Basic Character

Glacir (Pronounced glay-seer) is an academic, always found engaged in some manner of research or the application of said research. Be it ancient texts of healing and battle strategy, the complex patterns of the cosmos above, or even distilling potions and remedies from wild plants, he strives to fill his mind with knowledge and skills for any feasible situation. With his nose usually in some book or another, it has lead him to lead a fairly solitary life, but those who contribute to his research or pry him from them find a man who is sincere and passionate.

Appearance

Glacir is average height for a Midlander, standing just shy of six fulms tall. Despite his devotion to academics, his field work has given him quite a bit of noticeable muscle tone. He has medium length light brown hair with dark chestnut highlights in his bangs and at the tips. Behind his bangs, his eyes are a deep turquoise blue. On his right cheek he has a faint red tattoo, a reminder of his roots before he began his travels. On his left shoulder, he has tattoos of an hourglass and a scroll, the symbols of Althyk and Thaliak respectively.

In regards to attire it varies depending on his activity. When he travels to locations where he must look his best, he can be found in various manners of cloaks and robes, long cloth garments favored by spell casters and researchers that make him seem official and respectable. When out on field work, he alters his attire to whatever would best suit the activity, ranging from heavier protective gear when gathering volatile ingredients to lightweight vests and leggings when going around town shopping. However, his most common attire is what he wears when he is relaxing or doing personal research. In these situations, he often goes with the simplest, comfortable clothing he has: a Moonfire Faire yukata, a pair of shorts, and sandals. Despite the somewhat revealing nature of the outfit, he will wear it in the open if his research requires travel, simply because changing would be too much of a hassle.

Personality

Glacir is a reserved, calm person. He takes his time to plan actions out when presented with challenges, and when he fails he examines the outcome to learn from the mistakes. When a topic or event catches his interest Glacir is known to grow quite passionate and devote his full attention to it. All these factors make him a bit of a loner, but despite the outward appearance of being walled off or preoccupied, he will gladly put aside his current research to socialize with others.

History

Birth and Early Life

Glacir was born to a pair of traveling merchants and sailors while docked in Sharlayan. Deciding it would be best for the boy to grow up before taking him out to sea, his parents bought a small house and shop in a port town where they raised Glacir, while the rest of the traders and sailors continued their voyage. As he grew, Glacir spent his days watching his parents tend their shop and practicing basic seafaring tasks on docked boats. But what truly sparked the boy's interest, was the various wizened researchers and inventors that came and went through the town. In particular, he took quite an interest in an old Seawolf Roegadyn researcher, who was always followed around by a pair of mammets and a carbuncle. Any day the researcher was in town Glacir would follow and watch the various experiments he would conduct, often times seeing them fail, but always with amazement and focused interest.

As he grew older, Glacir became more involved in his parents' store, running errands and delivering orders for those who were unable to make it into town. On numerous occasions these deliveries would end with him staying out as late as possible, as his interest in the customers' research would have him stay to discuss or observe whatever they were planning. While the late returns worried his parents, they did not worry too much knowing their son's interests and encouraging him to learn and experience as much as he could before the time came they would return to a life of travel.

First Apprenticeship and Departure from Sharlayan

Upon Glacir's 15th birthday, it was decided that he and his parents would return to the ship they had left when next it docked at the town in half a year's time. Wanting their son to make the most of the time remaining to prepare and say goodbye to the land that had been his home, they gave him leave to wander and do as he wished. For the first few days, he simply climbed up the taller hills outside the town and watched the land, taking in the fact that he would leave. After a week, he started to roam the port town, greeting friends and customers as he went, looking through the other shops and stalls. After the first month had passed, he had gathered a small pack of supplies, and left the town, traveling a few malms out until he encountered a small home away from the main road. Knocking upon the door, he was greeted by the old Roegadyn researcher he had followed and watched as a child. Showing up unannounced, Glacir pleaded with the man to let him study under his guidance for the months he had left before his departure. Much to his surprise, the Roegadyn agreed almost instantly, and welcomed the boy into his home.

For four months Glacir lived with the researcher, studying the basic properties of the aether and how to focus and concentrate it into spells and other useful forms. Despite his passion for the subject and retention of the knowledge, applying the theories in practice proved a challenge with a rod or staff, the only magical tools the boy could afford. Seeing the struggled Glacir was having with his chosen equipment in his second month of study, the Roegadyn offered him an alternative: an old grimoire and quill. Explaining the basics to Glacir, the old researcher demonstrated how the symbols and writings within the grimoire could channel the aether within and around him into spells of destruction, healing, or even creation of a carbuncle. Opening the book himself, Glacir picked up on the process much faster, casting his first basic spell within the hour, and consequently breaking a sizable hole in the researcher's window. In his final month of study under the Roegadyn, Glacir mastered three spells, and was gifted numerous tomes to further his knowledge during his remaining month on land, and subsequent voyage.

When at last the time came for Glacir and his parents to leave Sharlayan for the open sea once more, his Roegadyn teacher came to the port town to see him off. While the boat was loaded with supplies and cargo, the old researcher told Glacir of his past as a sailor himself, a tactician for a large naval fleet in a land to the south. But as he had grown older and the crews younger, he couldn't keep up and stepped down from his post. Eventually finding his way to Sharlayan, he had planned to live out his days drinking and researching. But when fate dropped a young lad eager to learn on his doorstep, just as he was about to take to the sea no less, the Roegadyn was compelled to oblige and impart what skills he could. As a final gesture and reminder of the skills he had learned, the old researcher took Glacir to a local tattoo artist and, with the consent of the boy's parents, marked his right cheek before he boarded the boat, leaving Sharlayan behind.

Seafaring Life and The Calamity

Traveling across the seas to various ports across the land, Glacir and his family eventually docked in northern Eorzea, making a point to avoid regions in which Primal activities had been reported. During these travels, Glacir continues his study of magic, practicing beneficial and healing magic on the boat when required, and more dangerous, destructive spells when given shore-leave. It was a peaceful, simple life for the most part. Occasional scuffles with bandits and pirates kept things from becoming dull, and Glacir made due with what he had.

At least until The Calamity. 1572, as Glacir was turning 18, he and his family watched from the sea as the lesser moon began to descend. Taking it as an ill omen, the trading vessel ceased it's travels to Eorzea, and set course to a safer shore. As they traveled, they saw a bright flash across the sky as Dalmund burst and Bahamut razed the landscape. Leaving the region behind, the ship docked at a distant port, and began resorting to alternate trade routes to keep away from the turbulent waters and lands. While his family and the ship weighed their own survival and safety higher than any opportunity to help Eorzea, Glacir felt an urge to turn back and help the people by putting his knowledge and skills to a wider use.

Return to Sharlayan and Adventuring Start

After a few years of traveling the alternate trade routes, the trader ship eventually made landfall in Sharlayan once more. Glacir, taking this chance for some time away from the ship, went back to the port town he grew up in. Still frustrated over his family's reluctance to return to Eorzea he wandered around the town, trying to sort through his feelings and thoughts. Needing someone to bounce his ideas and concerns off of, Glacir inquired about the old Seawolf researcher and learned he still resided at the same small building off the main road. Visiting his old mentor, Glacir explained his feelings and for the first time learned of the scale of the destruction wrought by Bahamut. With the knowledge only spurring him on more, Glacir made his ultimate decision to leave the trading vessel and set out on his own. Whether unable or unwilling to stop the young man, the old Roegadyn gave Glacir a final gift, a letter of recommendation to the Arcanist Guild of Limsa Lominsa. With the letter and his belongings packed, and various tools and books for his spell casting and research, Glacir went forth to further his knowledge and apply it as an adventurer in Eorzea.

Since Then

Glacir's life as an adventurer has been remarkably uneventful. Welcomed with open arms at the Arcanist Guild, he settled in Limsa quite easily, traveling on occasion to the edges of Vylbrand to conduct field research or help keep the peace when pirates got unruly. Being located in the most active ports of Eorzea, Glacir was easily able to keep in touch with Sharlayan colleagues, as well as any traveling researchers from within the realm. Among those contacts and associates, a few were able to offer him tomes and personal notes on rarer arts of spellcraft, including Summoning and Nymian healing arts. While the knowledge within the tomes fascinated Glacir to no end, without ready access to corresponding Soul Crystals his research ended at theory for these subjects.

As more time passed, one of Glacir's contacts in Sharlayan gifted him a Star Globe and books on Sharlayan Astrology, one of few studies Glacir had overlooked during his childhood. With growing interest in the subject, Glacir made quick work of memorizing the books and notes his associate had sent him, and soon headed off towards Coerthas and the Holy See of Ishgard, the land at the forefront of astrology in Eorzea. Immediately turned away, and realizing that the studies performed by the Observatorium's astrologians was vastly different from that which his contact had sent, Glacir turned instead to self-study and advancement of the research given to him.

With Primal uprisings becoming an all too frequent threat to the land, Glacir has participated in a few large scale operations to push back the beast tribes, and destroy their gods. In one such encounter with a revived Titan he discovered he possessed some natural resistance to Tempering, which allowed him to lend his spellcasting talents to the front line of adventurers and troops. Since that encounter, Glacir has set out to determine the source of his resistance and to test its limits, within reason.
