GENERAL INFORMATION

A former Ishgardian Temple Knight, Regner was stripped of his rank for defection and treason. Beholden to no master, the wandering knight now makes his living in the south as a sword for hire.
History
Regner was born in ishgard, the only son of an lowborn tailor. The elezen's childhood was simple enough, neither privileged nor deprived, but he always aspired to greater deeds than a merchant's craft. His father, supportive of the boy's knightly aspirations, paid for private lessons from a hyuran adventurer, who taught the boy the basics of swordplay. Years of lessons and practice paid off; at age 17, a string of hard fought victories in his third tournament earned Regner his chance to train as a squire with the temple knights. Six arduous years of training ensued, a mixture of martial lessons and formal education, before the elezen was fully inducted into the temple knights at 23.
For seven years he stalwartly served the Holy See, but nagging doubts began to take hold as time went on. Petty infighting amongst his nobler superiors, whispers of corruption and abuses of power disillusioned the knight, try as he might to turn a blind eye to the worst of it. The straw that broke the dhalmel's back came during a raid on a heretic encampment near the Dravanian borderlands. Regner was more than prepared to kill his fair share of armed apostates; he was wholly unprepared, however, to slaughter the unarmed women and children discovered as well. Fed up and disgusted, he finally took his stance, defying orders and turning his back on the order. But a knight who won't kill heretics is an apostate himself. A warrant was put out for his arrest.
In the face of death, an unlikely encounter set the elezen on a different path. On the road to the Witch's Drop, Regner's captors were set upon by by a woman clad in pitch dark mail. The elezen watched in shellshocked disbelief as she brutally cut the knights down with black magic and steel before freeing him. Impressed by his stubbornness and moved by his plight, the woman, known only as Eva, offered him a path to redemption and revenge through sword and soulcrystal.
Regner took it without a second thought.

APPEARANCE

Standing at six and a half fulms tall, Regner hardly stands out in a crowd. Years of martial combat have taken their toll on the knight: calluses and scars mar the knight's muscled body. Blond haired, blue eyed and in good physical shape, the knight might have been an attractive sight if his posture weren't so standoffish and dour.
It's rare to see Regner without some manner of armor of armor or weapon equipped: even when dressed in civilian attire, he keeps a simple longsword on hand at least. In the field, he typically wears a mixture of plate and padded armor, sacrificing some defense for more mobility. For more dangerous tasks... and for business in Ishgard, Regner dons a full set of heavy, plate armor, concealing himself entirely beneath the iconic, black gear.
Aspects That Stand Out:
A pitch dark soulstone hangs on a pendant chain from his neck, tucked under his armor and clothes at all times. He’s violently protective of it.
Ugly scars, three in total, mar the left side of his face. A memento from a wyvern attack.

PERSONALITY

You can take the knight out of Ishgard, but you can’t take the Ishgardian out of the knight. Regner carries himself with the trademark aloofness of his northern kinsmen. The elezen tends to keep to himself, rarely seeking out idle chatter. He can be coaxed out of his shell with enough incentive, and offers sharp wit and biting humor to most conversations. Ever the pessimist, Regner views all aspects of the world from a glass half-empty perspective. If he has a cold, it’s the flu; if there’s a cloud in the sky, surely it’ll rain. Better to be prepared for the worst than taken by surprise by it.

L I K E S

Chocobos. Regner loves these birds more than he loves most people. When he thinks nobody is looking he gushes over his steed. He does his best to restrain this urge in front of others. Most of the time it works.
Name. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Etiam pretium at magna nec volutpat. Ut et fermentum erat, a eleifend justo.

D I S L I K E S

Temple Knights and the Orthodox Church. Regner harbors a strong resentment of the church’s corruption since witnessing its abuses firsthand. He turned his back on the knighthood, but still feels ashamed for his complicity.
Beaches. Regner cannot swim. He burns easily under the sun. Sand gets everywhere. Why he is working in La Noscea is anyone’s guess.
Large Crowds. Regner is always guarded around strangers. Masses of strangers only make it worse. Too many eyes watching, too many ears listening. Better to avoid them entirely.

H O B B I E S

Reading. Surprisingly for a man-at-arms, Regner enjoys several mentally stimulating hobbies. He can often be found reading in his spare time, anything from fiction to chronologies, medical reports to arcane tomes.
Chess. A sharp mind is as important as a sharp blade. Regner is always willing to entertain a round of chess or other tactical games.

S T R E N G T H S

Martial Prowess. Years of military duty and mercenary work have given Regner plenty of time to master the martial arts. He is proficient with longswords and greatswords, but favors the latter whenever the situation allows it.
Dark Knight Conjury. Though rare to see him use it, the knight can channel his aether in both offensive spells and defensive shields. Both cause significant mental strain, however, and are best saved for emergencies only.

W E A K N E S S E S

Volatile temper. Regner keeps his temper in check to the best of his ability, but when something or someone gets under his skin it sets him off quickly. When agitated, the knight becomes biting and harsh at best, outright violent at worst. He does his best to let off steam without causing collateral damage, but he isn’t always successful.

M O T I V A T I O N S

Himself – It’s hard to say what Regner seeks these days. He has no apparent long term goals, nor any attachments to friends or allies. The only motivation he stoically abides by is his own code of honor: protect those who cannot protect themselves and never slay an unarmed foe. Everyone else, however, is fair game.

Relationships
Athulis Faulkner, - Acquaintance/employer.
Character's Thoughts: "Qute a quirky cat."
A fateful encounter in Eastern La Noscea landed Regner with an unexpected job offer. Though he now works for the miqo’te, he hardly knows anything about his employer. But then again, discretion is key in his usual line of work.
Merciful Blaze. - Sparring Partner. Deceased.
Character's Thoughts: "Don't speak of her."
Both Blaze and Regner were recruited by Athulis around the same time. The pair share a friendly -albeit it incredibly destructive- rivalry on the field of battle. Regner is absolutely giddy to have a sparing partner he can practice both sorcery and swordsmanship with, though Blaze's dominating demeanor can be... unsettling from time to time. Blaze is dead and gone, but Regner does not forget injustices wrought against him or his allies.
Percival de Rolo. - Compatriot
Character's Thoughts: "A fun brain to pick."
Percival has the honor of being the first nobleman Regner hasn't found completely grating. They haven't spoken much, but he seems to appreciate the hyur's wit.
Jean Lefavre. - Compatriot/Drinking Buddy
Character's Thoughts: "Have... have we met before?"
One day the two of them will be sober enough around each other to remember meeting.

RUMORS

N P C

Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!
"I hear he used to be a temple knight. Wonder what happened there." -Generic hyur.
◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
"Hells take the man! A knight who won’t slay heretics is no better than a heretic himself." -Irate Temple Knight
◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!
"The brigands took our sister. He promised to bring her back. We... we didn’t think he’d return her soaked in blood. Ada was unhurt, but... she cries whenever we try to ask her what happened..." -Skittish coerthan child
"Don’t speak to me of that monster. I SAW what he did to those knights. A man who fights with that kind of ferocity, with those kinds of magic is surely a heretic. Perhaps a demon. Maybe both." -Falcon’s Nest watchman.

Personal RP Limits
I’m pretty laid back on RP limits. I’m not in the least deterred by violence, torture, blood and guts and the like. Psychological traumas, sure? Physical traumas? No problem. Kick the shit out of my character for all I care. The only thing I as is that we talk things out beforehand if we’re gonna go down a deep, dark path. I do want to know and agree in advance before something horrible and irreversible happens. I love to suffer, but I don’t want to blindly wander into it.
I don’t want character death I only JUST made this character, got him to cap and glamoured him up. I don’t wanna put him 6 feet under so soon. If YOU have a death wish, that’s fine, I guess. But I’d like to stay an inch or two away from death at least.
I won't do ERP only plots. Buy me a drink first, jeez.

CHARACTER TIDBITS

Potential Plot Hooks
As a Temple Knight turned traitor, a suspected heretic and an accomplice to murder, Regner has earned himself an decent amount of notoriety in Ishgard. But a city like the Holy See is vast, and names and faces often blur together. You may know Regner (and the charges against him) if your character was a fellow Temple Knight, or are well-versed in city gossip. You may have a more positive recollection of Regner if you lived near or worked in the Jeweled Crozier; Regner’s family still maintains a tailoring shop there. Outside of Ishgard, Regner is a stranger in a strange land, an unknown face, but you might encounter Regner if:
If you have need of a man-at-arms. There are few jobs Regner will refuse, especially when they involve cracking skulls. Intimidation, protection, you name it.
If you frequent the Orchid 317 Hookah Bar (Mist Ward 12, Plot 40. OPENING SOON). Run by the soon-to-be spouse of his employer, the bar serves as the rendezvous place for Regner and his compatriots.”
If you’re in the mood for some bounty hunting. Regner hopped the border to escape the mark on his head, but that doesn’t mean he’s shaken everyone off his trail. (Message me OOCly in advance if you’re curious about this one).
Character Lore Adherence
I do my best to adhere to lore and not be too much of an edgelord; it’s a difficult line to walk with Dark Knights. I am fairly well-versed in lore, but I am by no means an expert on anything. I always appreciate advice. On the matter of Dark Knight lore itself, however, I have but one headcanon/explanation I indulge...
Darkside, Sigmund Freud, and You. Bear with me as I go on my armchair psychology ramble. According to Freud, the consciousness is split between three competing aspects: Id, Ego, and Super-Ego. The Id is primordial, base instinct, swirling chaos and violent impulse. The oldest aspect of man, the darkness that lies in everyone's hearts. It is staunchly opposed by the Super-Ego, morality and societal norm, the stark contrast to Id's feral nature. Between the two lies the Ego, one's sense of reason, which redirects and rationalizes Id's beastly urges, mediating between these opposing forces. To walk the path of a dark knight, to bear one's soulstone, is to tap into that feral, volatile nature to channel one's aether. But playing with fire is a dangerous thing; a dark knight who cannot reign in his monstrous nature, who drinks too deep or too long of that inner darkness, is surely doomed to lose himself to it.
