Character

General

Jolaine Durendaire is an inquisitor in service of the Holy See of Ishgard. She is also a member of a secret organization calling themselves the Hands of the Fury.

Appearance

People were hesitant to approach Jolaine even before she donned her inquisitor's robe. Ever since childhood, her face has almost perpetually appeared to be pulled into a disdainful scowl. Although silver eyes are overwhelmingly common in Ishgard, outsiders have described hers as severe and penetrative. Her build is tall and slender; she carries herself with the rigid posture of a schoolmarm or military commander. She takes great pleasure in the intimidating appearance of her inquisitor's uniform.

Combat

Jolaine is a self-taught arcanist of average skill. Forbidden in her youth to learn the arts of combat, she took to secret self-study with smuggled magic books. She never was innately talented, but she's nothing if not determined. Since her marriage 12 years ago, she's finally had the freedom to study without having to fear being caught.

Tendencies

Likes

  • Intelligent and cultured people. Especially gentlemen.
  • Children, particularly precocious Elezen.
  • Warmth - warm drinks, warm rooms, warm socks, warm blankets, and especially warm weather.

Dislikes

  • Cursing or vulgar language.
  • Anything physically uncomfortable or unpleasant (hiking, mud, rain, etc).
  • Criticism or teasing.

Talents

  • Clever; able to quickly learn and memorize through reading.
  • A skilled and frightening interrogator.
  • A talented calligrapher.

Positive Traits

  • Well-mannered and cultured.
  • Determined; always follows tasks to completion.
  • Intelligent (though not wise).

Negative Traits

  • Elitist, arrogant; thinks very little of those who don't fit into her narrow view of what's proper or good.
  • A narrow thinker in more than one sense of the word. She's closed-minded (particularly when it comes to religion and race), and also often fails to see the bigger picture. She's intelligent, but does not think in three dimensions. She isn't wise.
  • Has a slightly malicious desire for power. While she's not the type who'd do anything for power, she is a little lacking in the conscience department.

Relationships

Family

Jolaine was born into House Durendaire, a name which carries considerable prestige in the Holy See. (She has never shied away from using that prestige to her own advantage.) Despite the fancy name, Jolaine's immediate family is actually of very low standing within the House. Her father is the fifth cousin of Lord Drillemont - in other words, so distant from the "elite" line of Lords that they are considered of a "lower tier" than other Durendaire families. Because of this, Jolaine has grown up believing herself oppressed and disadvantaged (she is conveniently blind to the privilege granted by the name alone and her family's considerable wealth).

Juliembert Durendaire (Father): Jolaine's father was a fairly high-ranking knight of House Durendaire. Though they never seemed to have much time for one another in Jolaine's youth, after her marriage she grew close with her father. He passed away six years ago; a gash inflicted by a dragon developed a fatal infection.

Heloinne Durendaire (Mother):

Artoirel, Idristan, and Coultenet Durendaire (Brothers): Jolaine watched jealously from the family manor's floor-to-ceiling windows as her brothers skipped off to combat practice each day. Being the youngest of the family, she'd always wanted to be just like her siblings, but she was not-so-gently guided into a role completely opposite from theirs. Two of her brothers still serve as Knights today, but Artoirel, the "black sheep," owns a tavern.

Sylvaintel Durendaire (Husband): Jolaine was wed to Sylvaintel in an arranged marriage at the age of 22. Sylvaintel is her third cousin; in order to keep the family "pure," distant cousins are sometimes married. Her love for her husband is unrequited. Although the two are close friends, Sylvaintel is gay. After twelve years of marriage and one miscarriage, the pair have been unable to produce children.

Friends

Emerissel Marquaile: Emerissel is a man of few words and many secrets. The astute chirurgeon is the head of the Hands of the Fury, an isolationist group willing to do anything to keep Ishgard "untainted." Murder, blackmail, extortion, and torture are all justifiable as long as they further the Hands' purpose. Emerissel inducted Jolaine into the Hands eight years ago; it was he who convinced her to become an inquisitor. But the Hands are not what they seem, even to their own members.

Enemies

Jolaine has many enemies, who generally fall into three broad categories.

Outsiders: Jolaine sneers at all those not hailing from the Holy See. Roegadyn, Miqo'te, and Lalafell are particularly unclean.

Families of Suspected Heretics: In her years as inquisitor, Jolaine has sentenced more than a few men and women to their deaths. In some cases, her suspicions turned out to be unfounded, leading to the death of an innocent man. Although Jolaine is not very well-liked among the populace of Ishgard (as is the case with most inquisitors), only a fool would dare disrespect her. To defy an inquisitor is heresy, a crime for which there is only one punishment: death.

House Fortemps: In her work with the Hands of the Fury, House Fortemps has been the biggest obstacle to success. That they openly accept outsiders into Coerthas makes it more difficult for the Hands to sow bigotry, elitism, and xenophobia into the minds of the Ishgardian people. Lord Haurchefant is a particularly pointed thorn in their sides.
