"It's a funny thing, losin' your memories. Like you just sort of appeared one day, out of thin air, and that's where you start. No past to reflect on or learn from. You just set your feet an' you go, an' hope that wherever they're takin' you is where you ought to be headin'. My feet brought me against the Garleans at Carteneau, and then they brought me here, on this grand adventure. Can't say I'm displeased with where they've taken me so far, but one's gotta wonder... where was I supposed to be goin', yeah?"

Appearance

Saber is an imposing Highlander woman of obvious desert birth, with her dark skin and raven black hair. Her eye is a furious crimson, while her other is missing, covered by an ornate dark red patch. She keeps her raven black hair messy and one long bunch of it falls over her shoulder. Her dark skin is dotted with even darker freckles, rare in desert-dwellers but belying her constant exposure to the desert sun.

She only wears her armored coat when out on a mission or adventure, preferring light fabrics between jobs when staying in her usual haunt, Ul'dah. On particularly bright days she'll wear a masked turban, but usually prefers her eyepatch, and enjoys clothing which exposes just enough of her toned body, of which she is particularly proud. Because of her desert living and adventurer's lifestyle, she's developed a keen nose for perfumes and fragrances which hide the unsightly odor of a warrior, and usually smells pleasantly of various native plants. Her voice is higher than one might expect for a woman of her size, and her laughter is loud and can carry across the entire room.

Her movement is what one might expect of a veteran swordsman, albeit ever so slightly off due to her lack of depth perception. She has learned to compensate but it is not as perfect as having two eyes would be. In combat she favors keeping her enemy on her left, as her right side is a massive blind spot, and in turn this has given rise to her penchant for greatswords - precision is not as vital when one mighty cleave reaches such a vast area.

History

Saber can only remember the past five years of her life. The last thing she remembers is waking up in the middle of the Battle of Carteneau, having a sword thrust in her hands and being pointed at the Garleans. For a spell afterwards she sought to regain her past but, finding no viable leads, settled on crafting a new identity for herself: the intrepid adventurer known only as Saber. With an optimistic attitude born of desperation for something to smile at and a massive greatsword capable of cutting through even the most formidable foes, she has spent the last five years adventuring all across Eorzea, earning coin, drinking in taverns, and enjoying the company of both male and female escorts.

Recently she was found by her long-lost older sister, Thira Diogenes, who told her of their childhood together in Ala Mhigo. Saber also learned her true name: Nalia Thorne, though she continues to prefer the name Saber. Armed with at least this knowledge, she has a renewed sense of hope and vigor, and has been even more chipper than usual.

Personality

Who Saber was once, she does not know, but she has decided that a positive outlook and chin held aloft are the best ways to overcome her disadvantages. To this end, she is unflinchingly optimistic, confident, and cheerful, never without an uplifting word, encouraging shout, or reassuring smile. She remains energetic at all times, and though her confidence can sometimes border on foolhardiness, she is self-aware enough to know when she's in over her head. She enjoys revelries of any sort, and is a connoisseur of many of Eorzea's fine ales and liquors. Without a life's worth of exposure to Eorzea's social paradigms to fall back on, she is fairly shameless, flippantly enjoying excess drink and Ul'dahn courtesans of both genders with little regard to her own dignity or grace. Having to re-learn much of the necessary skills and knowledge to lead a normal life in Eorzea has helped to sharpen her mind, helping her to learn new things much more quickly.

She continues to be all smiles even in combat, which can sometimes be unnerving to friend and foe alike, but she finds the thrill of battle to be equally as exhilarating as any other pleasure in life, and responds accordingly in her own fashion. Whooping and hollering as she dives headfirst into combat, her conduct is far from professional, even if her skills speak otherwise. Wielding her massive greatsword with ease, she efficiently cuts through bandit and beastman alike, though her missing eye puts her at a disadvantage that she compensates for with very little subtlety, often taking extra care in combat to keep her enemies on her left.

Other hobbies include prospecting as a second source of income, and continuing to re-acquire skills and knowledge lost with her amnesia.

  • Somewhat childish attitude leaves her at a disadvantage when it comes to more nuanced interactions such as politics or negotiations
  • The mixture of amnesia and her unflinching optimism has left her somewhat unguarded - she doesn't know if she made any enemies in her past life, and if so, who they might be or if they might come after her
  • Similarly, the above mixture also translates to a streak of naivete, hoping for the best in people while being simultaneously unfamiliar with which peoples or organizations in Eorzea are not to be trusted

Other Notes

Religion

Saber subscribes to the only deity that she has been introduced to since her "awakening" - Hydaelyn, the mother crystal.

Quirks

- Every so often, Saber's right hand will act on it's own, as if the absence of a right eye to supervise it has left it wild. This usually manifests in small ways - a twitch or roll of the wrist. - Saber awoke with, and continues to use, a distinct La Noscean accent despite the majority of her time being spent in Thanalan.

Equipment

Saber carries her greatsword, medicinal potions and salves, rations, field repair kits, extra clothing, and a small flask of liquor when out in the field. When home in Ul'dah, she carries only a flask and her coin purse.
