History

Before the Calamity

Selwyn grew up in a decent sized home on the outskirts of Gridania. He lived with his parents(Christof and Juliana Stryke), younger siblings(Chelsea and Manton Stryke), and maternal grandparents (Govan and Donna O'Criadhen). He had a pretty normal childhood (or what one would call a normal in Eorzea) for the most part up until the events leading to the battle of Cartaneu/Fall of Dalamund. Selwyn always considered the things outside of his personal life to have nothing to do with him. No matter what stories he would hear about the Beast Tribes, Primals, or Garlean Empire, Selwyn cared little to nothing about them. To him those problems belonged to those who lived with those groups, and nothing more.

He thought that line of thinking was fine until the day his parents informed he and his siblings that they would be joining the Eorzean Alliance to help in an upcoming battle. It was no secret to anyone in their town that Juliana was considered a first class Bard or that Christof was a very powerful Warrior, but these things did not matter to Selwyn. To him these two powerful fighters were just his parents and they had nothing to do with this war. It bewildered him as to why they would risk their lives for people they knew nothing about. Selwyn felt as if his parents were abandoning he and his siblings and ended up lashing out at them.

However, instead of his parents getting angry his mother simply embraced him and assured him that they weren't abandoning them. Christof, Selwyn's father, simply laughed it off and told his son he was weaker than he thought and that when he was older he would understand. Selwyn's parents promised their children they would return and made Selwyn and his siblings promise to look after each other. The confused and bitter young teen agreed to the promise with tears and his eyes and patiently awaited the return of his parents. But they never came back...

After the Calamity

A few months after the Battle of Cartaneau, Selwyn had finally received word of the battle and the fall of Dalamund. Of course he had seen the meteors raining upon Eorzea that night but he didn't stay to watch it. His grandparents had he and his siblings hide in the basement of their home until everything was over. After he heard about the battle and the dragon the resulted in so many lost lives he just shut down. He locked himself in his room for three weeks until his grandfather dragged him out.

Govan, Selwyn's grandfather, berated his grandson for being so weak and told him to accept his parents' fate, but move on with his life. Selwyn snapped at his grandfather and questioned how could he move on from his parents' death and accused Govan of being heartless and uncaring at his own daughter's death. Govan rushed his grandson grabbing the boy's collar and threw him through the door of the house, breaking it into pieces. Selwyn in both shock and pain slowly stood himself up and attempted to attack his grandfather, which earned him a serious beating. Afterwards, Govan walked away and simply said "You're still a kid. It's time for you to grow up and understand your parents last words to you."

Selwyn out of embarrassment and anger ran into the woods until he couldn't run anymore. After contemplating to himself, alone in the woods Selwyn realized he was wrong for his words and actions towards his grandfather. Selwyn realized his own weakness and went to his grandfather to apologize and to request to become his student. Govan, a powerful Dragoon in his day, agreed and began to train his grandson for the next five years. It was during this time that Selwyn, 17 at the time, came across an announcement with the names and results of those who participated in the Battle of Cartaneau. Selwyn had to know had had become of his parents but when he got to their names both were listed as "MIA". Shocked and not knowing what to feel Selwyn through himself even more into his training. He vowed that day to find out what his parents' last words meant, what didn't he understand, and to find out what really become of them. He continued to train with his grandfather until the year 1577, when Selwyn became nineteen years old and decided to venture out on his own.

Personality

Selwyn had an easy going, carefree attitude. He has a hard time paying attention to anything he isn't interested in much rather spend his time talking to cute girls. He loves to fight strong people and always rushes head first into ever situation. He always seems to follow an "act first, think later" code, which can sometime get he and his friends in trouble. Though most of the time he is usually up beat and cheerful no matter the situation, when his friends' well-being is threatened, he becomes very serious and that is when his true strength shows.
