Gaston
~ "I've looked at the world for quite a few years now and I've found that if I don't laugh, I'll probably end up crying." ~

S U M M A R Y

Hailing from the now frozen land of Coerthas and the Holy See of Ishgard, Gaston was a Temple Knight who always did what he thought was right now matter what. This of course led to his eventual exile from Ishgard five years ago, leaving behind everything and everyone he knew for the sake of saving a family from certain death at the hands of an Inquisitor. Now on the run from the Church in Ishgard and believed to be dead by his family Gaston makes a living as best as he can. For a time he made do by working with the family that he had rescued so they could all start a new life, yet the death of Siohoix left him in a pit of grief. Unable to bear the loss of someone close to him he threw himself on to the Bloodsands for a year in a thinly concealed attempt to get himself killed. Yet when he finally woke from that grief he was disgusted by what he had been doing and left the sands behind him. Since then he's been taking on odd jobs at the Adventurer's Guild in all Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa Lominsa. He spent most of the time in La Noscea due to also taking an apprenticeship in smithing. Three years of living like that passed before he finally took on with a free company and has most recently applied and joined the ranks of the Pathfinders.

H I S T O R Y

Gaston was born at Falcon's Nest in the Western Coerthas Highlands on the 4th Sun of the 5th Astral Moon in the year 1548 of the Sixth Astral Era. While his parents weren't rich they weren't exactly all that hard off either giving him a rather stable and warm childhood to grow up through. His father, Delmont, was a Knight for a noble family and was stationed in Falcon's Nest until he retired while his mother, Blanche, was a weaver and earned most of the families income with her arts. Not having much skill with weaving himself his father ended up teaching Gaston how to fight from a young age, and the young boy proved to be a quick study. He was always eager to learn things that would allow him to stand up for others, setting his beliefs of right and wrong at a very early point in his life. He is the eldest of the three Legrand children, his younger brother is three years young than he is and almost his complete opposite. Being weaker physically than Gaston he ended up developing a jealousy for his older twin, even though Gaston always stood up for him. His sister on the other hand is ten years younger and is someone he has always been extremely protective of. Overall with his siblings he couldn't have asked for a better childhood. During this time he helped around the house by handling meals, and spent most of his day training with his father or playing with his siblings until they started to help his mother with her work.

At the age of eighteen Gaston said goodbye to his family and left Falcon's Nest for Ishgard itself, with a recommendation from his father to the Captain of a noble's household guard. This was only a stepping stone to him though as his eyes were set on joining the ranks of the Temple Knights. Ishgard itself though was a challenge for him since he never really had to deal with nobles that often out in his hamlet home. The division of nobles and commoners really through him off and he developed a dislike for the nose in the air way many of the nobility carried themselves. For two years he distinguished himself as a household knight until he passed the trials to enter the Temple Knights. It was during this time that Gaston's dislike for nobility deepened even more as the one in charge of his training was rather harsh to those of commoner stock, but he pushed through that until he made it into the regular ranks of the Knights. Life couldn't get better for him in his mind after this after he met a elezen women named Aviene who was the daughter of a mason, and someone he got along with easily. This eventually lead to where his life would become almost turned upside down.

At one time Gaston and Aviene were out together they were caught by someone Aviene had not anticipated. The woman was actually the daughter of a noble and was out mingling with those from the Foundation as a way to get back at her controlling father. Whether or not her feelings for Gaston were ever actually true when their relationship was discovered it was quickly ended and her father used his connections to have Gaston reassigned outside of Ishgard. By this time he had been in the Temple Knights for four years and had earned a reputation for being dependable and so he was assigned to a detail to protect and Inquisitor making his rounds in the Central Coerthas Highlands. His time with the inquisitor was not easy at all as it made him question many things he believed. The man he was supposed to protect wasn't interested in finding heretics mingled in the innocent, just with finding heretics. This caused him to execute many who were actually innocent with little to no evidence. Each time this happened Gaston grew more troubled until there came a time where the man wanted an entire family pushed off of Witchdrop, to include their four and eleven year old daughters. Unable to stand by any longer Gaston slew the unsuspecting Inquisitor and the rest of his guards to protect the family and do what he believed was right.

Now a fugitive from his home Gaston led the family, before anyone knew what happened, out of Coerthas and to Gridania. Once in hiding him and the father of the family began to take on mercenary jobs. Siohoix and him became quick friends during this time and looked after each other to make sure they were always able to make it back. This made his passing especially hard on Gaston, who witnessed it as Siohoix gave his life to ensure his family's savior would live on. Unable to handle the grief Gaston left the family in Gridania and left for Thanalan, still with the promise to help them make ends meet. This lead to an eleven moon period where Gaston fought on the Bloodsands in Ul'dah and sent portions of his winnings back to the family in Gridania. While it helped provide a way for those who believed in him to survive it was also an attempt to get himself killed. He went at these fights without any will to live and complete reckless abandon, even going so far as to drink beyond excess during his time off the sands to try and give his opponents even more of an upper hand. It wasn't until someone he began to trust turned against him that he was woken from this harmful behavior and finally realized he needed to move on. Unable to face Hisonne and Rosette, the two children who now relied on his income to survive, and unable to stay in Ul'dah after coming to his senses he moved onto Limsa looking for work. The next three years he spent in the port city taking on odd jobs, and even picked up working at the forges as a hobby.

He remained doing that until he was eventually recruited by the Pathfinders Society based in the Mists as a fighter and a smith. During his time there he has seen more than his fair share of combat, but many good times as well. The most noticeable even that happened during his time was those back in Ishgard finding out that he was in fact still alive. This lead him to be the target of the inquisitors family who wanted him back in Ishgard to answer for his crimes, yet with the recent changes in the city state it came to light that the inquisitors weren't all they were made out to be and thus his actions were more favorable looked upon. Unable to get official backing for their vengeance the family hired mercenaries to attack him and those around him until Madison disguised him and made a trip to Ishgard to put an end to it. His family was also dragged into the mess and held captive by the family with the help of his brother Soren who believed Gaston should pay to save the standing of their family. Madison was successful though in resolving the situation without further fighting and it led to the arrest of the noble and the freedom of Gaston's family. Thus Gaston has been able to rest easy once again and the two that relied on him were able to return to Ishgard and the remaining family they had there. As for his relationship with his brother it remains rocky at best as Soren hates Gaston for ruining everything he had planned.

PERSONALITY

APPEARANCE

As with most people there are two different sides to Gaston depending on how well those interacting with him actually know him. For the most part Gaston is very outgoing and jovial by nature, preferring to laugh and enjoy life as much as he can. This is shown in the fact that he is often seen smiling and laughing over something, and tends to tease people he knows a lot. It is never mean spirited though and he always means well, enjoying the fact that he can make others laugh and smile as well. This of course leads into the fact that he enjoys pranks quite a bit, but only does so against friends who know the intentions behind them or those who have earned his ire. This helps give him a rather approachable demeanor as with that he tends to be extremely caring for those around him, trying to help them out of something is wrong. Yet part of this is a cover to hide what is truly going on in his mind.

For the most part there are many times where it is true that the more Gaston smiles and laughs the more he is actually hurting inside. Because he believes that others should always come before him he tends to hide his own true feelings behind jokes and shenanigans. Deep down he is actually a bit more troubled than he ever lets on and is consistently filled with self doubt despite some of the bravado he may spout. Any one he trusts though is quick to find out though that he doesn't hide these things due to a lack of faith in his fellow man but more to the fact that he doesn't want to burden them. To him the ultimate priority is always that, helping others and making them feel better.

When it comes time to enter the battlefield most of the joking and fun having fades into a calm and perceptive mannerism. He always takes stock of the situation before acting and avoids reckless moves at all costs unless it is the only way to get things done. In the end if he can avoid a fight he will, and will almost never go for the kill unless he believes with all his heart that there is no other way to bring things to an end. This contrasts him a lot from others who prefer to fight on the front lines that many assume just want to fight as much as they can despite there being a diplomatic way out of it.

Voice claim: Sean Bean

Gaston is on the taller side for midlander hyurs and stands around five fulms and eleven ilms with an extremely muscular build. This gives him an almost intimidating pose to most except for the fact that you can normally find him with a huge grin on his face, which makes him seem almost harmless. His most distinguishing feature though is actually his hair which is quite red and easily causes him to stand out in a crowd. It is normally kept rather messy and on the shaggy side of things as he doesn't really see the need to take care of it very often. In fact the times that it is clean cut are very far and few between to the point that it is almost unnatural to see him with it like such. Another facet of his appearance that helps ease his intimidating stature along with his smile is his blue eyes which normally appear soft and warm to most people who meet him. In a way though his eyes are a way that he shows his real emotions and are easily read through them. To complete the picture his skin is fair colored and oddly enough unmarked aside from two scars which he keeps hidden. One on his back from his left hip to his right shoulder which is large and jagged from a blade, and one on his left leg from knee to hip.

When it comes to how he normally dresses he can usually be found in light casual clothing, preferring it in warmer climates such as in La Noscea and Thanalan. These vary from a simple shirt to an open jacket that he likes to wear a lot, and almost always in varying colors of red. If there is a need to be in armor he does tend to prefer the lighter types such as chain mail and scale mail over heavier plate to give him a bit more mobility, but he does keep a set of full plate if the situation calls for it. All of these items are always seen as having been well cared for and any damage is almost immediately repaired.
Aspects That Stand Out:
Callused Hands.
Red Hair.
Large scar across his back.

RELATIONS (PC)

Delmont Legrand , Father. () - Faithful Knight.
Character's Thoughts: "If I could even be half the man he is than I will be content with my life."
Gaston's father was always a source of strength for him as well as a role model. He envied his father's strength and courage while still be able to enjoy life no matter the things he saw. He enjoyed the time spent with his father as a child and would always pester him to take to the practice field to teach him more swordsmanship. The man was always proud of Gaston's desire to protect his home and those that lived there. He still lives today in Ishgard, though he has no idea whether or not Gaston lives. He was devastated when he learned that his son might have died in the events that led to the Inquisitor's death, but he never once entertained the thought of him doing anything wrong. He knew even if he lived that he chose to do what he thought was right and that is why he has remained missing.
Blanche Legrand, Mother. () - Practiced Weaver.
Character's Thoughts: "She always smiled, even when we were in trouble. In fact we prefered for her to yell at us as that smile could be quite terrifying at times."
Gaston's mother was an accomplished weaver and handled many things for the hamlet when it came to mending clothes and the like. She was a bit dissapointed when Gaston had absolutely no talent at all for it, but she never once criticized her son. In her eyes it was balanced out by his ability to help around the house and care for his younger siblings. They often drove her crazy though with the antics they would all get into but at the same time she always expected it from them. In her minds it was a a kids will be kids sort of situation. Today she is the family's main source of income though Gaston's brother Soren has been taking on more and more of the work and is taking over the business for her. She still wonders what became of Gaston and just wants closure in her life, and though she would accept the proof of his death she cannot deny she would prefer to have her son come home.
Soren Legrand, Brother. ( ) - Cry Baby
Character's Thoughts: "Twelve I do love my brother but the fits he throws when things don't go his way always get on my last nerve."
Soren is almost an opposite image of Gaston. Unlike Gaston he is slim and unathletic, having no skills with any weapons at all. He was the one to inherit their mother's skill at the loom and easily took to learning weaving. Still the two did often run off and play alot, and any time Gaston convinced him to spar with him it always ended up with Soren going home in tears as well as a rather impressive bruise. He now helps his mother run the family weaving business in Ishgard and has slowly begun to take it over for her so she can rest more. He views his brother's disappearance as selfish and unexcusable. In many ways he hopes his brother died a proper death rather than run off in a selfish way.
Amarante Legrand, Sister. ( ) - Little Flower
Character's Thoughts: "There is nothing I want more for her in this world than for her to smile and be happy."
Gaston has always doted on his younger sister and she always enjoyed the attention he gave her. He took his duties as an older brother rather serious with her especially as she got older. Like their mother Amarante was radiant and drew attention of all those around her as she laughed at Gaston's constant jokes. So it was that Gaston ended up having to rearrange a few faces of those seeking her out that didn't seem to understand the phrase 'not interested.' As of today she is currently married and has gave birth to a neice that Gaston has never met nor does he know of. She greatly wishes for her brother to return or at least let them all know that he is alive. Like their father she knows where ever he is off to he is doing what his heart tells him to.
Kiri Rokuyari. ( ) - The Soft Spoken
Character's Thoughts: "She intrigues me greatly. Every time I run into her she never fails to amaze me with the things she is capable of. If I didn't know better there would be times I wouldn't be sure she is blind."
Gaston has recently gotten to know Kiri quite well since their first encounter at a bar in the Lavender Beds. Since that first meeting and their eventual joining of the Pathfinders Free Company he has grown to consider the woman a friend. It had been awhile since he found someone who could consider as such given his constant moving around over the last five years. Still the way she talks and acts intrigues him and he has gotten to understand her odd speech pattern quite well, now even to the point that he actually knows when she is intentionally saying something in sheer amusement. He is also forced to admit that he actually finds her rather attractive with her almost ethereal features, though he has been finding ways at times to avoid acknowledging this. Even after their rather brief coupling and agreement to pull apart as things were clearly just too rushed Kiri has remained one of his closest friends and someone he counts on. He often finds himself talking things over with her when he is at a loss as to what to do.
Isone Flaval. () - Mistress of Liquor
Character's Thoughts: "I refuse to believe that her tolerance for liquor is completely natural, though she is amusing to be around."
Gaston's first and only meeting so far with Isone was more than enough to etch itself forever in his mind. As one who has always been confident and proud at his ability to hold his drink he was taken by surprise when the woman easily out drank everyone there. Her rather smug attitude at being able to do so amused him and upon hearing more about the woman he figures she is trouble, but so long as she is causing it for others he will just enjoy himself by watching the entertainment at the sidelines.
Jin Karasu. ($) - The Driven Mage-Hunter
Character's Thoughts: "There is much I don't know about him, but he seems happy with Hime and I hope the two of them can find some peace."
While Jin was the co-leader of the Pathfinders along with Madison when he joined the company his interactions with Jin weren't all that common until recently. The man seemed level headed enough to trust leading him into battle, and at the estate he was someone that was easy to relate to. This doesn't even count the challenge Jin has presented Gaston as a smith with the task of forging a weapon the likes of which Gaston has never even read about. The endless research and work that has gone into such a piece of work has Gaston approving of the way Jin thinks, going outside the conventional ways of thinking to get things done. Now that he is no longer Gaston's superior he looks at the man more of a possible friend as they transition into a new free company.
Madison Brookstone. () - The Gentle Leader
Character's Thoughts: "She seems awfully level headed for a leader of mercenaries, I get the feeling though it kind of keeps her set apart from the others though."
Gaston's first introduction to Madison involved the woman instigating a drinking competition between him and a highlander of her company. Needless to say the man was thoroughly amused by that and held a good opinion of her from the start. Since then he has run into her two more times, once during his interview which she did and the second while she took him on a tour of the estate. During the tour the two had a chance to talk and it only seemed to solidify his opinion of her. He finds her approach to things similar to his own and he is glad to have someone like that in charge, especially with her being Ishgardian as well. With her coma and following memory problems after a job gone south in the Shroud Gaston seemed to get closer to Madison. Supporting and helping her out as she started to reorient herself with everything that was going on. This of course began to make him feel like he could trust her as a friend. While there was a bit of distance randomly between the two her assistance in resolving the problems he had back in Ishgard only served to reinforce his opinion of her. He has grown used to her close company in the recent days following the dissolving of the Pathfinders' Free Company. Due to those events she spent quite a bit of time in the forge as he worked, and once more seems to do what he can to help her through things.
Himeko Hasegawa. ($) - The Mother Hen
Character's Thoughts: "I like how she considers those closest to her as part of her family, it's an interesting notion though she pushes herself beyond her limits it seems far too often because of it."
The silent and often withdrawn Hime was someone that Gaston always wondered about at first. Often taking time out of her day to cook a meal for everyone he has always pondered how everyone fit into things in her mind. Yet as he grew to know her he realized that she did things like that because for her the Company was family. Nothing more, nothing less. The fact that she was able to see people like that earner her a large measure of respect from Gaston, who had long since given up on trusting the majority of people, and gave him a new perspective on things. With things closing down and just the four of them living at the estate now he wonders how much more there is to her to know, and figures these are things he will probably learn rather quickly.

What I Will Roleplay

Grim and Dark: I enjoy grim and dark story lines and have no issue with some of the more mature aspects of roleplay.
Combat: Combat RP is always okay for me whether its full on combat or just a simple spar.

What I Won't Roleplay

Character Death: I am not okay with any situation that would kill or maim my character without extensive talks before hand and even then I may decline it.
Straight-up ERP: I am a fan of a character having a reason for everything, and there for just no reason ERP is not something I will ever partake in.
