, he became involved with very unsavory groups. Unexpectedly, a band of marauders and raiders came upon their homestead. Garret managed to escape, barely, and had never seen his family again. Investigators who were involved in the follow-up determined that there were no survivors, despite there being no visible remains or bodies.

Homeless and without care, Garret left for Ul'dah.

♦ Behaviour

Friendly, casual, and outgoing. Garret often gave others the impression of his reliance on formality and a stoic attitude, but in reality he was an open and easy-going character, eager to engage others in hearty conversation of various subjects. He was honor-bound as a Paladin to protect those who were unable to protect themselves, but no code of honor would prevent him from indulging in his favorite vices -- alcohol and the feeling of a warm woman wrapped around his manhood being two of them. Indeed, Garret was an adventurer through and through, acting more as a brash and reckless mercenary than a noble and honorable Paladin. Despite all, he was trusted greatly by his companions and allies, reliable almost to a fault.

He spoke with a light accent to his voice, though his speech was flowing and often upbeat. His tone was usually informal, but he was known for having combined both formality and informality in a single interaction, if such a thing were even possible. Many who engaged with him in conversation had noted that he would often ramble on about nonsensical or irrelevant things when certain trigger words were ever mentioned around him, only if he were directly involved with said conversation(s).

Combat

Garret wields his favored broadsword while assuming his standard combat position.

His Style

Garret trained in the marriage between the sword and shield, having adapted himself to become a firmly rooted frontline fighter when in combat, begging the attention of his adversaries and keeping his parties protected as well as was possible. Despite his favor towards this particular combative mindset, Garret was fairly nimble and quick on his feet, using his impressive reflexes to his advantage.

His Gear

Garret wore the armor of the Sultansworn most often long after he was inducted into the order of Free Paladins, and it was frequently seen worn and battered. He kept it as cleanly polished as possible during whatever downtime he would find. When not adorned in the Sultansworn armor, he would wear simple clothing -- mostly hued soot black, a common pattern in his color palette -- with armored jackboots to at least provide some protection (After all, continued use of his armor would oftentimes be uncomfortable). When traveling, he wore a turban fitted with a metal visor; he would never wear this in the cities or among company, however.

As a Paladin he would wield a sword and shield. His shield was a unique make; it was a slightly larger buckler with two slots one could sheath a sword each -- both of these swords would be simple, and of varying lengths, used only in times of emergency for when his primary weapon of choice was either out of reach or completely indisposed. His most-used sword was a similarly unique make, constructed of tempered and refined cobalt in separated parts. These parts, in turn, were able to shift in and out of position. When his sword was sheathed -- or, when it was not "activated" -- it would take the form of a "prong" of sorts with a space in between the two blade pieces. This could be used defensively to grapple his adversaries' weapons out of their hands with a simple twist and tug, though it was not often a preferred use of it as this considerably whittled away at the sword's durability. When in full combat, the pieces could shift together, extending at the head to form a more typical broadsword blade.

Despite its obvious parallels to Garlean machinery, the sword was fully crafted in Eorzea by an experienced crafter of whom remained anonymous.

Discovering the Unsung Heroes of Vylbrand Academy

During the latter days of his training with the Sultansworn, Garret happened upon an escalating scene in Ul'dah late one evening and became involved in its progression when he had decided to step in to attempt to, at the very least, break up the fight. When the belligerents took it elsehwere, Garret followed after a small party of concerned individuals just so that he could provide some form of assistance. When finally they came upon the scene in Western Thanalan, he and two others set upon both parties in an attempt to conduct a citizens' arrest. Shortly after, a larger group arrived to collect one of the involved individuals and bring peace to the whole situation. Garret later learned that this group hailed from Vylbrand Academy, of Limsa Lominsa, and the next day sought out the group himself -- interested in learning more about them. He found entrance into the organization almost immediately, and learned of the Academy's workings and institutions.

The day after, in the evening, he sat in the foyer of the Academy's main hall, surrounded by the Academy's pupils and instructors as they made jolly conversation. The impromptu proceedings were halted when a relatively young woman came to the door of the Academy and offered to sell a host of treats to them. Though they were tantalizing, Garret avoided eating for no particular reason. Eventually, he started to see it was a good decision -- those who ingested the cookies were stricken by some kind of curse, in which their minds were devolved into young children, and they suffered hallucinations as the night progressed. Above the Academy, a Garlean airship moved into position and the Academy was set upon by its air-dropped legion. Garret followed those who were of sane mind into the secret underground basement of the Academy, confusion overcoming him as everything happened so fast. They all escaped to an airship docked inside of a secret cavern just off of the island, pursued by the Garleans and their agents. It took effort for the ship to get airborne, but when it did they were once again set upon by one of the larger airships. Garret, having no other choice but to help, immediately manned one of the cannons in an effort to drive off one of the pursuing airships. Grappling hooks pinned the ship and allowed Garlean soldiers to board. In direct combat, Garret and others from the Academy fended off a host of legionaries as they boarded the airship.

When, at last, they had a moment to breathe their ship landed on a secluded island far off of the coast of La Noscea where they could rest and recuperate. With this, he took the opportunity to learn more about what, exactly, he was getting himself into. He learned that Vylbrand Academy was some sort of a "front" for a secret project called the Unsung Heroes, wherein adventurers and heroes alike came together to tackle the world's problems as a group. After learning this, he found himself involved in something much larger than he had anticipated -- but offered his assistance wherever he was needed.

♦ Miscellaneous

Hooks

This character is generally easy to walk up to and RP with. Reactions will differ depending on the situation, but guaranteed RP will be had when socially confronted.

-- Everything is ordered based on the ease of interaction. For example, anything closer to the top of the list is easier to RP with.
-- This section is also written in present-tense.

Sultansworn

Garret is easily recognizable as a Sultansworn as he is more than often adorned in his armor.
Potential RP Involvement:
-- Even though he is given very little restriction as a free Paladin, Garret can be seen "patrolling" Ul'dah very frequently.
-- Other Sultansworn may approach him at any given time for interaction.

Gladiatorial Reputation

Although he scarcely took part in the combat ring of the arena, Garret had garnered quite a reputation prior to joining the Sultansworn.
Potential RP Involvement:
-- Folks familiar with the rumors surrounding him may be able to recognize him easily. (Rumors will be added in eventually down below)

Philanthropic

Garret used his meager wealth during the latter months of his time with the Gladiators to donate to the poor and the city's refugees.
Potential RP Involvement:
-- Those he had donated to (as he had often done so directly) would be able to recognize him.
-- Conversely, he had likely made enemies amongst the monetarists of Ul'dah.
-- As a Free Paladin, he offers protection and aid to the refugees.

Vengeful

Although tempered and cooled years after the deaths of his family, Garret is driven to mete out justice to those who were responsible for their murders.
Potential RP Involvements: Conflict-focused
-- Said bandits may still very well be active in the La Noscea area or have become sellswords in the years since his family was murdered.
-- His father, Derian Brennar, might still very well be alive. (Possibly under a different name...) Garret would have questions for him if he were to ever find the truth.
