Character

General

Given Name: Jonatas Carmina [Pronounced JOH-nah-tas Car-MEE-nah]
Aliases/Nicknames: His family calls him Jonah.
Current Location: Wandering around Gridania
Marital Status: Single
Sexuality: Homosexual
Religion: Although he regularly prays to each of the Twelve, he has a special attachment to Althyk, the Keeper.

Appearance

Height: 5 fulms, 11 ilms
Weight: 130 ponz
Body: Thin, fairly lanky, not very muscular.
Complexion: Fair
Face: Thin, a little elfin.
Eyes: Mismatched, having one bright green eye and one blue eye.
Hair: Blond, short and thick.
Fashion: Jonatas likes to wear soft fabrics. His favorite colors are brown, blue and green.

Behavior

Voice: Jonatas is soft-spoken. The more people around him, the quieter he gets, generally. He also tends to slur his words a little bit and may leave out a syllable here and there, when talking more excitedly.

Demeanor: Usually, Jonatas operates under a tranquil distractedness; his expression tends to be one of careful observance. Jonatas tends to be wary of those he does not know, and would rather watch social situations from a distance. He does not address groups and absolutely hates being the center of attention. When he does interact with someone, he appears calm and somewhat grim, though unfailingly polite. With time and some patience, he tends to open up; smiles are the first sign of his friendliness, followed by occasional touches, more animated speech and deeper conversations.

Quirks: Before a conflict or battle, Jonatas will often address a prayer for strength and courage to one of the Twelve, usually Rhalgr or Halone. After each battle, he prays for forgiveness, usually to Menphina or Azeyma. Although he tries not to show it, Roegadyn tend to make him a little nervous, partly just because they're so big. When he's alone, he keeps his eyes closed as if he's sleeping and, sometimes, hums to himself. He often goes to meditate in the wilderness, and has been known to spend several days doing so.

Intelligence: As the son of a fairly wealthy merchant, Jonatas received a well-rounded education. The philosophies behind logic especially appealed to him; as such, he tends to approach much of life from a fairly logical standpoint. He can read and write well. Since his father regularly drilled him on sums and differences, he can do them fairly quickly, though he avoids them like they're a plague. Thaumaturgy was included in his education, and he is still fairly strong in that art. One thing that he never learned was how to play an instrument; this is something that Jonatas regrets, and he sometimes thinks about trying to teach himself.

Combat

Style: Hesitant. Rather than fight directly, Jonatas prefers to heal others and provide protection. If he has to fight, he will do so using magic.

Specialization: Conjury. Jonatas finds that he has a special affinity for earth-aspected magic.

Strengths: Healing, Magic (especially earth magic), fighting from a distance

Weaknesses: Close-range combat, fighting multiple enemies at a time

History

Before the Calamity

WIP -- This will be supplemented and added to.

Jonatas was born the second child of an Ul'dahn family. His mother was a goldsmith; she mostly made jewelry. His father was a merchant that sold the things his mother made, as well as other things he got through his connections in the Goldsmith's Guild. His older brother, Mattye, was only three years older than Jonatas. They both had the same blue eyes and blond hair; had Mattye been a little younger, they could have been twins. It was immediately clear, however, that they were very different: where Mattye was loud, Jonatas was quiet; where Mattye was quick to anger, Jonatas was tranquil. As they grew older, these differences became more pronounced; it was clear that Jonatas loved to learn and took to it in a way that Mattye never had. The tutor that the family hired for the two of them seemed to recognize the spark of intelligence that flickered in the younger child's mind, and he did his best to nurture that spark. Jonatas grew up inquisitive, curious about the ways in which just about everything worked.

By the time he was ten, Jonatas had learned his first spell; it was a simple blizzard spell, not taking much to cast. He was immensely proud of himself, at the time; thaumaturgy, up until that point, had seemed like this mysterious, way-cool thing that he didn't quite get. He'd spent weeks sneaking around the Ossuary, trying his best to overhear anything that might give him some insight about how to actually do something. Eventually he pieced together this first spell and used it on his brother, who'd been beating up him steadily over the course of their shared lifetimes.

Learning this first spell sparked a passion in Jonatas that threatened to burn him up. His parents didn't understand this newly found hobby; they didn't have a magical bone in their bodies. It just so happened that the tutor they'd hired knew something of thaumaturgy; because of this, they asked him to begin teaching Jonatas the basics of thaumaturgy so that he'd not hurt himself or others in an attempt to use the art without being sufficiently prepared. Jonatas took to it immediately and learned quickly.

His brother left home when Jonatas was thirteen. Mattye joined on a merchant caravan that was run by a friend of the family. Their father was very proud; it was clear at the time that Mattye was much more like his father than Jonatas ever would be. This realization prompted Jonatas to bury himself in his studies all the more. He began researching the basic principles that were behind aetheric manipulation; by the time he was fifteen, he had developed a theory about the aetherytes. The theory was this: since the aetherytes were well known for their transportation capabilities, they were clearly able to deconstruct and reconstruct living organisms. Up until that point, if that organism were maimed or injured in some permanent way, the aetheryte did not heal this injury. Jonatas believed that if an individual fused some of their soul to the aetheryte, the aetheryte would then be able to restore the body to a more perfect state by resonating with the soul of the organism itself, whether that meant smoothing over old scars or restoring severed limbs. The only problem was that he wasn't entirely sure how to fuse part of his soul with the aetheryte. He dove into his research in a way that he had never done before.

By the time he was twenty, he was living in Horizon and working as one of the aetheryte attendants. After a night of sitting, bored, watching that giant crystal revolve and glow, he decided that, despite all of his reading that said it was impossible, he'd field-test his hypothesis and attempt to fuse a part of his soul to the aetheryte. It was early morning; the sun hadn't yet appeared, but the sky was lightening steadily. Jonatas took a deep breath and reached out toward the aetheryte. As usual, he felt the aetheryte resonate within him. With his mind, he pushed experimentally at his consciousness, which didn't budge. He touched the surface of the crystal, which was cool and glass-like.

I should probably use it like a medium, he thought to himself. And as he thought it, he did it. With gargantuan effort, he pushed all of his aetheric energy into the crystal and tried to circulate it back into himself. His body vanished and did not reappear. He wasn't seen again for five years.

After the Calamity

It was as if he'd taken a nap and had a dream. He'd felt like he was floating in a sea of light. There'd been singing. And then he was awake.

He was in a forest. This in itself was quite remarkable to him, considering that he'd never ventured outside of Thanalan. His head felt light and a little small. The last thing he remembered was having a drink at the inn in Horizon.

Oh, ye gods, what have I gotten myself into?

Noticing that there were no signs of town anywhere around him. He walked in whatever direction he'd been facing, which eventually led him past several angry critters into Bentbranch. He collapsed there, but he knew that at least he probably wouldn't die. He slept.

Over the space of several days spent in a room at the inn, he remembered what he'd done. Immediately, several things leapt out to him as not making sense: that he had somehow ended up malms away from any aetherytes, in the Shroud of all places; that there'd been any reaction to his teleportation attempt at all; that so much time had passed. The person who'd found him, a young Elezen girl named Laea, caught him up on what had happened in the last few years; the Calamity, of course, was the most important thing that he'd missed. He wondered about his parents and his brother, but he was sure that they'd found shelter and stayed safe. They were practical folk. They'd know where to hide in such a situation.

He'd also noticed that, along with being gone for several years, one of his eyes had changed color. When he attempted his experiment, both of his eyes had been quite blue; now one was unnaturally green. He wasn't sure what the significance of that was, if there was any at all.

He traveled back to Ul'dah with a caravan of merchants, rather than take the aetheryte home. On the caravan was an older woman, a priestess of Althyk, to whom he took an immediate liking. Her name was Jianna; she was a Midlander, like him. She was in her mid-fifties, still very healthy, with faded reddish-gold hair and wrinkles around her eyes that crinkled when she was trying to focus on something. They spoke about a lot of things; she was an accomplished arcanist and understood a lot of things about the nature of aether. His story clearly surprised her, and she made it clear that she wasn't sure that she really believed him, but despite this, they got along well enough. She was going to visit a thaumaturge friend that she'd not seen for many years. At the Gate of Thal, they parted ways.

Within an hour, he learned that his parents had both died during the Calamity, and that his brother Mattye had disappeared.

He spent several days in a state of drunken mourning until Jianna found him half-pickled in an alleyway. She pulled him out and sobered him up. At that point, if she hadn't believed his story, she certainly believed that he believed it. Together, they went into Thanalan and she taught him how to meditate. It was there, sitting in the dry heat of the desert, that Jonatas glimpsed Enlightenment for the first time. He heard the sound of distant singing. He felt a sense of immensity. He sensed the presence of divinity all around him. For a single moment, Jonatas felt contentment in a bones-deep way.

At that point, Jonatas took up the practice of wandering the wilderness and meditating, searching for another glimpse of this contentment. Jianna went back to Limsa Lominsa after a year of wandering Thanalan with him. When Jianna went to Limsa, he decided that he'd try his hand at conjury and communing with nature. He spent some time in Gridania, studying the art of conjury, and found that it suited him. Now he's returned to his wandering, and is still seeking to discover the true nature of what he sees around him and its relationship to the divine.
