Character

Name:

Montague Morne

Nicknames:

Monty

Appearance:

  • Height/Weight: 7fulms, 215ponz
  • Build: Monty is slender for his size, and slightly gaunt.
  • Eyes: His right eye is blue, with the left having gone white in blindness.
  • Hair: Dirty blonde and shoulder-length; he doesn't like to fuss with it and so usually keeps it tied back.
  • Skin: Pale, even for a Duskwight, though he spends plenty of time in the sun.
  • Other: He constantly appears slightly ill, with sunken cheeks and bags under his eyes. He attributes this to his ongoing insomnia. Has several scars: a cut over his right eye, a hole in his right shoulder and a large gash on his left shin.

Personality:

Monty is quiet. He keeps to himself, only voicing opinions when he deems it necessary, and will flat out ignore any personal questions directed his way. Somewhere along the way he became quite paranoid, leaving him constantly on guard and very twitchy in new situations. Despite these flaws he is still a good person, and would go out of his way to help a stranger in need.

(Alignment: Neutral Good)

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths:

  • Though slim, Monty is deceptively strong. Underestimate him at your own peril.
  • Loyal to a fault to those who've earned it.
  • A skilled craftsman.
  • Tall, haunted and one-eyed adds a nifty intimidation factor.

Weaknesses:

  • Lack of proper sleep has sapped much of Monty's energy, making him tire easily.
  • Loyal to a fault to those who've earned it.
  • Almost intensely private.
  • Half-blind.

Likes and Dislikes:

Likes:

  • Quiet.
  • Red and blue.
  • Rain.
  • Reading.
  • Helping people.
  • Chocolate.

Dislikes:

  • The cold.
  • Green and yellow.
  • Crowds.
  • Loud, unexpected noises.
  • Those who take advantage of others.
  • Seafood.

Quirks:

  • Speaks in a slow, hesitant manner, with an accent that jumps regions every other sentence. He blames this on growing up in an orphanage, and around a group of rather diverse fellows at Naldiq & Vymelli's.
  • Chews on grass stalks when he's nervous, claiming it calms him.
  • Hates the cold with an almost religious fervor, to the point where he is hardly ever seen without at least some form of long-sleeved clothing - even in the middle of Thanalan.
  • Has trouble remembering people's names.

Background

Pre-Calamity:

Found on a rainy day somewhere near Summerford Farms, Monty spent his formative cycles in an orphanage. He was quiet, even as a child, and always rather tall for his age. This, coupled with being one of the only Elezen - let alone Duskwight - led to the other children shying away from him. He never minded, preferring his solitude even then. Like the other orphans he was taught by the Matrons to read and write in hopes of giving the unfortunate children as much of a chance as they could.

When he became old enough he spent his days away from the orphanage, looking for work - not out of any sense of obligation, but because it was expected of him. He found it at Naldiq & Vymelli's , who had been looking for anyone capable of wielding a hammer to provide labor for the ever-bustling shipyards. Life continued on in the same way until his sixteenth nameday, when the Maelstrom stopped commissioning ships and began looking for men to crew them. Suddenly short of work the guild could no longer sustain its' numbers, costing Monty his job. Nonplussed, he found himself going with the flow of things and signing on as a Private, Third Class.

That was the last anyone saw of Monty, as a cycle into his service he seemed to disappear off the face of Hydaelyn.

Post-Calamity:

Monty resurfaced five years after the Battle of Carteneau Fields, looking decidedly worse for ware. He never speaks of the intervening cycles between then and now, merely shrugging off questions with an uncomfortable shift and a mumbled "past's past." The only thing known is that he has resigned his commission from the Maelstrom, operating as a freelance mercenary to any who can afford him, and convince him to give his time.

  • "I've never seen someone buy so much terebinth. He wiped out my whole stock, must have cost him a month's pay." - Ul'Dahn Merchant

Tropes:

Neutral Good: He's a good guy, but not overly concerned with the law of the land. He just likes being helpful.

Humble Hero: Don't expect him to take credit for anything he does. The act is the reward, and recognition makes him uncomfortable.

The Anti-Nihilist: Life is short and needlessly cruel, so why not be nice while you can?

Combat Pragmatist: Clashing with his alignment, Monty doesn't believe in drawing things out for no reason. If he's fighting you chances are you deserve a beating, and he's not going to waste time with honor his enemy doesn't deserve.

Knight Errant: He's a classic White Knight.

The Insomniac: Carteneau left him with bad dreams.

Exhausted Eye Bags: Not sleeping isn't exactly healthy.

Eyepatch After Timeskip: Lost an eye somewhere along the way.

The Quiet One: He's a bit shy.

Nice Guy: Monty'd give you the shirt off his back - providing it's not too chilly out.

No Social Skills: A lifetime spent avoiding social interaction has left him fairly bad at it.

Properly Paranoid: He's a firm believer in Murphy's Law, and is constantly on the lookout for life to implode around him.

The Reliable One: He keeps his word, for good or bad.

The Slacker: Not so much anymore, but before the world got blown up by a dragon Monty wasn't exactly a go-getter.
