Biography

A Blind Bastard

Rinnji was born thirteen years before the 7th Umbral Calamity to Lord Renee Larioux, Lord of the House Larioux, and his House's servant, the Duskwight Celie Beaumont. Despite being born a bastard and utterly blind from a defect in the womb, Rinnji was legitimized by her father as she was his first male-born child, after twelve trueborn daughters, from four different wives. Embarrassed by this, but unable to do much to sway her Lord husband, Renee's fifth, and childless, wife sent Celie away after only a few weeks with her child, and paid the young Rinnji little heed thereafter, except for contempt. Blind, different, and motherless, Rinnji's life might have been a tragic one; Yet she was still the would-be Lord of the ancient Ishgardian House Larioux, and despite these initial setbacks, grew up in a life of privilege compared to those all the way in the Brume. Tutors in music, speech, literature, all were given over to the young Lordling as she grew. While not affectionate toward her, she was Renee's one and only heir, and he being a man entering the twilight of his life, most certainly the last child he'd ever have, and so she wanted for nothing... At least, as far as an education was concerned.

Ser Derek the Bold

In spite of her setbacks, Rinnji grew into a willful child. Only after knowing the dark world of the blind, and ever the fearless youth, Rinnji would set out exploring House Larioux's castle grounds under cover of night. Though in truth, the guardsmen knew full well what she was doing and preferred to let her carry on with it, lest they restrict her and she work harder to elude their watchful eyes in the future. But despite these best intentions, one winter's eve, during the bitter chill of the 6th Umbral Moon, Rinnji slipped beyond the castle boundaries and into the blizzard which threatened to swallow all of Coerthas. Lost and suddenly struck with fear, Rinnji tried her best to find her way back to her home, but only wandered further. Realizing the heir was missing, the Guardsmen were sent out to find Rinnji with all haste. But it was not a guard who eventually found Rinnji, but an adolescent male unicorn. He brought Rinnji back within the castle walls, and prevented all from going near her. Even as she set warming up at a hearth indoors, the unicorn stood sentinel outside. Unicorns, powerful and magic creatures who are weary of boys and men, don't often come to the aid of any but young girls. Still thinking Rinnji as the male heir and Lordling, the Retainers of House Larioux were stunned by this showing of dedication from the young unicorn. It was decided, after trying their best to remove the unicorn from the castle grounds with no luck, that Rinnji would be allowed to keep him, provided she learned from the stablemaster on how to keep a beast a burden. She eagerly agreed. She named him Ser Derek the Bold, after a favorite story her nursemaid often told her. And since, ever has Ser Derek been her closest companion.

The Witchdoctor's Cure

On the 31st Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon, House Larioux's Guardsmen caught a Duskwight traveler on the outskirts of their lands. Accused of performing strange magicks, he was brought before Lord Renee Larioux for judgment. But Lord Renee Larioux decided not to give the Witchdoctor over to the Ishgardian Temple Knights when the traveler knew about his heir's blindness, the identity of the heir's mother, and claimed to have a way that the Lordling might finally see. Thinking the Witchdoctor meant a cure, Lord Larioux spared the traveler his life, under the condition that he remain within the castle grounds until his heir's condition had improved. Rinnji met Morassii the Witchdoctor the following day, and rather than fix her eyes so that she might see with them - something, he assured her, no magic could do - he instead began to instruct her in Geomancy, Conjurery, and the Language of the Elements. The truth was that Morassii was an order of secret Duskwight practitioners of White Magic. And through his instruction, and Rinnji's surprising magical aptitude (surprising to Rinnji that is - not Morassii), she could soon speak the elements and sense within them their aether. For three years, Morassii taught the teenaged Rinnji. When she began to present as a young Lady instead of a young Lord, he encouraged it. When she wanted to take a new name, he gifted her an ancient Duskwight one. When she wanted to take Ser Derek for a ride outside the castle grounds so he might stretch his legs, he covered for them both. Morassii was like a grandfather to her. Strict in some ways, but kindly, wise, and silly in most others. When finally Rinnji could use her mastery of aether and element to describe objects several rooms away after Morassii had rearranged their order, did he finally decide her training was complete. With his contract complete and a tearful goodbye, Morassii Beaumont made his way back into the wilds, leaving the 15 year old Rinnji alone in her castle once again. But now she was fuller and more whole than she had ever been.

Chalet Loup de Mer

At age 17, four years after the Calamity, and two after Morassii had left House Larioux, Rinnji had had enough of the expectations of Lordship thrust upon her since before she could speak. Over the years, she and her father had disagreed on much. And as she grew and was made to present as the future Lord Larioux more and more often, did Rinnji begin to resent the nobility and their smug, pliant voices, and gormless, self-important faces. The evening of her 17th Nameday celebration, she and her father had a spat on front of all the Lords and Ladies in attendance, when Rinnji publically rejected the name given to her by Lord Larioux, and told all of the name she had taken from Morassii. Lady Rinnji Larioux would be all she would respond to, from here on. But even after her public declaration and several blow ups with her Lord Father, Rinnji realized that there was no place for her here, in Coerthas, even as the Lady of House Larioux. Packing what she needed, she and Ser Derek road south for Ishgard.
