History
Origins
- Little is known about Nehlu's beginnings. She knows that her parents died in a large battle in the Twelves-wood when she was very young. She can remember being called Nehlu by them, yet, somehow, their faces are fuzzy and unclear in her memories. The orphanage she went to called her Nehlu Thaiasona, and so that has been her name for most of her life.
Before Dalamud's Fall
- Before the fall of Dalamud, Nehlu lived a rather boring life in an orphanage. She was at best an average student, not from a lack of ability, but more a lack of focus. The young girl was always daydreaming about being an adventurer, going on quests and slaying Primals.
- She didn't hate the orphanage, and was grateful that they had given her a place to live, but she knew this wasn't the life for her. Still, what could she do about it but endure?
After Dalamud's Fall
- Nehlu was twelve during the Fall. It was a night she'd never forget, hiding under her bed, her cries of terror joining those of the other children as the world around them seemed on the verge of ending. The next day, Nehlu's comfortable little world became a lot less so.
- Many people had died in the Fall, and left behind many children. Gridania's orphanages were filled to the maximum and then some almost over night. Suddenly every detail of Nehlu's life was jam packed with other kids, sharing food, sharing clothes, sharing beds. Most of the new kids were used to having parents, and naturally, with their loss, were inconsolable. This meant poor Nehlu couldn't get a single bit of peace, as everywhere she went was filled with crying kids.
- She had lost her parents long ago, it was something she was used to by now, but the crying and wailing would remind her of her own loss, and leave her heartbroken all over again. She simply couldn't take it anymore. One night, while they all slept, Nehlu filled a blanket with food and vanished into the night, running deep into the woods.
- The life of a wild runaway as not as easy as she thought it would be. What little food she had brought with her turned stale and worse rather quickly. Hunting and fishing were not the simple task she thought them to be, and many a nights the poor girl would go hungry. She learned that sleeping on the ground was a mistake rather quickly, when late one night, a predator thought her a quick meal. If she hasn't been able to scamper up a near by tree, it would have been her last mistake.
- As time passed, Nehlu forgot more and more of her old life. Survival was all that mattered now, and her more primal side emerged to keep her alive. She dug a hole in the dirt at the base of a tree, a place to hide from predators who can climb, where as the branches would offer her shelter when the hole filled with water from the rain. She learned to hunt during the night, to kill using her teeth and nails.
- Nehlu survived like this, as a feral hunter, for four years. By the time she actually saw the next person, she had long forgotten proper language, only a smattering of words left to her. The stranger was a miqo'te, like her, though several years older. She was beautiful and dressed in a fine, shining armor. She clearly ate well and didn't seem like she'd missed a single nights sleep due to rainstorms or predators. She was perfect, and Nehlu wanted to be her.
- Nehlu watched the adventurer in her camp for several days, wondering how she, too, could live this life. Her chance came upon her by surprise. The young woman stripped off her armor and dove into a lake. This shocked Nehlu to the core. She had plenty of food, Nehlu had seen it all. She clearly didn't need fish, so why would she go in the water?! Her eyes traveled to the shining armor on the shore...
Recent History
- It had been a year since Nehlu had stolen the lancers armor and weapon. It took her weeks to learn how to put it on, and even then, it pinched at her tail, pulled at her hair and fur. Talking and conversing were hard at first, so she played dumb, acting like she couldn't speak when she would visit the village near by.
- In time, she grew confidant in her new roll, and as villagers are wont to do, she was offered tasks. Coin for simple chores at first. Coin that she could trade for food. Nehlu made a horrible lancer, and anyone who saw her with the armor could clearly see it wasn't made for her. That didn't stop people from offering her jobs though, after all, if she failed and was killed.. they'd simply offer the job to the next person. This is how Nehlu ended up wandering from city to city. Still, the life of an untrained adventurer wasn't working out how she had hopped. On a trip to Ul'dah, her depression got the best of her, and she finally decided to give it up. In the middle of a delivery, the sky opened up and dumped buckets of water across the land, drenching her. Frustrated, angry, hungry, cold and wet, Nehlu took shelter in a chocobo stable, determining to go back to her forest as soon as it was dry. In that stable is where she fell asleep.
- In that stable is where Karien Faircloud found her. She woke the young Miqo'te, fed and bathed her. The Hyur woman fixed her armor and taught her how to properly hold the spear, so she would at least look competent. Karien offered her a chance to join the Ascendant Dawn, if the girl would train under her and learn to be a proper lancer first. For the first time in her young life, Nehlu felt at home. She cried as she wrapped her arms around the other woman, calling out to her without a thought, 'Oh, Mother!'
- Since then, Karien has indeed adopted young Nehlu as her daughter, and the Dawn has accepted her into their little family. Her new family knows little of her past, only little bits and pieces that she's been willing to share. She hides it from them, because she knows there is still very much a feral being buried deep inside her. When her anger gets the best of her, when her fear overcomes her, Nehlu's teeth and claws come out. A kitten at play on the outside may yet hide a cornered animal deep down.
