Nature & Demeanor

Nature & Demeanor

Demeanor: Naran is a warm and kind-hearted individual, belied by her typical expression of disinterest and boredom when seen milling about more populated locales. The Xaela is shy and quiet around those she's unfamiliar with, but almost always friendly and welcoming. Due to her lack of studying, she occasionally comes off as naive or ignorant, and can become very self-conscious of this fact. She is easily embarrassed and quick to try to change the subject when made uncomfortable.

Nature: In her mind, Naran is torn between two halves: freedom and companionship. While she enjoys her life of adventure and exploration, free of commitment and restrictions, her time alone has left a void within her. The Xaela longs for more fulfilling companionship, but finds it impossible to express herself properly. Her thoughts and actions are motivated primarily by personal freedom and she can become selfish when it is at stake, though she does whatever she can to prevent others from seeing any of her flaws.

Habits: Naran prefers to avoid large crowds whenever possible, and can usually be found somewhere more out of the way or nearby some form of water, as she finds it to be relaxing. Those that spend enough time with her and are observant enough may notice the Au Ra's tail to be her most expressive feature – swaying back and forth gently when she's in a good mood, stiffening in anger, or subconsciously coiling lightly around her left leg when nervous or afraid.

Notable Features

Notable Features

Common Appearance: Naran is short - even by Au Ra standards - reaching only 4 fulms, 8 ilms high. The Xaela is lithe and athletic, her small figure honed by years of traveling and living off of the land. Her skin is an unusual rusty tan, with brilliant red eyes and fiery hair with a touch of orange to match. Giving a stark contrast to her faintly reddish skin are her soot black scales and curved horns, with a long, spaded tail that nearly reaches the ground. Her skin tone, unusual even for Au Ra, causes her to stand out a bit more than most and earns her more than a few stares.

Scars & Markings: Currently none.

Voice: Stiff, simple, and somewhat formal, she has difficulty with more complicated terms and names.

Clothing: Prefers light clothing that's easy to move around in.

Prejudices

Prejudices
Naran has a strong dislike of men, stemming from her time as part of the Dazkar tribe in Othard. Being the sole provider for a family she didn't wish for in the first place, she grew to view men as weak and a nuisance. She sees the men of Eorzea in a similar light, believing them capable of rising to positions of importance only through trickery and deceit. The Xaela has a similarly warped view of family bonds, believing them to be more like shackles to keep her from being truly free. This is part of the reason Naran keeps herself from becoming too attached to anyone she meets.

Abilities

Strengths

Strengths

Naran focuses on speed over power, and her small form certainly helps greatly in this regard. Her quick reflexes are both her best offense and defense. She is incredibly knowledgeable in the areas of scouting and tracking, and frequently relies on stealth to get the jump on her prey. All of her time spent wandering and exploring have made her something of a naturalist, an expert on terrain and the plants and creatures that can be found in each region.

Weaknesses

Weaknesses

Being so small and slender, the Xaela's physical strength is nothing impressive, putting her at a disadvantage in any situation where she cannot rely upon her speed. Naran also has no aptitude for magic, forcing her to rely upon physical combat when she must. While her great agility allows her to evade the more direct, explosive magicks, she is much more susceptible to subversive, mind-affecting spells.

Combat

Combat
As one of the greatest hunters of the Dazkar tribe, Naran has incredible skill and precision with a bow. More recently, the Xaela has taken up learning unarmed combat in order to better protect herself when use of a bow is either impractical or impossible. She has a slight fascination with the firearms of Eorzea, but has not yet devoted herself to learning their workings.

Relations (PC)

Relations (PC)
Kouki Hotokigi ( )
Naran met the dubious Elezen woman in Ul'dah, searching for aid ousting a menacing band of pirates from Sastasha. Naran offered to help, but quickly discovered the mission to be a front for a group of slave traders. The Xaela was very nearly captured, but it seemed as if Kouki took some sort of pity on her at the last second and helped her escape the thugs. Naran isn't yet sure how exactly to feel about the mysterious Elezen or whether or not she has some ulterior motive, but as of now she is grateful for the woman's change of heart and feels oddly safe around her.
Eranyl Suncloak ( )
Her first meeting with Eranyl seemed an incredible coincidence – the Miqo'te woman had wandered up to explore the same cliff Naran was sitting upon, gazing out at the wide ocean. The two became fast friends, bonding over a mutual love of adventures and exploration. Eranyl has expressed an interest in learning to use a bow, so it seems as if Naran's next adventure may be as an archery instructor.

History

Glass-hourglass.png History

In Othard

In Othard

Originally Narantsetseg, meaning “flower of the sun” in her native tongue, Naran has long since abandoned the latter half of her given name, believing herself to no longer be the innocent flower she was named for. Born into the Dazkar tribe of the steppes of Othard with fair skin, raven black hair, and brilliant, emerald green eyes, she was raised from childhood to be a huntress, and showed great promise with the bow even from an early age. One day, her tribe encountered a small group of Xaela claiming to be of the Haragin tribe, who wished to trade with the Dazkar. Against the wishes of her parents, who didn't want the Haragin to instill any odd ideas within their darling child, she crept out one night to meet with these strange and new Au Ra. She asked them a great many things – where they hailed from, what sort of tribe they were, how they hunted – seemingly fascinated by hearing about a region so much different from all that she knew. Wishing to humor the inquisitive child, the Haragin regaled her with an old legend of their tribe, one that had probably grown to be more than a little embellished over the ages: the story of the Haragin's ancestors, who had crafted a massive ship and ventured out into the wide oceans surrounding Othard. They returned with fantastic tales of faraway lands and strange sights, including a particularly sinister island covered with ominous gray monoliths and oppressive, flame-belching metal monsters. With that, the Haragin sent the child on her way, her eyes wide and sparkling from their tales, the seeds of adventure taking firm root within her mind...

Narantsetseg had an otherwise fairly normal and uneventful upbringing for a Dazkar – that is to say, she spent much of her time learning the finer points of archery and hunting, along with being taught her responsibilities and duties to the tribe. She didn't care much for the latter part, she felt them to be stifling – heavy chains holding her back from her freedom and yearning for exploration. Still, the Xaela played the obedient daughter, begrudgingly going along with her family's and the tribe's plans. It was only after being married off to a male she had no feelings for whatsoever and providing the tribe with two more children to bolster its ranks did she realize how truly empty her life seemed. Having a mate whom she cared nothing for, raising two children that seemed to be nothing more than restraining shackles upon her ankles, being forced to provide fresh game for her family and the tribe – what kind of life was this? Where had her dreams of adventure and exploration gone? What about all of the mystical and breathtaking sights she yearned to see? And so, Narantsetseg hardened her resolve. On one of her hunts, the Xaela snuck out with more supplies than she truly needed for what should have been a simple, short trip. She never returned to her tribe.

The woman wasn't without remorse, however. She was filled with no small amount of shame at having abandoned both her family and tribe, but she wasn't about to let feelings such as those get in the way of fulfilling her own dreams. Wishing to put a great deal of distance between herself and her former life, she found herself in the region of Doma, marveling at the sights of the foreign, at least to her, nation. Nearly entirely on a whim, she stowed away upon a tradeship bound for Eorzea, her mind racing at the wondrous sights she might see upon a new continent...

In Eorzea

In Eorzea

Life in Eorzea has been difficult for the Au Ra, to say the least. The language barrier seemed nigh insurmountable to her at first, though she has managed to get a few lessons under her belt thanks to doing various odd jobs for alchemists and other scholars across Eorzea. Narantsetseg still had much left to learn, however, possessing only a rudimentary knowledge of the language and even less of its people's customs. Other than accepting small hunting jobs, whether it be for lessons or a small amount of gil to get by on, the Xaela never spent much time around the more civilized regions of Eorzea. Instead, the woman usually kept to the road, traveling to whatever remote region her wandering feet end up taking her and making no land her home.

The incident that truly changed the Au Ra occurred several months after her arrival in Eorzea. Narantsetseg was exploring a complex system of caves beneath Vylbrand's volcano, rumored to have been built and abandoned long ago by the kobolds. She was searching for rare minerals for a reclusive alchemist working out of the Poor Maid's Mill – a dangerous expedition to be sure, but even more alluring than her promised payment was the thought of what a challenge it would be to explore a location that so few dared to tread. She thought she was being careful as she crept through the warm, dark tunnels, until she suddenly felt the rock crumbling beneath her boots. Before she could even begin to react, she felt herself tumbling down into blackness...

Narantsetseg awoke some time later – she couldn't be sure how long she'd been out – to searing pain throughout her entire body. She found herself in a large cavern, one that should have been completely black considering how far she was beneath the surface, but was alight with a fiery orange glow. Looking beneath her, she quickly realized the source of both the light and the burning sensation assailing her small body: a vibrant fire crystal, the size of which she could not even begin to fathom. She scrambled to get off of the burning, crystalline object, pain shooting through her limbs with every motion. Though it didn't seem as if she'd broken anything in the fall, the searing fire that seemed to be coursing throughout her body was nearly unbearable. After what seemed like hours, she finally found her way back to the surface, her slender frame trembling weakly and sweating profusely from the intense heat that seemed to still surround her. Making her way back to the alchemist's cabin, she felt her consciousness failing her once again and collapsed in the middle of a dense La Noscean forest.

Her eyes fluttered open after several hours, groggily trying to take in her surroundings. She was startled to discover the grass and plants in a wide radius around her to be dead, as if they had been wilted by some intense heat, though she couldn't feel any warmth as strong as what she'd felt during her scramble back to the surface. Unable to comprehend the series of events, the Xaela finally managed to return to her employer and was greeted with another rude surprise – the elderly man no longer recognized her! However, she understood why once she took a look at herself within one of the alchemist's mirrors – her slightly tanned skin from traveling the deserts of Thanalan had taken on a rusty red tinge, her sleek, raven black hair had become a vibrant, fiery red accented with a touch of orange, along with her eyes, which had previously been an alluring emerald green, now almost the same brilliant red as her hair. As she panicked over her sudden drastic change in appearance, the old man began to sweat, complaining of some unnatural heat. The two went outside to discuss what had happened, though the task was no small feat with Narantsetseg's limited language skills.

The wise alchemist seemed to have an idea of what was at work, though much of his explanation went far over her head. From what she could understand, being in such close contact to such an extraordinarily powerful and massive fire cluster had thrown the Xaela's aetheric fields completely off balance, causing her to become heavily fire-aspected. Whether these changes were temporarily or permanent, or whether they could be reversed, he couldn't say. It seemed as if the Au Ra had no choice but to live with her new body, at least for the moment. Though there was surely nothing sinister about a fire crystal, even being as unnaturally large as it was, Narantsetseg felt as if these changes were a curse – some sort of punishment for abandoning her home and people. It was at this point that she thought to truly begin anew. She dropped the last part of her name along with any reference to her tribe, referring to herself simply as Naran.

Over the coming days and weeks, Naran noticed several other changes beyond what was immediately visible. First, her core temperature was much higher than what should have been normal, or even natural, for any Au Ra, though she could feel no difference in her body for herself. Secondly, no matter how much she exerted herself physically, the woman no longer sweated. Instead, it seemed as if her body would emit excess heat into the air around her, making standing anywhere close to the Xaela more than a bit uncomfortable. And lastly, even her emotional state could have an impact on those near her. The air would seem to boil with her anger, or grow pleasantly warm in her embarrassment, for example. It was strange to try to deal with these odd new traits, to be sure, but Naran simply decided to shoulder this new burden, deeming it to be the price she had to pay for choosing this new life of hers. Her unusual powers have caused her to avoid civilization even more than she previously had, out of fear of what people may think of her, though she has found herself unable to close herself off completely. Over the past several months, she has grown to have a slight grasp over her new fire-aspected nature, though it can still slip away from her momentarily in times of extreme emotional peaks. On the rare occasions she does venture into a city, she tries her best to keep away from crowded spots, preferring to seat herself somewhere secluded or near water, where she can watch people milling about from afar.
