Personality

At first glance Ophelie seems to be yet another proper Ishgardian lady, while she maintains the manners and grace of her upbringing she quite lacks the demure, tactful demeanor that many may expect from her. She is quite outspoken, and considered a rebel for neither marrying or serving as a knight, instead she created her own path. Quite extroverted, she is known for flirting with men and being quite frank about her occupation as courtesan. Ophelie is well spoken and quite the conversationalist, he can put on the right facade for nearly any situation.

Due to recent events in her life, she has begun to see the injustices that plague Ishgard and Gridania. She has begun to question her faith in Halone, feeling abandoned and betrayed by the church’s followers. After immigrating to Gridania she openly questions the establishment and the treatment Duskwights and refugees, seeing it as no different as to how heretics are treated in her homeland. Ophelie harbors many resentments, towards her father, the Inquisition, the Wood Wailers, but she attempts to hide them seeing them as a weaknesses.

Many times she is selfish, thinking only in her needs and wants. She is a determined and stubborn individual. She will do what is needed to get what she wants out of life, to the point of manipulating others to her own ends and participating in borderline criminal activities. She has no qualms about manipulating, seducing, lying or using people to get what she wants. Her morality is very self centered, as she has long discarded Ishgard’s moral codes instead she uses her needs and wants as her moral compass.

History/Timeline

Ophelie is the youngest of six children born to Ser Roustebant of House Clemenceau, a vassal house under House Duredaire. Her family served as knights for House Durendaire and the Holy See. Ophelie rarely saw her father as he was away fighting in Ishgard’s endless war against dragons, while her mother oversaw the household and the children. Her mother made sure that she received a proper education for a girl of her standing, everything from reading and writing, to theology, proper etiquette and conversation. Ophelie was an apt pupil, and she excelled at playing music and dance. As the years passed her brothers left to join the knighthood and her sisters were married off, leaving her the only child still at home by the time she turned thirteen. That same year her father received a grievous injury on the battlefield forcing him to retire, her mother tended to him while making arrangements for Ophelie’s betrothal.

Her father soon began to gambling and drinking away the family fortune, rumors began to spread throughout Ishgardian society. Despite this setback her mother still found a young upstanding man for her to marry. Ophelie quietly accepted her betrothal as a fact of life, seeing it as opportunity to escape her overbearing father. Her father's habits began to escalate and he started to spend her dowry. Learning that his fiancee was penniless and without proper dowry he left her, seeing no benefit in the marriage. She was heartbroken as she cared for him, and blamed her father for “ruining” her. Her father attempted to make amends by finding someone to marry her, but the only men who were willing to marry her were older widowers, who wanted more children and had no need for a dowry. Frustrated with her parent’s treatment of her and not willing to marry someone twice her age who was only going to treat her as a broodmare, Ophelie took on lover to spite them and ruin her prospects for marriage. She invited a young squire to her bed and made sure that she was seen with him. She had won; if she could not marry on her own terms, then she would not marry at all. It wasn’t long before her parents threatened to disown her. At home she kept to herself and still participated in Ishgard’s various social gatherings.

While at a ball she met Aureloux a member of house Duredaire, he was charmed by her wit and beauty and she was smitten by his gallantry. He was married, but not in love, thus his wife gave him permission to seek companionship elsewhere. They exchanged letters and made time to see each other, and the two grew closer. After a year Aurelouc asked her to move in and become his mistress, she agreed to the proposition and moved in. Shortly after the calamity wrought havoc across the realm. Ophelie lived a comfortable life as his mistress, he took care of her needs, in return she provide him with physical and emotional intimacy. After five years she found herself pregnant, she decided to keep the child and allow Aureloux and his wife, Melisie, to raise the child as their own.

The air of happiness and expectancy was soon broken when he was accused of heresy and being an unbeliever. He was arrested, sent for further questioning and possible torture, and his home was raided for further evidence. He was put on trial in the traditional Ishgardian manner, and is thrown down Witchdrop as a test of his innocence. He died upon impact, but was still found guilty based off the evidence that was found. Melisie and Ophelie were sent to labor camps to repent for his sins. Together they conspired to escape their prison and raise the child together. They make their attempt, and the two are pursued and soon become separated, Ophelie continued forth for the sake of her child. Eventually she collapsed from exhaustion somewhere near northern Gridania, and she was found by a pair of Duskwight hunters, Ignasse and Jainelette. She eventually regained consciousness under their mother’s care, after hearing her tale, they allowed her to stay as long as she needs to. Taken back by their generosity she soon became like family to them. While staying in their home she gave birth to her son, who she named in honor of his father, and for the first time in several months she felt joy. Within a few moons he became ill, and soon succumbed to illness. She was left heartbroken at the loss of her son, and turns to Ignasse for comfort. Not long after the small settlement was raided by Wood Wailers, who accused the residents of thievery and assumed that Ophelie, the only Wildwood in the settlement, was being held against her will. They brought her to the nearest settlement despite her objections, and left her to her own devices. She eventually made her way to Gridania without a single gil to her name. Using her education, wits, talents for dance and music she begins to make a name for herself as an entertainer and courtesan.

Combat

Ophelie is not much of a fighter, but she can defend herself with basic conjury should the need arise.

Potential RP Hooks

Ophelie is wanted by the Ishgardian inquisition for several crimes. Several of crimes are, escaping the workhouse where she was sentenced to atone for Aureloux's crimes, and disrupting his trial, which made her a heretic in the eyes of the church. Anyone who brings her back, will be rewarded.

Ophelie was and still is quite the social butterfly, back home she was known for having loose morals and being a bit wild. If your character was involved with the upper class, they may have heard rumors about her being Aureloux’s mistress, her first engagement being called off, or her scandalous behavior. She can have friends from her past or newer ones. Considering her personality, there is a possibility that Ophelie has or has made rivals, either other courtesans or her clients significant others.

Her accent and mannerisms are also a giveaway to her origins, anyone who is familiar with an upper class Ishgardian accent can easily detect her accent within minutes of her speaking. Her mannerisms are also of someone who was raised as a noble.

Ophelie is an entertainer/courtesan, her services are quite expensive so her clientele are quite rich. She has various types of business partners and clients, anything from seamstresses who make her clothes to the businessman who hires her to entertain his clients.
