H I S T O R Y

Nariko was born the second child of her family, in a mountain village within Doman territory. Their village had a pass to the Steppes, and so, was a strategic village to the occupying Garleans, who regularly passed through, much to the village's chagrin. Her village was tight-knit, everyone knowing everyone, but outsiders were treated with a polite, but distant, emotionless reception, while Garleans received pure frostiness, many in their village just wishing the troops would leave. Her family was well-respected, their father was the village's carpenter, a trade required and in demand for all walks of life. Even as a child Nariko was fiery and opinionated, fighting every boy around her age in the village for dominance, as much as her elder brother, Eisei, tried to guide her to being more feminine and ladylike. Still, even with this attitude, her parents were able to keep her in line, and, she was actually obedient. Her father started teaching her in the ways of the family trade, not because he expected her to inherit it, but so that she could then pass it on to her children, but also to teach her discipline and patience (Or at least, try.). In the future, these woodworking lessons would be the only bonding time the two would have. Hr mother was a quiet guiding force for all of them, speaking next to nothing on herself, but talking all three of her family members to more reasonable positons where they could negotiate with one another from.

Her mother, Sen, died in childbirth when Nariko was 11, survived by her infant son, named Hajime. The peacemaker of the family gone, along with Nariko being hit by puberty, blasted away that little self-restraint she had when she was younger, and her behaviour became more and more uncontrollable. She'd get into fights, verbal and physical with her elder brother, who was, at this time, beginning to befriend the Garlean troops who passed through regularly, beginning to espouse Garlean sympathies. She'd skip out on her book work lessons, running off into the forest and hiding until her father gave up, only showing up to her woodwork lessons. SHe'd get into screaming matches with her father over her behaviour, over Eisei's behaviour, over his behaviour. The house became a war-zone. The only one who didn't experience her wrath, was tiny baby Hajime. Neglected and ignored by the father, who never was unable to stop blaming Hajime for causing the death of his wife, it fell to Nariko and Eisei to be responsible for him. In her free time, she'd go the the forge, harrassing Teruo, the smithy's son, to teach her how to sword fight. He told her no, many a time, but she continued to show up every day, for hours upon hours on end until he relented. Already involved in the Doman Resistance, Teruo radicalised Nariko, not that it took much pushing for the vulnerable, angry child.

By the time Nariko was 14, she had cut off all contact with her elder brother for his Garlean sympathies, despite living under the same roof. They would use notes to communicate, if they absolutely had to, and as he got older, they began to use Hajime as a messenger, too young to understand why his siblings despised one another. And it was after a colossal argument with her father about his neglect of Hajime, that he decided to try and extend an olive branch, in the best way he knew how. He was well aware that Nariko and Teruo had been spending a lot of time together, although, he took it to be romantic in intent. A marriage between the smith and the carpenter's daughter would have lead to advantageous benefits to both families, and so, he organised their betrothal. Initially upon hearing the news, Nariko blew up. She didn't want to marry Teruo, she didn't want to marry anyone! She had resolved to run away to avoid her fate. It wasn't until Teruo bluntly pointed out that it meant they could spend more time together, without being judged, and therefore she could get more lessons that she calmed down, and accepted it.

When the war of succession started in the Empire, Nariko participated in the Doman rebellion, and fought to liberate Doma from the Empire. This went disastrously, and after Teruo died with her in the fray, she retreated, heavily wounded herself back to her village. She returned in time to see the executions being carried out, including her little brother. She remained in hiding long enough for the Garleans to leave, before she frantically searched the village for her family and for any survivors. Her father's body was still in their family home, and as she grieved for him, for her brother, for the village, a lone soldier, doing one final sweep caught her and shot her through the back three times, from shoulder to hip, and left her to bleed out, slumped on her father's cold corpse. She was found in the nick of time by other rebellion fighters, who fled with her onto a ship to Eorzea, haphazardly healing her wounds as best they could while fleeing. She remained unconscious for a lot of the long boat ride, recovering from her wounds. When she woke up, she wished she had died, back in her village, and resented those around her for rescuing her

In Eorzea, instead of joining many of her fellow Domans in Mor Dhona, Nariko stayed in Ul'dah. More specifically, in a tent outside the city walls. Still filled with nothing but anger and resentment towards those who saved her, she wanted to be rid of them. This anger and resentment soon turned towards the Monetarists and the upper class of Ul'dah, and like many refugees in Ul'dah, she found herself caught up within the Ul'dahn refugee rebellion, which too, was quashed. For a while, Nariko did nothing but lay in her tent, waiting to starve and waste away, but that anger and hate and that fire soon grew back in her, and she had a new goal. Get as strong as she possibly could, and go out in a blaze of glory, killing as many Garleans as she could manage. To this end, she started taking on odd jobs from the adventurer's guild, spending all of her earnings on her weapons, her armour and food for herself, and she was eventually offered a place in a Free Company. This was where she met Lomnir, a fellow Au Ra she quickly attached to, finding in him the brother figure she never really had, and the pair were soon nigh inseparable. This was also where she met Zakrin, her mentor, although their first meeting was rocky, to say the least. When he left, she followed after him like a lost puppy, and Lomnir after her. Her and Lomnir now share an apartment in Ul'dah, paid for by the jobs that Lomnir takes on, and the savings from their work in Free Companies past, though a lot of her time is spent in the Aier household, having adopted the family as second one, as much as she'd never admit it.

PERSONALITY

APPEARANCE

Nariko is loud, abrasive, hot-headed, stubborn and fiery. Much like a typical teenager, she thinks she has a perfect understanding of the world, and those that disagree with her are just idiots or too old to get with the times. Unfortunately, she's also very stupid, so, she's often wrong. She doesn't admit when she is, though, and doesn't apologise unless forced, otherwise, she scoots and sidesteps her way around the issue, being contrite without ever saying the words 'I'm sorry'. her fiery temper leaves her easy to goad, and easy to make an enemy of, and she holds grudges tightly to her chest, rarely forgiving them. She has a big problem with authority that she feels is unjust, and will actively work to destabilise it, or ignore its authority all together. She's scrappy and determined when she has a goal in sight, and works tirelessly to achieve it, despite any detriments it may have on herself. She always takes a challenge set before her Despite her tough front, her trauma and history have left her immensely emotionally unstable, and she does wish to die. Hopefully, after killing as many Garleans as possible. Lomnir, Mochi and the Aiers keep her centred and 'stable', but should one of those pillars fall, she goes into a dark spiral that is hard to work her free from. Her progress had been set back, after being told taht she shouldn't be able to be happy as long as Doma was under occupation, and she took it to heart, though, once again, her bonds with others are slowly dragging her free of that mindset. This deathseeking mindset though means she takes little care for herself in combat, takes stupid risks and fights long past where she should stop because of her wounds, putting her life at risk.

Nariko has pale orange, straight hair to about halfway down her back, which she keeps tied back into pigtails. The ties were decorated by Hajime, so she keeps them as safe as she can. She’s very short, as much as she protests she’s not, and the fact she’s prone to bad posture doesn’t help. She has orangey/brown eyes with black limbal rings, and doesn’t wear makeup. She has clasps on her horns, and also a linkpearl earring. Her tail is long with multiple sharp spikes coming from the top, and is thicker than most Auri tails. Nariko’s covered in scars across her body, her participation in the rebellion left her near dead, and hastily patched up as they were evacuating. The most noticeable are the 3 gunshots trailing from her left collarbone diagonally downwards to her stomach. All of her scars are both skin and scale, though these scales are usually clear, flake away easily and look immature. She doesn’t care enough to hide them, and will absently pick away at these scar scales if she’s bored and has to listen to something she doesn’t want to. Her care for her appearance is beyond low, and she's always dressed in scruffy, dirty clothes, unless forced otherwise. Her armour and weapons however, are well maintained, well fitted and practical, it's clear this is where her care goes.
Aspects That Stand Out:
Well-worn hairties, starting to fall apart, that she protects viciously
Three obvious gunshot wounds from hip to shoulder
Dresses -very- scruffily, but her armour and weapons are well maintained.

RELATIONS (PC)

Yoshimasa Katsuta, Father. () - Clueless.
Character's Thoughts: "He didn't understand. He never did. It was always about him, him, him!"
Nariko’s father. A stern, serious man who struggled to keep his family intact after his wife passed. He was the villager’s carpenter, and trained all three of his children in the art. He fell in love with his wife, Sen and first sight, and demanded to marry her, despite her lower standing. He loved Eisei and Nariko, but he wasn’t able to get past Hajime’s birth killing his wife, and had trouble bonding to the boy. He personally, hated the Garleans and was highly disapproving of Eisei’s association with them, but also disapproved of Nariko’s association of the rebellion. He argued that the situation was fine as it was, and the status quo didn’t need to be changed. He would argue endlessly with his two elder children over this, while ignoring and neglecting his youngest. Nariko found his corpse in the family home, and was shot and left for dead on top of him while she grieved
Sen Katsuta, Mother. () - The Enigma.
Character's Thoughts: "I...dunno. Do I like her, or just the idea of her, from what I remember? ...Wish she got to meet Hajime."
Nariko’s mother. The peacekeeper in the house, she kept a lot of the clashes and fights that were so prevalent after her passing in check. She was a housewife, and wasn’t involved in the carpentry business, having come from a family of farmers herself. The marriage between her and Yoshimasa was arranged, and while he loved her truly, she didn’t reciprocate these feelings, but doted on their children like nothing else. She didn’t hate the Garleans, but did wish they left the village alone, and would keep the children away from the soldiers. She died giving birth to their youngest child, Hajime. Nariko was only around 11 when she passed, and while she thinks fondly of her mother, she doesn't feel she really has the memories to have a deep connection to the woman as she was, but, just the idea of her. She couldn't really tell you anything about the woman, who was notoriously private
Eisei Katsuta, Elder brother. () - Traitor.
Character's Thoughts: "I'm glad he's dead. Serves the Garlean cock-sucker right. World's better off without him."
Nariko’s elder brother, and the heir to the Katsuta family. Eisei felt women should be demure, happy to serve housewifes, which his sister was quite at odds with, and their relationship was never able to get over it. He was the biggest force pushing Nariko to behave more like a proper lady, first by trying to correct her behaviour kindly when she was a little child, but moving to shaming and deriding as she got older, and he lost his patience. He was actually friendly to the Garlean occupiers, and felt that if they simply accepted being part of the empire, then their treatment would be better, and they would be afforded more privileges. This caused many arguments within the family. During the razing, it was his friendship with the Garleans that saved him, and he joined the ranks of the Garlean military after. He grew up using a bow to hunt in the forest behind their home, but he took to using a gun like a duck to water. He’s unaware of Nariko’s survival, and she his.
Hajime Katsuta, Younger Brother. () - Youngling.
Character's Thoughts: "...Who the hell told you?! Don't you dare speak his name!"
Nariko’s younger brother, who was just 6 when the razing of Doma cost him his life. As a child, he was bright and cheerful, even in the stormy atmosphere home had, and both Eisei and Nariko were fond of him, although he was often used as a messenger between the two when they refused to speak to one another. He was Nariko’s favourite family member, and she’d spoil him to pieces, and threaten anyone whoever gave him a hard time. He tried extremely hard to prove himself to their father, in search of his approval and love, though he never did get it. Nariko watched him executed during the rebellion by Garleans while he cried out for Eisei and her to save him, alone and terrified. Nariko had skipped out on babysitting him that day to participate in the rebellion, so she blames herself heavily for his death, and remains traumatised from having to watch his execution, and be unable to do a thing about it. He remains her deepest secret, now, his existence only revealed to a handful of people.
Teruo Meiken, Betrothed. () - Forger.
Character's Thoughts: "Grumpy ass, always knew what was best... Didn't deserve the fate he got."
Nariko’s betrothed. The smith’s son, Teruo was the one who taught Nariko swordplay, and also was her main contact into the rebellion. Like many of the villagers, he harboured a great hate for Garleans. He was standoffish, grumpy, and far too blunt to deal with customers, so he was always out in the forge instead. But he was also a tempering force to Nariko, keeping her from blowing up and doing rash decisions. Nariko's father, noticing the pair had spent a lot of time together with her training, assumed they were romantically attracted to one another, and organised their betrothal as an olive branch to Nariko after an especially nasty fight. Nariko almost ran away in protest, until Teruo pointed out it would be an excuse for them to spend more time together training, without people questioning it. They were due to marry when Nariko turned 18, they slept together once (At Nariko's insistence, wishing to know what it was like) but, with him being uninterested sexually in her, and her disgusted by sex entirely once she'd experienced it, they remained as close friends. He died fighting alongside Nariko, and his death sparked her retreat back to the village.
