Basic Info

Ilyara Dracht is a Highlander Hyur from The Black Shroud. She is tall and physically fit, with a generally friendly demeanor. She laughs easy and enjoys being around her friends more often than not. She does not put up with people who would dare to disrespect her or her friends, and is thankful for her intimidating size and stature in this regard.

Ilyara wants to see the world and hone her skill in weapons of all types. She began her training as a student of the lance, but it was the way of the fist which she found to be her true calling. Despite her love of martial arts, she wants to become a master of every weapon (although shows little interest in the magical arts). Since visiting Limsa Lominsa for the first time, Ilyara has a particular love of the Sea and hopes to one day sail it in some capacity.

History

Ilyara was born of a Midlander mother and a Highlander father in the North Shroud some twenty-two years prior to the present day. For the first twenty-two years of her life many claimed she looked remarkably like her mother, although she retained many of her father's sharper features. She would later lose a bet with Ko'sato Nunh and as a result would drink a Potion of Fantasia, emerging from her slumber looking much more like her Highlander father.

She grew up in The Black Shroud, not far from Gridania, with both of her parents. She lived a relatively quiet existence for her early years and enjoyed a generally carefree childhood. Her mother worked leather like no other for malms around and her father was a hunter of some renown who had settled down in his later years. As ten years old, her father began to take her on hunting expeditions with him, sometimes for days at a time. It was her first hunting expedition with her father which gave her a taste for adventure and the thrill of battle which would never truly be quenched.

Wanting first to wield the Great-Axe, as her father utilized with precision and ferocity, he instead placed in her hand a lightweight lance as he deemed it would better suit her smaller stature. He told her that a true Highlander warrior is a master of many weapons, and that the thick forests of The Shroud were more suited to the nimbleness of a lance. To further appease her, he told her of the legends of the dragon knights from Ishgard; the Dragoons and their legendary feats. For most of her teenage years she practiced the lance and learned to wield it with some skill. Despite this, she never forgot her desire to wield not just the Great-Axe, but all weapons. She strives to be the best at whatever she should try her hand at.

Ilyara & The Tribe of Ko'sato Nunh

At 18 years of age, Ilyara joined her father for an extended hunting foray of which included two days of venturing into Thanalan. Initially intended to hunt Aldgoat in Eastern Thanalan, her father decided that he would show his daughter the Sagolii Desert where he gained some renown by assisting a Mi’qote tribe in the defense of their people from a Sand Worm attack in his younger days as a glory seeking hunter.

It was in this foray into the Sagolii desert that they happened upon a tribe whom identified themselves as Hipparion. Ilyara’s father recounted to them the tale of his sand worm defense some years ago, and they were allowed to stay with the tribe if only for a day. It was in this time which Ilyara first met K’sato, a Mi’qote boy a few years her junior. As something of the runt of his litter, he was easily goaded into challenging Ilyara to a duel by the larger males of his tribe, claiming that he would never have a chance to earn the privilege of becoming a Nunh if he couldn’t even beat a Hyur girl from the forest.

The duel took place at dusk, Ilyara with her lance having been raised on the hunting of wild animals with her lance, and Sato with his sword, raised in the burning sun of the desert. Ilyara’s larger stature and longer reach gave her an early advantage in the single combat, easily knocking away Sato’s swings before they could come close. Though it was when she had him with his knees to the sand that he truly came out swinging. In a spray of sand and a flurry of of blows, Sato turned the tides in his favour, disarming Ilyara of her lance and driving her back, resting the point of his sword at her throat. Believing he had won, he relaxed his guard for one critical moment and Ilyara was on him like a wild beast, raining a flurry of punches down on the smaller Mi’qote. Sato yielded after taking a savage beating from Ilyara’s fists and she was declared the victor of their duel, much to Sato’s chagrin.

From that point on, Sato and Ilyara ran into one another from time to time and maintained a sibling-like rivalry over the course of several years. When Sato split off to form his own tribe with his tribemate K’Shere, Ilyara began to see much more of the two Mi’qote. Ilyara threw her full support behind Sato’s formation of his tribe and has backed him up against those who would challenge him for control of it.

The duel holds special significance for Ilyara not only because of the start of a friendship with Sato’s Ko tribe, but also as it gave her a true taste of fist fighting, something which she would later become quite passionate about.

Coming to Ul'dah & Hamon Holyfist

At 22, Ilyara finally truly ventured out of The Black Shroud on her own for the first time. She had spent some time gaining renown as a skilled adventurer wielding the lance and was eventually granted an airship pass as a reward for her continued service to Gridania. Her first stop was to visit Ul'dah where she was able to quite quickly connect up with her good friend and rival Ko'sato Nunh. Ilyara began to go on adventures with the Ko tribe whenever possible and enjoyed her freedom for only a few days before she finally met with Master Hamon Holyfist.

Ilyara had a deep desire to learn to fight with her fists properly, and being around Sato more often only quickly exacerbated that desire. It was within three days that Ilyara introduced herself to Holyfist and was promptly accepted into his school of martial arts. She found the way of the fist exhilarating in every way she had imagined. She lived out of the Inn at The Quicksand for some time while she studied under Holyfist. She learned a great deal while under his tutelage, but eventually he had taught her all that he could and she was forced to find another way to continue her training.

Joining the Maelstrom & Seabound

As Ilyara gained a bit more time off from her training she began to make more frequent trips to Limsa Lominsa as her yearning for the Sea grew stronger. When she was asked to join a Grand Company it seemed like a no brainer to take up arms with the Maelstrom. Their seafaring ways suited her just fine. She quickly learned however that there were a lot of obstacles that the Maelstrom placed between her and actually sailing the seas as a Barracuda and instead began to opt to look for a Free Company to take her to the seas sooner. Limsa seemed a sure enough place to begin that search and she was courted by a couple of potential candidates which she considered.

Ultimately, she had to withdraw her applications from the two Companies to which she had applied as Ko'sato Nunh approached her about forming their own Free Company, one which nearly perfectly lined up with her own ambitions of heading to sea and seeing the world. Within a few days Ko'sato's group of friends, including Ilyara, filed their application for their own Free Company, choosing the name Seabound as it could not have been a more apt description for their goals.

Religion

Ilyara is not particularly religious, although she keeps a small idol of Byregot, The Builder with her as it was a gift from her father when she left home.

Alignment

Personality

Ilyara tends to be relatively goal oriented and always likes to be working toward something. She is at her happiest when perfecting new techniques or seeing new parts of the world which she hasn't before. As she grew up almost entirely secluded to the Shroud, she is in near perpetual amazement at the world and the sights she has seen beyond it. She takes her personal relationships very seriously and would gladly fight tooth & nail to defend anyone who might call her a friend. She has strong moral values instilled in her by her parents and will not stand for those who threaten or act generally aggressive to her or any of her friends. She is usually lighthearted and happy, but she can be quick to anger when the safety of either her friends, herself, or even her state of mind are threatened.

Quirks

  • Cracks her knuckles when anxious

Flaws

  • Over-protective
  • Overly focuses on certain things, sometimes leaving other things by the wayside.

Fears

Above all else, Ilyara fears death. She fears it to a point which can cripple her in certain situations and force her to shy away from tasks in which she assesses the danger to be too high. It also makes her very afraid of certain people. Despite this fear, she is not the cowering type and her natural fear response is instead anger, though that's not to say she will always take action in the face of death other than trying to find a way out of it.

Talents

  • Ilyara has a particular affinity for most weapons which she picks up, so long as they are not for the use of casting spells.
  • In that same vein, she is also quite adept at fighting and sparring. Her instincts in hand-to-hand combat are superb and she has been known to react very creatively when the situation calls for it.
  • Drinking. She does less drinking than she used to, but she can still hold her own against a fair number of Lominsans in a drinking contest.

Intelligence

Ilyara is relatively well read and well spoken, although her central pillar of intelligence comes in the form of hunting and survival as it was her greatest interest while she was growing up. She is not terribly well versed in many history lessons, however.

Relatives

Ilyara is an only-child, but both of her parents are still alive and well, living in a secluded part of the Northern Shroud.

  • PLEASE NOTE: Some of the following information about Ilyara's parents is information which she is not aware of so please do not bring most of it up in character.
  • Gerbrand Dracht: A Highlander and a mountain of a man, Ilyara's father is a man named Gerbrand. He wields a great-axe with ease and spent most of his younger days as a marauder in La Noscea. He engaged in piracy for some time before being brought under the banner of the Maelstrom and eventually becoming a Barracuda himself. During his time with the Maelstrom he was ordered in-land to dispatch of alleged thieves in Coerthas, when he went there he discovered instead scared women and children, refugees fleeing Ishgard. Among them was Ilyara's mother. Gerbrand made a decision which he still lives with and chose to protect the refugees and flee to the Shroud with them. He cut down a number of his own companions that day, and ultimately deserted the Maelstrom. As far as Ilyara knows however, her father and mother met in the North Shroud.
  • Astra Dracht: Astra is a Midlander whom was born to a middle-class Ishgardian family and spent much of her younger years raising chocobos and learning to craft saddles for them. As she grew older she developed a desire to join the order of the Dragoons and take up arms against the dragons. However, her parents had other plans and were able to broker a deal in which she would marry into nobility in Ishgard. While the deal was being finalized her parents home was razed to the ground by a dragon attack, killing her family in the process. In the aftermath of this tragedy, she fled the city with others affected by the attack despite being promised to a noble of Ishgard. This did not go unnoticed and The Faces of Mercy were dispatched to end her life as punishment for dishonourably fleeing both the arranged marriage and the city of Ishgard. Luckily, it was Gerbrand who was dispatched unknowingly to do the dirty work for the Faces of Mercy, and not someone less compassionate to the plight of refugees. She is still in hiding today.

Music Themes

Note: Vocal Songs are attributed themes in which the lyrics seem to relate or partially relate to the character. They don't mean to resemble the character's voice. The instrumental themes are meant to give an idea of the atmosphere around the character. Songs with character names (example: "Tidus's Theme") are NOT meant to indicate that the character is like the theme owner. I just find the instruments and melody fitting, not the character the song was originally addressed to.
