INTRO TEXT

Appearance

On the tall side for an Elzen female Rae has lost some weight in the last year which her already willowy frame could ill afford. Though she does not appear sick or starving there are more pronounced hollows under her cheek and collar bones and her clothes hang a bit baggier than they should. Though she does her best to maintain herself and her gear signs of wear and meticulous mending are visible to the discerning eye.

History

Her parents were skilled weavers who owned a small but moderately profitable shop in the great citystate of Ishgard. Though rather cramped for a family of three to live in the tiny apartment above the shop Raelynn was well aware that her life was much better than those forced to live in the Foundation below them and she tried to be an appreciative and dutiful daughter though sadly with limited success. She was always a bit .. high spirited, tending to rush though her tasks at home, playing technical but not exactly reverent attention at church, always looking for something new to learn and experience. Allowed an unofficial apprenticeship by other near by craftsmen she learned how to work a forge, (though by no means expertly and not alone) how to make "the perfect muffin" from the bakery next door, ways to over look the rather unpleasant smell of tanning leather, and to defend herself and her lunch from the kids from the Brume. Basically anything to avoid the safe but incredibly boring routine prescribed by her parents.

Things only got more chaotic in her teenage years. Small freak accidents, mainly fires tended to happen in her immediate vicinity especially during her rare bouts of anger or more commonly excitement. It was enough to draw the attention of a scholar named Joran Trenaris, who came to her family intent on investigating 'aetheric disturbances' he'd recorded in the area. As the youngest son of a minor noble house associated with House Foretemps it wasn't a request that the small family had any hope of denying, giving their home and their only offspring over to him for observation.

He muttered words like "anomaly" and "harebrained" she shot back with things like "anal retentive" and "bookworm" for there was no denying that Joran was a ... rather odd man. Sickly since childhood he was thin where she was toned, pallid next to her healthy tan, obsessed with records and histories something with Raelynn did her best to avoid where she could. He seemed to find her fascinating though, in a strictly scientific way he assured everyone including himself.

While he could never actually determine the source of her strong atheric connection he did manage to teach her techniques to control her outbursts, and somewhere over the course of the two years that the two spent studying together their relationship slid from professional to intensely personal. His family, while not thrilled with the thought of their union, had somewhat written Joran off as a confirmed bachelor. He rarely showed emotion and had never before been interested in a female, not ideal but acceptable for a younger son, and they'd expected him to spend his life in study. Raelynn's family could, admittedly half a dozen generations back, tie their family to a noble house, and she DID seem to make him happy.

It was her own personal fairytale ending. There was no denying the two were deeply in love and somehow perfectly suited to one another. Rae slipped into the role of mate and research assistant smoothly.

The Calamity was a time of terror and desolation for many, but for her it passed in almost blissful contentment. Though the weather in Corethas altered dramatically she had no problem being confined more indoors as a mere six months after Bahamut's rampage over Eorza she gave birth to a perfectly healthy son. Her bubble of happiness lasted for almost four years, only to be shattered by ill timing and poor architecture.

They were all supposed to be at Church, but her husband was keen to acquire another set of Sharlayan histories and he asked her to make his excuses to his family. Their son, though largely well behaved, did not always do well at long solemn events and they would spend the day together at the market.

The city was well accustomed to draconic attacks, the war had been raging for countless years, most everyone knew someone who had fallen to one of the dread beast's fearful breath attacks of wicked claws. But it was the sheer bulk of the creature falling from the sky which collapsed the building containing her small but precious family.

Raelynn refused to process the news. They had to be wrong, her men were simply delayed. It was a silly errand and they would return soon. She insisted upon that for days... weeks... months maybe? Time passed oddly for her, days would pass in what felt like a blink, and minutes stretched on endlessly as she watched snow swirl outside her window pane. Some were supportive of her grief, others, like her father in law said that it was Halone's will, some not so subtle hinting that if she and her husband were more devout that perhaps the tragedy could have been averted (the truth of that statement hurt far more than anything for had she insisted that Joran go to Church with her that day they would likely yet live).

Hollowed by guilt and grief she made no attempt to pick of the pieces of her old life. How could you put together something so thoroughly shattered and missing its corner stones? Instead fate intervened giving her the chance to run from it entirely. The gates of Ishgard would be opened, allowing in outsiders, the details of which she's still unclear on, something to do with the Dragon War no doubt. If foreigners could come in, why could she not leave? Away from the north and its cruel judgmental goddess, away from the memories which mocked the emptiness she floated in. She doesn't quite remember the entirety of the trip south to Ul'dah; a city picked largely because it was the first caravan she came across willing to take on travelers. Surely with her upbringing she could find her way in a city of merchants, but Rae did not entirely count on the flood of refugees already in the city or the fact that her diverse though not entirely useful skill set would be under, if not entirely devalued by a glut of people looking for work and shelter.

In an unfamiliar city, without friends or family to rely upon she found herself taking whatever odd jobs she could to survive, her moral compass fuzzing more with the growing hunger pangs in her stomach. Still she would make the same decision again. The people here understood loss and they didn't ask probing questions or want to talk about therapy and finding comfort in reflection of the divine.

Inhospitable and foreign yes, but hey, at least the dessert was warm.
