Rowan Sharpe is a Flame Lieutenant and former gladiator who resides in Ul'dah. She leads a small squadron of adventurers, and was actively involved in the Alliance campaign to liberate Gyr Abania from Garlean occupation.

After a difficult childhood in an Ala Mhigan refugee camp and lots of bad choices in her teenage years, she ended up fighting in the Bloodsands to repay debts incurred. Coliseum regulars might recognize her as a former gladiator, the leader of a winning trio in the years leading up to the Calamity. She was conscripted out of the gladiatorial ring by the Immortal Flames to fight in Cartenau Flats, and has served with the Grand Company ever since.

Physical Appearance

Rather tall and lean for a Midlander female, there is no mistaking Rowan for anything but a fighter. Her hair is short and bound up so it won't get in the way, and her attire rarely sacrifices function for the sake of form. Although she does not seem like the type to be swept up in the latest fashions, her attire is generally stylish enough and as clean as she can manage, which suggests she cares more about her looks than she might let on. She is never unarmed.

Biography

1552-1568

The Fall of Ala Mhigo
Rowan was born in Ala Mhigo, the product of a relationship between Ulic Sharpe, a Highlander who served in the Ala Mhigan military, and Ada Yarborough, a hot-tempered Midlander who followed the Fist of Rhalgr. The two had met during a joint expedition abroad, and found companionship in one another. Ulic already had a 2-year-old, Hunfrid, whose mother died during childbirth.
When King Theodorac declared himself the divine ruler of Ala Mhigo and outlawed the worship of Rhalgr, Ulic urged his lover to steer clear of the politics. However, Ada found it impossible to stay on the sidelines, and soon found herself at odds with Theodorac's forces. While she was not present when the King of Ruin purged the monkhood in 1556, she refused to go into hiding, and was slain by Theodorac's forces during the uprisings that eventually deposed the king. Stricken with grief over the loss of his lover, Ulic deserted and fled Ala Mhigo with his children, seeking a better life in Thanalan.
Life as a Refugee
Rowan grew up in one of the many refugee camps settled in the outskirts of Ul'dah. As a halfling, she was shorter and scrawnier than the Highlander majority who wound up relegated to the camps, but also lighter on her feet and uncannily agile. Inevitably, what set her apart became the subject of ridicule by other youths. Ulic started training her as soon as she was old enough to use a sword, so that she could defend herself and earn a living. "A man or woman with a strong sword arm never goes hungry," he often told her. Yet all around her were men and women, strong and able-bodied - and all in abject poverty, barely scraping. Her father's statements rang hollow, and as the years passed, they became more and more distant from one another, as Rowan's pessimism increasingly drove him to anger.
While Ulic had initially been determined to seek the aid of Ada's relatives in Ul'dah, his promises that their hardships would cease never materialized, and his increasingly impassioned letters never received a response. As weeks turned to months, and then to years, Ulic's disillusionment grew, and he came to resent his decision to leave Ala Mhigo. He took up drinking, and spent more and more of his time preaching to any who would listen about retaking Ala Mhigo within his lifetime to get their lives back on track. Rowan cared little for her old man's rambling, however, and preferred to figure out a way to improve her lot in life through her own actions, rather betting on grand aspirations.
Before long, she and Hunfrid, her brother, had begun running with two other youths and robbing travelers along a nearby trade route. Rowan was 16 years old.
