History

Toyo (or Imari, as she wants strangers to call her) is a shrine maiden , just like her „mother“ before her and her „grandmother“ before that. For ten generations the female line of the family tended to their shrine in Doma, taught their daughters in their profession and mainly served as guardians for the village their shrine oversaw. Only the female side mattered in the family, as it was believed that only females were capable of connecting to the gods and wield their strength.Only that Toyo does not actually descend from their line. Her actual parents had tragically passed away at an age where Toyo could not remember anything about them. Her new mother had never told her of her actual origin, only that she was found by her and taken in as her own child, as she was already too old to bear children of her own. Toyo was trained in both using her celestial energy (aether) to enhance her strength, as well as creating seals and imbuing them with it. Besides these combat-focused expertises, she was to also train her mind for the heavenly guidance, meditation to commune with the kami of the shrine and with this speak judgement in small local disputes, though it was rarely successful for her. The miko of her shrine mainly earned their living through donations for keeping the village safe from threats, as well as keeping the peace. However, as the threat of beasts and brigands began to grow less of a real danger, the villagers saw less and less use for their spiritual and very physical guards. The shrine deteriorated, and despite their still proud posture and exterior, they were off much worse than before. Toyo's mother already lived nearly as a beggar, and that Toyo herself did not starve in her early years of her life was seen as a sign of the gods by her mother. When the Garleans razed Doma, Toyo was already on her own, her mother deceased. It was in these times that the donations were almost raining on her, as the villagers were hoping for her protection. Needless to say, it was not to be. She would not stand up against a force as mighty as the empire, and so instead grabbed all she could from her shrine, mainly the sacred relics they had kept underneath the shrine, and left Doma along with so many others to the promised realm of Eorzea. Here she now spends her days as a monster hunter to make a living and continue to hone her skills, with the hopes of one day rebuilding her shrine somewhere to pass on her families' legacy.

Personality

Many of the things that made Toyo to the person she is now have been out of her direct control.
Since she grew up in such near poverty, while still trained to act as if it didn't exist, she has developed a combination of pride for her heritage, as well as extreme greed for money and a desire for slacking and indulgence. Jokes amongst her friends go that throwing a coin behind her would be enough to distract her for a good few seconds. Like everyone in her family before she was taught little else besides the worship of the gods and fighting, which is why many more intellectually challenging topics go right over her head. The neglectance she had experienced in her youth affected her direly as well; since she lived under people who all near exclusively were much weaker than her yet never was shown or taught to be humble or kind to those less fortunate, Toyo has a hard time to care about others. She fought and fights to keep her alive, the well-being of the ones she fought for was only important in the regard that they were able to pay her afterwards. This does not translate into real malice however and she has been able to bond with people on a level stronger than her greed. Oddly enough Toyo never lost a distinct optimism. Her families intense focus on the female side of the family had great impact on her. The first time she had seen a man was at fifteen years of age, and due to this she easilly feels uncomfortable when around them exclusively for too long.

Rumours

The following rumours can be heard about Imari, predominantly in and around Ul'Dah. (If your character has an opinion about her, feel free to add it here.)

Common rumours

  • „Now this woman is something else. Saw her fightin' outside the city against one of them stone sprites. Didn't slash or tire it out no, she just punched through it!“ -A travelling merchant
  • „Doesn't seem like a people person, eh. Not in the moody way, but more in the „If I don't get something out of it I don't care“ type. Kinda sad seeing she got that pretty face“ -A gladiator from Ul'Dah (female)
  • „She had to come to me for five times now in the last four weeks, and every time it was more horrid than the last! A broken hand, a broken leg. I have no idea how she does it, but at the rate her body breaks she is able to fund my clinic on her own!“ -A mender.

Uncommon rumours

  • „The aetherial levels of this woman are simply astounding. She would be a great asset to the thaumaturge's guild..if only she could focus properly. Or had any interest.“ -a travelling Thaumaturge
  • „I could swear that mask is glued to her face, noone here has ever seen her without it. Sometimes though there are scratches or other damages on it, only to disappear the next time. Does she have a stockpile of them?“ -Adventurer at the Quicksand
