Appearance & Personality

Halren Rhalsgard appears to be an older Highlander man, most likely in his mid-fifties. He has a grandfatherly bearing, moving slowly but deliberately most of the time. He has the lines of age running along his face, along with a few scars. He wears his hair in a close-crop, almost shaved fashion, and keeps a trimmed beard along his jawline and chin. Deep lines of grey show in both his hair and beard. Asked about himself, he might add that he lost an eye in a duel, and the hearing in his left-ear from standing too near a cannon-blast. Despite his age, he keeps himself relatively physically fit, and it's clear that he's lost weight since leaving his former life of privilege behind him.

Halren typically wears loose-fitting, comfortable clothes in a Highlander and Ala Mhigan fashion. He dresses conservatively, but without any of the frippery usually associated with nobility. Most of the clothing he wears is old, and a bit frayed around the edges.

Halren's armor is old, but well-cared-for. Still, it hardly seems fitting for an Ala Mhigan general. Instead, he looks more like a common sellsword when dressed for battle.

He speaks with a warm, deep, sonorous voice, usually gently and softly. He carries himself with a certain sense of humility and nobility, and seems to be more interested in other people than he is in telling his own stories. He is polite, almost to a fault, and is generally kind to others, especially refugees, children, and the lowfolk.

Biography

"So, you want to know a thing or two about Halren Rhaslgard, eh?" He's an older gentleman, this one. He creaks, slowly into a nearby chair.

He sits down, chuckling, "Just the highlights then, hm?"

"I was born in Ala Mhigo, In the year 1527 of the Sixth Astral Era. Son of a nobleman, and an heir to the house of Rhalsgard. Descendent of a long line of noblemen, soldiers, generals... my grandfather fought in the Autumn War, you know."

The older man looks around for a moment, "Ah, might I have a glass of water? My throat- ah! Here we are. Many thanks." He smiles, pausing to take a long drink before continuing his story.

"I was, of course, brought up in the traditional way. Off to the military academy as a youngster, graduation and an officer's commission by my eighteenth year. I was a good soldier, a bright student, a devoted servant of Rhalgar and my family."

His face darkens, now, his tone grows harsher as he speaks.

"And then it all changed. The King of Ruin came to power. My father wouldn't bend the knee. Wouldn't cast aside his honor, or our faith. And so he died. Executed when he refused to aid in the persecution of his friends, his allies, his comrades."

Halren shrugs, "I, unfortunately, did not have the luxury of a noble death. For the sake of my mother, my sisters, my brothers, my own children... I cast aside my father's faith. And my... moral flexibility was rewarded."

"I became a captain. A lieutenant. A general. I did many things I'm not proud of, and few that I am."

He falls quiet for a long moment.

When the Garleans came, we thought we had our chance. I'd joined a small circle of grumblers in the officer's corps. Some worshipped the old god in the secret, others merely resented what had been taken from us. So, when the Garleans offered their aid, we took it. We opened our gates… and doomed our city.”

He sighs, “You can guess the rest, I think. The Garleans took our city, our lands, our sons and daughters. For my protests, I earned myself exile. I’d already betrayed my people once, I wouldn’t do it again.”

He smiles, “And so, I find myself here. A poor, humble refugee, hoping to do a bit of good.”

RP Hooks

■ Halren was of relative note within the Ala Mhigan military, prior to the fall of the city. Any member of the Ala Mhigan military or nobility would likely have heard of him.
■ He is a frequent site among the refugees and settlers of Little Ala Mhigo. He quietly donates coin to the community, and anyone with dealings there might know him.
■ Rhalsgard is a rather low-key member of the Ala Mhigan resistance. Far from an active member, he nonetheless sometimes "offers" his "wisdom" to other leaders in the resistance.
