“When I heard the way your father spoke, I was overcome with stories of the West. His passion for his devout life to Rhalgr made even my spirit burn brighter. No one could possibly convince me otherwise, that his son is not the very incarnation of that burning spirit. In mine eyes, you are Rhalgr.”

-Izumi Seiwa speaking to her newborn son. 1544 of the Sixth Astral Era.

Hiko Mitsunari is a mature character. The themes within his story are intended for a mature audience capable of handling extreme violence, questionable and realistic tropes, and graphic situations.

General Appearance

Growing up in a port of Doma, Hiko Mitsunari was an oddity that never truly fit in with his surroundings. Born of a union between a strong Ala Mhigan man and a Doma prostitute, Hiko appears to have won out in terms of pure genetic luck. Regardless of his mother’s status, she was born of strong stock that attributed to Hiko’s sturdy health. The child of a whore had only the most important things to lose during his upbringing, forcing Hiko to tirelessly work several different crafts to ensure his own survival.

Attributed to his father, Hiko’s frame is broad and tall, reaching a full six fulms, five ilms that easily towered over all but the Auri peoples living in Doma. Traditionally one would have found Hiko garbed in the loose garb of the samurai, but since his arrival in Eorzea and the crafts of the Far East becoming harder to come by, he has since had to make several compromises. Regardless of his sturdy height and herculean build, Hiko has lost nothing of his dexterity, oftentimes capable of drawing his sword and returning it to its scabbard before the enemy has the chance to see the strike.

A thick mane of auburn hair sits messily upon his head, oftentimes getting in the way of his eyes. Hidden by his hair are a pair of thick eyebrows that would otherwise show the genuine man’s true thoughts on nearly any given situation by how expressively they react in the midst of a conversation. Angular features leave his chiseled face sharp, presenting a handsome face that would have fit in well with nobility were it not for the stubble clinging to his chin and cheeks. Accompanying that rugged facial hair were marks of battle, sustained from careless bouts that often got him into more trouble than was originally worth on the streets of Doma and the various townships of Eorzea. In honor of his own father, what etching he had of him, Hiko tattooed his face with similar markings to his father, although more clear-cut and precise, like the blades he was accustomed to wielding.

Broad shoulders presented the border for the man’s frame, narrowing down as his figure traveled to his waist. Believing that a master of the sword also required being a master of the body, Hiko traded sought after goods on the ports of Doma for any and all information of the mysterious Ala Mhigan martial arts practiced by their so-called monks. With each shred of new information, Hiko’s body underwent a rigorous training regime that shaped his body like the edifice of Rhalgr. With arms coiled with power, Hiko has performed all manner of inhuman strength with each step in the direction of mastering his own chakras. An immense chest ebbs and flows with each powerful gust of air pumped into his lungs, leading down to a stern, tight stomach that showcased very little fat at all, save for a protective layer meant to ensure his abdomen was well-guarded during bouts of extreme bodily stress.

Treading down from his stomach, the man’s waist was pinched, completing the portrait of his desirable form. In the same vein as his arms, Hiko’s own legs are coiled with muscle, showcasing perhaps a stronger stress upon his movements than that of his arms by comparison. In both disciplines he has applied himself to, a level of inhuman speed was required of its wielder. Long and stalwart, Hiko’s legs were his finest traveling companions, never once faltering in his quest across the continent of Aldenard.

Showcasing his lifetime of battle, Hiko’s body is a canvas for all manner of scarring of various shapes and sizes. Multiple arrowhead scars marr his back with several other slashing marks and stab wounds. Particularly of note, there appears to be a faint bullet scar near his right shoulder, no doubt sustained from a run in with Garlean troops. Throughout the rest of his form are plenty of other nondescript marks from combat, particularly along his arms and near where he carries his sword.

Trained from an early age in the art of swordplay by the man that took him and his mother in, Hiko’s entire identity is shaped by the sword and the philosophy of it. Despite his own skill and fantastical ability, Hiko has shied away from any particular fame or status, instead choosing to forge his own path through life with the handful of companions he considers close to him. While not the man his master would have originally wished for, Hiko spreads himself too thin in the belief that those with the power to take up arms, must be ready and willing to defend those who are unable to. This has launched Hiko into several conflicts that he had no reason getting in the middle of in the first place.

A friendly soul that is able to see the world for what it is rather than clouding his own gaze with pessimism or depression, Hiko is quick and eager to see the upside to most things, unable to understand those who would allow themselves to be pulled down by forces they cannot contend with. While this does not always make him the most popular among his companions or the people he interacts with, Hiko views the world in his own way, seeing in all shades of color rather than the black and white that many paint its complexities in. This belief of trying to remain positive might be attributed most to his skill in battle, allowing him to stare down a daunting opponent and feel excited rather than sheer terror freezing his blood in his veins.

An avid social drinker, Hiko is oftentimes seen in the company of others while in any tavern that he comes to. While he seems to drink copiously throughout the nights he relaxes beside other adventurers, travelers, and refugees he almost never appears to become intoxicated. Friends have speculated this behavior most likely attributed to his training as a Fist of Rhalgr, his awakened spirit no doubt burning away the toxins before they can plague his blood and dull his senses.

A burning sense of warrior’s pride fills Hiko’s veins, no doubt born of the stories told to him of Ala Mhigo and its grand Fists of Rhalgr alongside the stern tutelage of his master. Oftentimes, Hiko will turn his sword around during a fight to ensure that his impressive strength doesn’t outright slaughter an opponent simply because today they happen to be at the other end of his sword, when tomorrow they could be sitting beside him telling merry stories at a tavern’s table.

Weaponry

Fuyutsuki: Passed down from master to student of Ten Shinsoku-ryū for generations, Fuyutsuki is an ancient heirloom that has drank deeply of the aether from its previous wielders. The soulbindings that have occurred with the sword have left it impossibly resilient to breaking and fleeing from its scabbard, when drawn, with the speed of a mighty gust. Since arriving in Eorzea, Fyutusuki has fallen into disrepair as the steel found in Aldenard is completely different in its ways of being made than that of Othard. With what little maintenance he has been able to do, Hiko has prevented the blade from becoming irreparable by means of oils and frequently treating it with the respect it deserves.
Fuyuhoshi: Similarly made as the Fuyutsuki, Fuyuhoshi is an heirloom of Ten Shinsoku-ryū passed down from master to student for generations. While it has not seen nearly as much use, typically worn as a ceremonial addition to the style, the Fuyuhoshi clearly has seen the light of day and tasted blood throughout its kind. The story of the sword and its significance states that when Fuyutsuki had fallen, it was Fuyuhoshi that guided its wielder to safety.

Attire & Accessories

Temple Garb: Offered to Hiko by Galmr after their travels through the Abalathian Spine, he has worn and taken great care of the attire as best as he possibly could. When repairs are necessary to it, he ventures - on foot - to Southern Thanalan, visiting the Ala Mhigan refugees in hope that they might offer some means to restoring it to its prior glory. While each time it loses some of its original lustre, Hiko maintains the outfit and wears it with pride, showcasing his place as a true Fist of Rhalgr.
Tantra Attire: Shortly after the final battle of the Dragonsong War, Hiko received word from Galmr to come to him in Southern Thanalan. There, he found his tutor upon his deathbed, stricken by some sort of infected wound that violently raced through his body. Bequeathing to his pupil the honored attire of the Tantra. When Hiko first adorned the honorable garb, he felt his body nearly rip itself apart from the sheer power throbbing within it. After long hours of training, Hiko only ever shrouds himself in the Tantra when there is no other option and he must give it his all.
Training Weights: Custom made from the forge in which he works, Hiko adorns his Temple Garb with what appears to be the typical ceremonial ornaments but truly they are training equipment. Each metal piece upon his typical garb: upon the shoulders, upon his gloves, and upon the knees of his boots are weighted to keep his body continually in shape even during times without conflict. It is said that a single weight is a hundred ponz.
Crystal of Light: Upon arriving in Eorzea and throughout his adventures with Galmr the Golden Fist, Hiko experienced an overwhelming agony of headaches most attributed to aether sickness. It wasn’t until his return from the Abalathian Spine that he felt the agonizing pain subside. Thus began dreams of swimming in a crystalline sea, seeing other souls fluttering through the ocean before a glorious crystal that gave off a perfect warmth. After weeks of repeating the same dream, Hiko awoke to have a light red crystal beside him with a dim blue light shining from its core. Never questioning it, Hiko has kept the crystal beside him throughout all of his travels.

While Hiko’s preferred method of attack is with that of a katana within his grip, being away from the Far East has made it increasingly difficult for him to find an agreeable blade since its shattering in defense of Tsubame Soga and Rei Mitsunari as they fled from Othard. Due to this, Hiko has made due with Eorzean swords, regardless of the serious handicap it places upon him or - most typically - relies upon the methods of the Fist of Rhalgr.

  • Ten Shinsoku-ryū: Heavenly God Speed Sword Style:

Upon being taken in by Oda Mitsunari, the samurai began instructing Hiko in the arts of swordplay to ensure that while he might have been born on the docks as a ruffian, he would grow into a respectable man. The sword style, passed down from master to student rather than taught in dojos, stresses a competence of bodily ability. The practitioners of this style carry with them both their katana and kodachi. Surprisingly enough, the kodachi is almost never used, meant as more of a distraction to an opponent for fear of the samurai using the weapon’s impenetrable defense. Instead, the focus is on several two-part attacks and movements that leave the samurai in a perfect balance of both offensive and defensive positioning. A single hand never leaves the gripped position of the scabbard, utilizing it as a primary means for defense in the event of an attack outclassing their own or the need to quickly alter their own movements. Secondly, this style of swordplay has a steady reliance on the usage of Iaijutsu (also known as Battoujutsu). The act of sheathing the blade and drawing it at rapid speeds to either counter-attack an opponent or unleash a premeditated surprise attack. The sheer speed in which those practicing the art of Ten Shinsoku-ryū has garnered it some meager reputation for being a style of mind reading and psychics.

  • Ken no Hakai: Fist of Destruction (Fist of Rhalgr):

With his Ala Mhigan heritage having always been treated as something of a romantic fairy tail, Hiko has been driven throughout his entire life to understand more about it and that of the almighty Destroyer, Rhalgr. Through this, Hiko has strived to gain any and all knowledge possible in the way of the Monks of Ala Mhigo. While living in Doma information was always a difficult thing to come by, getting lucky from various sailors or Ala Mhigan tourists that might have come through, but since coming to live on the continent of Ilsabard, Hiko has been given a greater understanding on the aether-enriched continent. Coming to know an Ala Mhigan by the name of Galmr the Golden Fist, Hiko was quickly educated on the situation their people have been forced to endure and gifted further understanding of their art. For several months the two Ala Mhigans trespassed the cliffs of Abalathia, turning their backs on the settled world below them. After those many months of ceaseless training and harrowing tribulations, Hiko and Galmr both returned far stronger than they were when they had left, both having been given further understanding of their chakras and - as they claim - a vision from The Destroyer himself. Utilizing the techniques of Ala Mhigo, Hiko is slow to open his chakras, always seeking to see how much he can take at his lowest before pushing himself further and further. Due to the flooding of aether in his body with each opening, Hiko’s body is put under increasing strain until which a point it threatens to leave him unconscious from careless use of his chakras. By the opening of the third chakra, Hiko’s movements become harder to track and his attacks become strong enough to break off entire boulders from a mountain’s face. With continuous training, it is a wonder what could possibly come next in his devotion to his temple: his body.

PENDING LORE CHANGES!

Year 1544 of the Sixth Astral Era: Born to Izumi Seiwa under the Fifth Umbral Moon, Hiko was named after a Doman fairytale hero who was born from nothing and fought the gods to earn his place somewhere in the world.
Year 1549 of the Sixth Astral Era: At the young age of five Hiko already took to helping around the docks as best he could to earn chump change to aid his mother. This coin was mostly earned through various odd jobs or running to get food for other dockhands. At some point, Hiko ran into a swordsman by the name of Oda Mitsunari who understood Hiko’s plight. With a kind heart, Oda Mitsunari took Hiko and Izumi in, giving them a place to stay where they would not have to work themselves to the bone.
Year 1550 of the Sixth Astral Era: After growing accustomed to living with Oda Mitsunari, he took to treating Hiko as if he were his apprentice, believing that he needed guidance and discipline if he were to be forestalled the ruffian destiny of nearly all who grew up in the underbelly. With a wooden sword in hand, Hiko set to learning the ways of his master and adopted father.
Year 1552 of the Sixth Astral Era: Coming to better understand his Ala Mhigan heritage, Hiko began rummaging through town for all manner of unique goods to peddle to sailors and travelers from Ala Mhigo or Ul’dah, always seeking further understanding of his father’s home and its culture. This marked the start of his dual training: swordsmanship and the understanding of the Fists of Ala Mhigo.
Year 1554 of the Sixth Astral Era: At the age of ten, Hiko and Oda travel the mainland of Othard, setting out into the wilds and the vicious steppes. Staying there for the greater part of the year, Hiko’s swordsmanship was put to the test, trained in a life or death situation against all manner of dangers, including the wandering tribes of the Xaela. While upon the steppes, Hiko ended up separated from his master, forced to find his way alone in the dark. During this harrowing journey, Hiko was set upon by two young Dotharl out for a hunt. In response to their own attack, he fought valiantly against them, dispatching them both by running away and drawing them apart from one another.
Year 1556 of the Sixth Astral Era: After several more training outings, Hiko became more of a true swordsman, displaying mastery over the art that was passed down to him by his master. Regardless of this, his own Ala Mhigan side had begun to stagnate much to his dismay. During the off days of training with his master, Hiko would sneak away to various alleyways to begin testing his skills with the power of Rhalgr. During one such training session, Hiko is caught by thieves without his sword. In a do or die situation, he defends himself against the vagabonds, surprised by his own slow-coming mastery over the basics of the fighting style.
Year 1559 of the Sixth Astral Era: Finding that his mother had begun to find other means to getting coin and instead had put herself in an insurmountable amount of debt, Hiko pleads with the crime syndicate, swearing his sword in order to pay off her debt. All the while, he and his mother keep this information from Oda Mitsunari, regardless of his ability to help them.
Year 1563 of the Sixth Astral Era: Spending years dirtying his blade in the service of the Doman Crime Syndicate by way of robbing various cargo ships and collecting debts from others, Hiko’s own foul deeds finally catch up to him. Arrested by the state, Hiko is imprisoned, awaiting whatever judgment to be passed down upon him. Learning of this, the now-frail Oda Mitsunari leaves his estate to bargain for Hiko’s freedom. Earning his freedom, instead of anger, Oda Mitsunari consoles and welcomes Hiko back, apologizing for having been too weak and blind to see the struggle he was putting himself through for the sake of his mother.
Year 1564 of the Sixth Astral Era: Upon his deathbed, Oda Mitsunari struggles with an illness that had been eating away at his body for the past several years. There, Oda bequeaths to him the title of master of the Ten Shinsoku-ryū alongside asking him to do him the honor of wearing his family’s name. In all shape of the world, Oda thought of Hiko the child he never had. In the wake of this, Hiko takes on the name Mitsunari and is left with Oda’s family estate, having not had a family outside of Izumi and Hiko.
Year 1569 of the Sixth Astral Era: During a walk through Doma by the docks, Hiko Mitsunari meets Veraint de Gerace. Surprised by seeing a Duskwight Elezen, as rare as they were to see, he takes the foreigner through a tour of the city. After speaking in length, Hiko offers one of the guest rooms in the Mitsunari Estate to the Sharlayan traveler. For the length of an entire year the two worked together, learned from one another, and became close friends. While Veraint had absolutely no skill or talent with a sword, he was quick to impress Hiko with his quick wit when holding a spear or lance in hand.
Year 1570 of the Sixth Astral Era: Shortly after the departure of Veraint de Gerace, Hiko leaves the Mitsunari Estate in the care of his mother Izumi and the servants that still remained at the household. Packing what meager things he thought were necessary alongside his sword and a weather-beaten journal with written accounts of an Ala Mhigan Fist of Rhalgr and the unlocking of chakras. Leaving the city-state without any true sense of where he was going, he travels throughout the dangerous continent on foot to not only hone his own skills with a sword but to strengthen his mind and spirit.
Year 1571 of the Sixth Astral Era: Early in his adventures throughout Othard, Hiko comes to a mountainous surface. The locals referred to it as a dangerous climb, as if its sheer surface was nigh-impossible to scale. Rather than accept that, Hiko set to climbing the side of the mountain, attempting to follow the paths that goats had taken with little success. Regardless of this, by sheer willpower, Hiko managed to climb to the top of the mountain slowly but surely. Throughout his travel, he hunted the mountain goats and subsisted off small portions of food at a time. Rationing his food and water, Hiko entered into something of a trance-like state where he believed he was communicating with his deceased master, Oda Mitsunari. It was at the peak of the mountain that Oda Mitsunari bequeathed more knowledge of the Ten Shinsoku-ryū.
Year 3 of the Seventh Umbral Era, 1575: Throughout the years following his initial pilgrimage, Hiko Mitsunari sought to recreate the visions he received atop the mountain. Always searched for new answers from his master and other ways to improve, Hiko would only end up seeing a vision of his master when pushed to his limit, on the edges of sanity, and exhaustion clung to him like the grip of death. Each time he experienced such a vision, he felt revitalized, as if a flux of aether was shot through his body to ensure he would not die. It was, in Hiko’s belief, that he was completing his training with his master and it was by his master’s will that he was kept alive.
Year 5 of the Seventh Umbral Era, 1577: After his harrowing journey had come to an end, Hiko returned to Doma, but not without struggle of posted Garlean sentries. Forcing his way back home, Hiko returned just in time to see his mother on her deathbed, suffering from the same illness that had eaten away at his master beforehand. Holding her close and comforting her in her final moments, Hiko did not feel the same sadness he felt in his master’s death. Instead, he knew from his journey behind him that his mother, like Oda Mitsunari, was watching over him from some ethereal place. Burying her beside his adopted father, Hiko began making preparations to leave Doma with the knowledge of Othard’s plight against Garlemald.
Year 1 of the Seventh Astral Era, 1578: Having abandoned Doma and sold his estate, Hiko uses the mountain of coin he gathered to journey throughout Othard once again as freely as he could. Hearing of the devastation befalling those still living in Doma, Hiko fought his way back to the city-state and stole a boat for the sake of rescuing others. Fitting as many as he could upon the small vessel, it was here when Hiko Mitsunari came to know Rei Kusakabe and Tsubame Soga. The majority of the refugees soon came to pledge themselves to their savior, vowing to repay his honor in any way they possibly could. Both Rei and Tsubame spoke of the land where the majority of their people were traveling to: Eorzea. Knowing absolutely nothing of the land, Hiko chartered a boat for the three of them to Radz-at-Han, seeking the last known place his friend Verant de Gerace had traveled to for answers. Upon arriving at the island of Thavnair, Hiko and his companions learned of his being imprisoned for delving into secrets, overstaying his welcome. Together, the three Far Easterners rescued Veraint de Gerace and left the island nation as quickly as they came, setting out for Eorzea. During the continuing voyage to Eorzea, however, Hiko would come to realize that the woman Rei Kusakabe would soon become heavy with child.
Year 1 of the Seventh Astral Era, 1578 2.3 and Beyond: Arriving in Eorzea, the majority of the group separated from one another for a time. Hiko came to know an Ala Mhigan by the name of Galmr, quickly taking to his words of strength and seeking to further understand the Ways of Rhalgr. The two traversed the dangerous cliffs of the Abalathian Spine while Veraint de Gerace and Rei Kusakabe traveled with one another. Rather than sticking with any of them, Tsubame Soga traveled alongside her kin, seeking to aid in their settling and various other tasks.
Heavensward: Returning from his journey with Galmr, Hiko sought out his various companions, quickly finding Veraint de Gerace and Rei Kusakabe together in Revenant’s Toll living among the other Doman refugees. Rather than staying in one place, however, Hiko’s adventurous spirit sought to drive them elsewhere, leading them to explore the mystifying land of Dravania. There, the three encountered all manner of dangerous creature, aided in the reconstruction of Idyllshire, and took on contracted tasks through the House of Splendors. It wasn’t until the all out assault on Ishgard by Nidhogg that the four were reunited. Hiko Mitsunari, Rei Mitsunari (having married Hiko in Idyllshire), Veraint de Gerace, and Tsubame Soga worked together against the threat of the Dravanian horde. In the wake of the battle, the group worked together to ensure the aftermath was cleaned and as many were taken to medical help as could possibly be. Afterwards, the group traveled to Ul’dah, simply living out their days through adventuring contracts and aiding the growing Ala Mhigan Resistance in their doldrums. As of this time, Rei Mitsunari, Tsubame Soga, and Veraint de Gerace had become irreplaceable to him, his most cherished allies.
Romantic Interest     Platonic Love      Good Standing     Neutral     Poor Standing
Attraction    Deceased

Rei Mitsunari "I never thought I would find someone as focused upon physical excellence as I. I am forever honored that Rei allowed me to take her as my wife."
Having met Rei as she fled from Garlemald's wrath, Hiko would have never guessed that the woman would later become his wife. As things currently are, he could not imagine his life without her. Even as he never expected to take her as his wife, Hiko left Rei with a child prior to their arrival in Eorzea, perhaps cementing the decision he would make upon returning from the Abalathian Spine.
Tsubame Soga "Unlike Rei, Tsubame is a two-sided coin. She is the subservient lover that any man would dream of and she is the dangerous knife in the darkness. She is an irreplaceable weapon in my arsenal."
Coming to know Tsubame at the same time as he met Rei, the two women changed his life for the better as they traveled from Othard to Eorzea. While not his wife, Tsubame is no less his lover and companion in the world they traverse. Unlike Rei, however, Hiko relies upon Tsubame far more in times of great conflict and battle, utilizing her ninja arts to their fullest.
Veraint de Gerace "Veraint de Gerace. What can I say? While his own combat skills are not the most honed or the sharpest, his tactical mind has proven to think ten steps ahead of his opponents. I am lucky that his plans are on my own side and not my enemy's."
The strange friendship between the Sharlayan scholar and the Doman Samurai seems to be predestined, as if the stars aligned perfectly for its happenstance. However, the two have journeyed together across the sea and experienced danger that has only quenched their friendship in the fires of brotherhood. Until the end of time, Veraint de Gerace will always be regarded as one of Hiko Mitsunari's closest friends and allies.
Alrik Dotharl "I have come to understand that while I have no brothers of my own, as far as I am aware, that there are brothers forged by bonds stronger than blood across Hydaelyn. We are brothers of the spirit. Alrik's and my own spirits exist together as a chain of erupting volcanoes."
The actions that brought Alrik and Hiko to know one another were strange and fast, as if drawn by fate to intersect. After visiting The Dragon's Crown tavern during an outing for revelry, Hiko has bled, fought alongside, and traveled beside Alrik Dotharl in their adventures throughout Eorzea. They have forged an unbreakable bond of brotherhood that nothing could tread upon.
Aelorelle Vallancourt "The owner of The Dragon's Crown. Many would run such a business and lose themselves to their success. Aelorelle, however, has never once lost track of who she is. She is a walking tapestry of Mephina's grace. I have come to understand that such bountiful beauty - while common among my own companions - is rare in Eorzea coupled with an unwavering heart that knows little bounds."
In the same night that Hiko came to known Alrik Dotharl, he made the acquaintance of Aelorelle in the same tavern. While their start would be rocky due to outside influences, Hiko has come to regard Aelorelle as a close friend and one of the finest beauties Eorzea has to offer. Woe to those who cause trouble in The Dragon's Crown tavern, for not only must they contend with the juggernaut of the Dotharl but the colossus of Othard.

Roleplay Information

Hiko Mitsunari and I are completely different entities. I do my best to never blur the lines of RP and try to keep the people I RP and interact with held to that same standard.
