Linkshell: Pirates of a Wayward Star

Saefinn is a Miqo'te Pirate Captain who originated from Limsa Lominsa, he comes from a sailing background, but took to the life of crime at a young age and managed to stage a mutiny on his captain and ran his own operations for years before losing his crew in a fight to an army of Sahagin, with Saefinn being the only survivor. Saefinn was washed ashore and was discovered by a Lalafell called Lenunu Lenu, a Conjurer who nursed him back to health. Down on his luck, Saefinn was feeling sorry for himself, but Lenunu helped him keep a straight head. From here Saefinn basically had two choices, return to Limsa to sign up for the Arcanists guild or travel to Gridania and learn the ways of the Conjurer. This is where Saefinn starts for phase 4 of the beta. The story can be found here.

Appearance

He has black braided hair with silvery highlight and beads. He has a couple of tribal tattoo markings on his face and a scar from an attempted assassination. He is tall with a long tail with a tip at the end, he doesn't look very strong, but due to his slender frame is quite agile, which has helped him escape from sticky situations as he'd never hold his own in a fight.

Behavior

Saefinn has been shape by his career as a pirate. When he was a kid he loved to steal, play tricks on guards and vandalise, he would never hurt anybody. He kept getting into trouble, my to the dispair of his mother, he had not intention of 'saving' himself. Instead he decided to save his family from his shenanigans and joined a pirate crew as a young teenager. This is where Saefinn changed, he was sold into this idea of 'noble' pirates, sailing the seas with adventure, treasure and freedom. It was all a lie, it was a life of hardship and his captain worked his crew like slaves, except when it came to shore. Shore was a time of celebration, taverns and wenches. His captain at least rewarded loyalty. His captain was also a loan shark and there were cruelties Saefinn was expected to execute, but he learned to enjoy it. Those who did not pay up would tend to lose a limb. Saefinn could never fight, he never really picked it up and when he tried he often failed terribly, his captain tended to have him torture people, it was all he was good at. Saefinn learned to be wrathful. Despite this, he kept his sense of humour, if he didn't he would have easily gone insane. His best friend Roddy was a good laugh and helped him keep his spirits up through the hard times.

However, his nights spent in taverns meant he was all too familiar with tavern wenches. Getting drunk, forgetting the day and laying any whore who would come his way. This has warped his view of women, when encountering a 'lady' he would often be called a pig or slapped for speaking inappropriately, he has at least since learned how to behave himself when its needed. Still, get some rum down him and it's inevitable he'll talk about breasts.

Saefinn is also an avid reader. Time spent at sea often meant moments where he had a break from his duties and he would bury himself in a good book. Whilst he left education from a young age and despite his rebellious streak, he wasn't stupid. He inherited his mother's brain and his father's sailor tongue. In being one of the more educated crew members he in the end saw fault with his captain's money making methods and managed to stage a mutiny. Once Saefinn became captain, he no longer treated his crew like slaves, but built a business model where his crew was happy and he increased profits, so naturally he was loved. His crew no longer preyed on the weak, they no longer exploited the poor for money, he was a little more ambitious than that. He sought to take advantage of those who take advantage of others. The greedy merchant, the corrupt guard and the bullies for foremen. Saefinn charged what he called an "arsehole tax". His crew had the brawn to pull it off and always managed to stay out of the spotlight. Saefinn was a bit of an idealist, he wanted a crew to be made up of brothers and sisters and for his position as captain to mean something. He didn't like to bully those who didn't deserve it, hence his motive behind his arsehole tax. It was a suitable alternative to being a loan shark - he still carried on with his other crimes, smuggling and theft, but his victims changed.

Once losing his crew and being rescued by a Lalafell, he's developed a certain appreciation for life, he came to respect the selflessness of others more and this has motivated him to improve himself. He has no intention of ceasing being a scoundrel, but it has reminded him he has some honour and that maybe he can do more in his life that just run criminal operations.

In short, Saefinn can be wrathful, can be sweet, has a sense of honour, has a sense of humour, he respects honesty and kidness, he dislikes abuse of power and he is a chauvanist.

Combat

General

Saefinn fails in combat. He's not very strong. He has a good mind at least, this is why he's looking to develop his arcane abilities. His crew died due to a lack of an effective battle plan and he himself was never able to defend himself. Saefinn was able to win bar fights at least, not through his braun, but a combination of his agility and cheating. Sand in the eyes, bottle on head, kick in the balls, that's how he likes to fight.

Relationships

Family

The Liljasson name originates from Saefinn's grandfather. Saefinn's grandfather was originally called R'uhanu Tia, he was a member of a Miqo'te tribe, but left with a female called R'Lahta, they set course for Limsa Lominsa to find their own riches in a new life. However, it didn't work out as hope, they were penniless and living in poverty. However, one day a Roegadyn sailor took pity on them, a man by the name of Lilja, he was a captain of a prosperous Roegadyn crew. He gave R'uhanu work. Over the years the two would become excellent friends. Unfortunately, there was a fight between his crew and a rivalling group of sailors, which turned south when one sailor attempted to murder R'uhanu, but Lilja stepped in to defend him. The guards managed to break up the fight, but for Lilja, it was too late, he was dying by R'uhanu's side.

R'uhanu took over as captain and felt he should honour the man he owed everything too and considered himself to be a son of Lilja, hence he broke Miqo'te tradition by acquiring the name 'Liljasson'. R'uhanu and R'Lahta got married and had their own son, Steinn, who followed in his father footsteps as a sailor on his crew and eventually took over as captain. He met the wonderful, Rohsa, a fellow Miqo'te, who later become his wife. They had 2 children, Saefinn and Finnbjorn. Their family lived for many years with Roegadyn residing in Limsa Lominsa, little is known about the family's Miqo'te tribal connections, but Saefinn's grandfather didn't really talk about it, for him life started the moment Lilja took him under his wing and as far as he was concerned, he was family.

Friends

Prior to the Sahagin attack, Saefinn had a best friend called 'Roddy', who was a bit of a 'lad', so to speak. He was a bit simple, good hearted, loyal and was a terrible influence on Saefinn. Roddy was older than Saefinn and took care of him when he was a new recruit, but the two became very close. Once Saefinn was a captain, Roddy was his second-in-command. Saefinn was friends with just about everybody on his crew.

After the Sahagin attack, Saefinn had nobody to call friend, but he met a Lalafell conjurer, Lenunu Lenu, who saved him and helped him on his way, but they didn't really get to know each other too well, so 'friend' would be a strong word.

Enemies

If Saefinn's enemies knew who he was, he'd surely be dead. Most guards would execute him on the spot, but all those who witnessed Saefinn in the act were soon silenced. He knew how to conduct his business without ever becoming a suspect. As far as port authorities were concerned he was an honest businessman trading in honest goods.

Currently Saefinn only has one real enemy, the Sahagin. He seeks vengeance for the attack on his ship.

[edit]

Age 26

1) Saefinn hasn't updated this in a year, thus a years worth of stuff happened that may not appear in chronological order. Wonderful and adventurous deeds included many scuffles with the Garleans, a run in with The Black, a kerfuffle with the Fists of Rhalgr, an excellent smuggling deal with the Ishgardians of Whitebrim, only to find himself the pointy end of a lance and wounded. He ceased his contract finding a close companion kidnapped and in his rage to rescue her may have dealt a deal with a Voidsent and made enemy of many Ishgardians...not particularly smart. Other deeds include pissing off the Maelstrom, from finding himself blackmailed by a corrupt Maelstrom knight and later beating him at his own game and making allegiance with an idealistic Maelstrom crow, who has invested time and energy into Saefinn and his crew, because they stand for something 'good' though their methods often not and something they perhaps at times test. The Wayward Crew managed to set up shop with a safehouse and a business front in Ul'dah, under the protection of allies within Ul'dah's high society. Business was thriving and crew made friends and business with the neighbours. At least this was until their location was leaked to the Reavers (of whom, Saefinn owed a considerable amount of money to...on account of him raiding their hide out with his crew) and they attacked their safehouse and burned it to the ground, threatening the lives of the crew. This meant the crew was scattered, but there were those who sought to bring the crew back together and bring their captain back (again) from an alcoholic state and to lead the crew...not sober, but not drowning in sorrow. New adventures awaited, with the crew finally settling in Limsa with an estate. Things grew comfortable and new crew had joined the ranks - all sorts of odds and sods. Saefinn found himself more and more matured, well, still a drunken lout, but his days of boyish wenching were behind him and he had what felt like decades of life experiences, despite being a man of his twenties. He also found love. Things actually looked up for him - even through conflict and making enemies, including a rich elezen family in Gridania - but they were no match for his crew in the end. But in his comfort, Saefinn felt himself lazy and took it upon himself to stir up a little excitement in trying to reacquire his ship, which the Maelstrom seized after the attack in Ul'dah, they took advantage whilst Reavers had the crew scattered. He had also made the point of trying to strike fear in the corrupt, even going to the lengths of torturing a corrupt Maelstrom officer (who had dealings with the Reavers and sending good people to participate in the drowning) and delivering his corpse to the Reavers' doorstep.

And this is where the crew currently stands. A shortened history with probably a lot of stuff missing.

2) In wake of his "shit-stirring" with the Maelstrom, Saefinn has kept his head low, mainly because his Maelstrom Crow ally seized his ship with promise that he would let him have it back. Saefinn seeks to be on his best behaviour...at least in dealing with the Maelstrom. But in this time, there's more and more new faces among the crew and he seeks further adventure.
