Rin Blackburne, born on the 5th Sun of the 5th Astral Moon during year 1554 of the 6th Astral Era, is a Lominsan Hyur working as an information broker in Hingashi for The Black Garden Co. In the past he was an up and coming Gladiator in Ul'dah as well as an assessor for Mealvaan's Gate in his home city of Limsa Lominsa. He is currently married to Enija Blackburne.

Basic Information

Appearance

As far as Hyur men go, Rin appears rather average and would blend in well in a crowd in any Eorzean city. He stands at 5 fulms and 8c ilms, and has neither a particularly slender nor heavy build. He prefers his dark brown hair short but is rather tardy with keeping it trimmed or tamed. He often appears a little tired, with subtle dark circles hanging below his narrow brown eyes. Eyes which, in his opinion, are framed quite well by his angular face.

Accessories

Save for his wedding ring and a modest ring awarded to him for being runner-up in a small gladiatorial tournament, as well as an old pair of reading glasses, Rin has lost much of his older belongings during his travels.

Current Dwelling

Rin recently moved to Hingashi, and resides in a small house in Shirogane housing district. Before moving, he spent most of his time wandering between Thanalan and the Black Shroud, living mostly on the streets or in inns when he and his wife could afford to.

Personality

Characteristics

Polite and respectful towards most, Rin is generally willing to blend into whatever setting he finds himself in, as he has found it grants him the easiest path to acheiving his goals. He regrets that he has a bit of a short fuse that often translates into sarcasm or vulgarity, though normally he is capable of keeping his feelings somewhat in check, especially when in the company of strangers, or anyone with whom he doesn't have close ties. He has a particular disdain for Lalafells, particularly the Dunesfolk though he isn't often interested in seeing a distinction. Because of his time spent in Ul'dah as an adult he considers them to be untrustworthy at best and nefariously exploitative at worst. While he is aware that not every single Lalafell are prone to scheming and greed and while he believes he is able to function without his prejudice intefering with his day-to-day behaviour or professional life, his angry outburts are occasionally laden with slurs and epithets directed towards no Lalafell in particular, but the race as a whole, on whom he has placed the guilt for crimes commited against him in the past. Despite all of this he feels a degree of affinity with the smallfolk he holds in such low regard, for their politicking and cunning fascinates him, as well as all other matters of state and business, though he is loathe to admit it. In fact, Rin has an interest in the city Ul'dah in general; the place is a centrepiece of his childhood, a mysterious and bustling city in a foreign country filled with strange people and stranger traditions. Despite growing up in Limsa Lominsa, he has come to view it as his home after spending much time there as an adult. He has a very hard time reconciling his opinions of Lalafells and his sentiments for a city filled with them, and often chooses not to think about it.

Strengths

Rin is rather intelligent and perceptive, able of both understanding small details while still perceiving the bigger picture of a given situation. His career with the Limsan port authorities left him with a lot of experience dealing with diverse people and handling complex and sometimes dangerous situations. This experience has lent to his diplomatic and social skills, and while he may speak ill of his time there, he was very well suited to the theoretical side of working at Mealvaan's Gate. He has also been known to put aside concern for his own personal safety in the interest of protecting those very close to him, going against what he considers to be his normally very calculating and careful nature. He can also throw a mean punch.

Weaknesses

His temper can render his intelligence and social skills moot, if only for short lengths of time, but his lack of self control in these situations can leave his standing and relationships with others shaken. In addition to this, Rin has an occasional tendency to throw his cleverness and caution to the wind and follow whatever arbitrary whims occupy his mind at the time. This has often led to larger problems, as he is unwilling to accept these mistakes and will try to justify it with a logical reason after the fact. In the past this has led to misconduct at work at Mealvaan's Gate, a brief stint of alcoholism in his late teenaged years, as well as leaving his job and travelling to Thanalan with his romantic interest, ending up homeless on the streets of Ul'dah for some time.

Religious Values

Although not an overly religious man, Rin still believes in the Twelve and has always had an interest in the beliefs and traditions of Nald'Thal worship. In the past this interest has remained more scholarly than anything else, however recently, he has taken to occasionally praying in private to Nald for his life to improve.

Combat

He has a penchant for swordplay, and this led to a brief period of small time success on the Bloodsands as a gladiator. He fought mostly in theatrical, never having killed until well after he left Ul'dah with Enija following a falling out with his benefactors. He has since learnt to use his skills for more practical uses when necessary, but has become a bit of a stranger to the blade after having been away from the Coliseum for so long.

Background

Family

Rin was born in the city of Limsa Lominsa, his mother was the daughter of a moderately wealthy and aging merchant from Ul'dah, who retired and moved with his daughter to the marine city so she could marry a fisherman native to the city who would become Rin's father. Rin is an only child, and has not had much contact with his parents since he left home with Enija, but has always had a good relationship with them.

History

Childhood and Adolescence

By the time Rin was old enough to remember his grandfather, the man was very old and sickly and much of the family fortune had been spent on caring for him, with frequent trips to his native Ul'dah to visit the city's physicians and the temple of Nald, Milvaneth Sacrarium. Rin spent many hours in the halls of the temple, while his parents assisted his grandfather perform prayers and traditional rites that Rin didn't understand much of at the time. At 10 years, he visited Ul'dah for the last time in his childhood, this time to lay his grandfather to rest at the Azzraneth Ossuary . Rin was sad that his grandfather was gone, and the hallowed halls of the temple of Thal scared him, but the mysterious men and women of the Ossuary who made up the Thaumaturges' Guild caught his interest. He never wanted to be a fisherman like his father, but the funerary rites and thaumaturgic rituals he saw during his grandfather's funeral inspired his imagination for most of his adolescence, but his family's lack of money by this time prevented any further trips to Ul'dah.

Arcanists' Guild

When Rin reached adulthood, he still held an interest in thaumaturgy and magic in general, but understood that the city of Ul'dah was beyond his reach, so he went to the Arcanists' Guild, figuring that perhaps the more mathematical and logical style of that particular form of magic may be better suited to his logical mind anyway. He trained to become an assessor, and for a few years oversaw many shipments of cargo, and while he had some interest in the processing of goods and people through Mealvaan's Gate into the city, he could never quite grasp the practical side of his job to a satisfactory degree, and ended up feeling a lot of resentment for his peers and his superiors. His feelings towards his position being what they were, when he caught an unwashed, scrawny girl named Enija rummaging through official papers and cargo, he saw fit to deal with the situation in his own way, rather than following official protocols. He ended up meeting with Enija many times over the following weeks, and eventually developed feelings for her.

Keeping his feelings to himself, they maintained a casual but close relationship for some time, until one day Enija came to him with a proposal. She knew that he hated his job and suggested that he travel with her to Ul'dah, revealing to him that she spent most of her time in the desert city and was due to return soon. Rin was against the idea at first, unwilling to leave the security of his job and home behind, but after some consideration and a few more close days with Enija, he made up his mind, left his world behind and set off for mainland Aldenard.

Relationships

Rin is married to Enija Blackburne, a scruffy little thief who has been a central part of his life since they met. The two are rarely seen apart and the two often playfully belittle one another, but when the situation calls for it they always have one another's back. Though Rin might often become exasperated at Enija's indiscriminate theft, he has come to see it as more of a necessity for the two to see through hard times.

Occupation

Both Rin and his partner are currently under the employment of The Black Garden Co. as information brokers and in accordance with their contract shall keep the details of their work private, thank you very much.

OOC

Though he is currently living in Hingashi with no realistic means of travelling back to Eorzea any time soon, he may be found on occasion in Ul'dah or anywhere else. You may assume this is a fever dream and act accordingly, either walk up or send a tell as long as the RP tag is on. Strictly no ERP! With you at least.
