Character Name: Sena Varont

Nicknames, if any: none

Titles, if any: Baroness

Race & Subgroup: Miqo'te, Seeker of the Sun

Gender ID: Female (cis)

Orientation: Pansexual

Age: 27

Nameday: 32nd Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon (Oct. 31)

Residence: Serene Haven Inn - Lavender Beds, Ward 12, Plot 41

Free Company, if any: Wardens of the Haven «Haven»

Grand Company, if any: n/a

Height: 5'6"

Weight: Around 170-180 ponze, mostly muscle weight

Hair: Jet black, shoulder blade length

Eyes: Pale green, an unusual color

Skin: Light brown

Physique: The strong, dense muscles of the warrior are ordinarily hidden beneath a slight soft layer, making her ordinarily seem merely 'curvy-figured', but if she flexes or tenses the defining lines of the brawn beneath her soft skin become visible. Overall, she has a very toned appearance, regardless, with very little 'jiggle' in her step aside from her uncommonly ample bust, a rare trait for her race.

Other Appearance Details: Her eyes are ordinarily ringed by black eyeliner, which accents and emphasizes the unusual pale green color of her eyes, lending them an intense and nearly creepy appearance. Sena's face is often expressionless, seeming almost as if she's bored, moody, or perhaps irritated, and the dull, flat tone commonly carried by her squeaky voice doesn't help that impression. It's a good thing she doesn't play poker... or does she?

Morality / Alignment: Neutral Evil

Astrological Sign: Scorpio

Guardian Deity: Doesn't care.

Attitude: Generally, Sena's demeanor is even-tempered, though she is a fiercely independent and headstrong type who can quickly become disagreeable towards others who treat her poorly - but even when cross, she tends to seem almost disinterested, given her subdued expressiveness. Inwardly, she is a very passionate woman whose pursuits are ambitious, and has little use for those she considers weak, useless, or incompetent, nor does she care if they become aware that she has judged them thus. As she would say, if they don't like that opinion, they can change so her opinion changes.

Positive Traits: In addition to her tendency to be passionate (though externally conservative about showing it) about things that matter to her, Sena is very resourceful and cunning, with sharp and observant senses and a dynamic presence that seems, in spite of her lack of charisma, to draw others in. Those whom Sena chooses worthy will find her to be a loyal and protective friend.

Negative Traits: Her unyielding, no-negotiations nature can make her a challenge to deal with. In some respects, her observant nature can also be a negative quality, for she can seem suspicious of others, and her cunning combined with that can make her come across as manipulative (which she sometimes legitimately is). Towards those she chooses as her wards, or in whom she cares about, she can be obsessive and jealous, for they belong to her, as does anything she sees that she decides she wants.

Quirks: Aside from what has already been mentioned and may be considered quirky by some, Sena has various minor methods of expressing her dominance over others. Keep an eye out for them, they can be amusing!

Favored Traits in Others: Honesty, loyalty, and devotion towards Sena. She favors those who are obedient and eager-to-please without being pushovers or submissive due to personal ineptitude (since these people are weak). Rather, those whom she would consider to be close to her must themselves be strong and capable of self-determination and leadership of others, yet still recognize her as superior.

Disfavored Traits in Others: Although other races may have personalities, individual to individual, that Sena may find intriguing, she is less drawn to their physiques than she is to that of her own kind (though would not necessarily reject them on that basis alone). Waffling types can be irritating to Sena, who herself is very decisive. She also finds frustration in those who arbitrarily act out in defiance for the sake of trying to be 'forced' to submit to others, for this feels pointless to Sena - either a person wants to be a leader or they want to be a follower, requiring force is a waste of time.

In-Character Job: Leader of the Wardens of the Haven organization, owner of Serene Haven Inn and Farfanier's Freight, and the matriarch of the Varont Tribe of miqo'te. Her personal work in her past was primarily sellsword, bounty hunting, and bodyguarding, and she still takes contracts from time to time.

Professional Skills: Fighting. Lots and lots of fighting. Sena is also skilled at tracking, wilderness survival, climbing, swimming, and humanoid anatomy.

Amateur Skills / Hobbies: She's skilled enough at leatherwork and blacksmithing to maintain her own equipment, knows enough first aid to get by in the field, and is fairly talented at falling asleep where ever she darned well chooses (comfort be damned). Sena has dabbled in various hobbies over the years, but nothing stuck.

Goals / Wants: To crush her enemies, to see them driven before her, and to hear the lamentations of their women. That aside, she's also a fan of skillfully cooked meats and hearty foods such as popotos, favors drinking brandy, and lounging about when she isn't fighting.

Dislikes / Avoids: Excessive sweet foods (small and occasional amounts are okay), obviously attention-seeking clothing or mannerisms from others, liars, weaklings, cowards, and gender or sexuality driven insults.

Fashion Style: Gothic. Sena tends to wear black and gray clothing, occasionally accented by small amounts of white if it results in a pattern, such as her black and white striped stockings that she often wears. Her clothing is generally feminine, usually practical with very little flair. It's all high quality, but without being extravagant or flashy.

Light Armor: When traveling and not anticipating serious conflict, Sena wears a black leather cuirass with numerous pouches containing survival supplies in case she's somehow separated from her chocobo. Though lightweight, the armor provides adequate protection from basic natural hazards such as briars or nettles, and is reasonable defense in minor scuffles.

Heavy Armor: If she expects a fight of significance, Sena dons her armor - a suit of layered, bulky plate which provides her a juggernaut's defense at the expense of some mobility and, obviously, buoyancy. However, given the might of the armor, Sena doesn't exactly need to avoid attacks while wearing it. A foe would have to be very lucky or very skilled to penetrate it, and the latter type of opponent would likely be noticed early by the wary warrior and made a priority target.

Armaments: Unless her clothing would make it impossible (such as when wearing a bathing suit), Sena always carries a sharp dagger for defense and utility. That aside, although she's proficient in most types of weapons to varying levels of expertise, she doesn't have any standard weapons carried about on her day to day tasks, except for her battleaxe, Sever.

The magicked battleaxe, Sever: A fine specimen of artistic and masterful metalwork, Sever is a heavy-looking but lightweight battleaxe etched with runic script bearing warrior poetry and grim messages. It's all unreadable to Sena, of course. The edge of the axe's blade can be used for slashing or thrusting attacks given its clever design, and the recess along the back edge of the blade allows it to be used as an entangling or disarming tool during battle. With a fully metal construction, the haft makes an ideal parrying implement, and the butt end is well-balanced for bludgeoning strikes. As an enchanted weapon, Sever is impervious to common wear and minor damages which might otherwise occur from day to day use or standard exposure to natural elements. The actual effect of the enchantments upon Sever is that of supernatural sharpness, and indeed, when swung, the edge of the axe gleams as if shone upon by a light, the keen edge ready. Even if not apparently carrying Sever, Sena nearly always has the weapon close at hand, due to her ring Gaol.

The magicked ring, Gaol: Plain in appearance, the otherwise unassuming ring has a simple design of polished mythril woven into a 'Celtic' knot pattern. The simplicity belies its complex enchantment, however, for Gaol is imbued with the capability to store a single bound object - which may be of any type, organic or inorganic, inanimate or living - within an extradimensional space. The bound object can be summoned, and banished again to the pocket dimension, at the wearer's will. While thus magically imprisoned, the bound object is utterly lost from the effects of existence or the passage of time - it does not age or decay, and if living, requires no sustenance, air, or other such accommodations, nor could the living creature move, act, or think, except solely to have the basic perception of being imprisoned (but not for how long, given that time does not affect the extradimensional space). Ever the warrior, Sena has Gaol bound to Sever by default, so that her weapon is readily at hand when needed, even if she had otherwise seemed unarmed.

Kin Sena

Sena Varont: The matriarch of the Varont tribe. "Yeah, I'm pretty great."

Gustas Varont (Gus, "Ears"): Kin Sena's male. One of Sel and Callie's oldest friends, a warrior miqo'te who was adopted by a hyur family at a very young age. Chief of the Serene Haven Watch and a loyal guardian of the inn. Usually found nearby Sena or Celia, or socializing with the other watchers, during his free time. "Tough and strong but a real sweetheart. Real different from dealin' with somebody cocky like Ra. He's modest, and more capable than he realizes. He's been a real nice find, I gotta say. I'm glad he's stuck around and is bondin' with us."

Celia Varont ("Tall"): In spite of her general confidence, Celia is seen by Sena as vulnerable and inspires Sena to want to protect her. Though she'd originally begun her family with another and Celia was added later, it was Celia's profession of love to them which coaxed Sena into a lengthy contemplation of her own feelings. She had never loved anyone before, but Celia's tenderness helped Sena to emerge from her shell and recognize how she felt for her. They've been together for quite awhile now, and contentedly so. "Didn't reckon we'd end up like this when we met... I owe 'er a lot."

Kin Rivah

Rivah Varont: An unusual girl from mysterious origins, Sena finds Rivah fascinating, though not in the way of attraction. She seems to have odd talents and wisdom, in a shamanistic sense, and Sena is pleased that she wished to join her tribe. Pregnant by Bahk. "She's havin' some odd troubles due to her pregnancy, and I really hope this ain't gonna be Koli all over again. Worrisome. But she's settled in real nice, and seems to be takin' her role as kin matron more seriously. She'll be a good example to the others who'll come after her as more kins form."

Bahk Varont: Kin Rivah's male. Sena's older brother. Although he had initially scorned the idea of settling into a home after their many years of travel, and had protested Sena beginning to form a tribe, Bahk has since changed his mind. Sena considers him her most reliable and trusted ally, and is protective of him and the choices he makes for his life. "I'm real proud'a him for givin' this new life a chance. He's seemed ta be happy, once he decided to."

Naavu Varont: Bahk's daughter from Koli. Just a newborn little kit. "D'aww. I wanna bite her toes."

Roamers (not in any kin)

Taj Varont: Pursuing Kin Rivah. Clanking away, she can be found working on some smithing project or another, ready with a modest smile for her friends. She doesn't approve of her brother's wandering and wishes he'd make a home for himself. "I didn't know her well til she came to join my tribe, but she seemed real happy for the opportunity, and she's settled in with us about as perfect as anybody."

Sarah Varont: Pursuing Kin Rivah. A friendly, quirky blonde who at times reminds Sena of her barmaid Mitzy. Since moving into Serene Haven, Sarah has seemed to struggle to figure out what she'd like to do to make her keep, but the recent arrival of Bahk and Koli's kit has shown a motherly side to Sarah that Sena intends to put to good use by making Sarah the tribe's nanny. "A bit shy, but nice enough. She's seemed nervous around me, but we've been gettin' to know each other."

Lilah Varont: Dating Zephyr. In spite of her past, Sena accepted Lilah into her tribe along with her daughter Talia. She'd once been the companion of a rival of Sena's who has, since, mysteriously disappeared. Did Sena have something to do with that? Probably. "It's a bit challenging findin' just what her place is gonna be around my company, but as far as the tribe goes she's shown good skill with Talia, and I bet she'd make a fine teacher for the young of our tribe... once we've got some more."

Talia Varont: Lilah's little girl. Biologically mute, though she has a small magitek device she can use to create an artificial voice. "I don't spend much time with her, but she behaves and keeps outta trouble, so she's just fine by me."

L'koliwe Odh (Koli): One of the first to have joined Sena's tribe, and originally the matron of a kin which included Sena's brother Bahk. Midway through her pregnancy, she began having strange dreams, and disbanded her kin to migrate, for an unspecified time, to the Thaumaturgy guild in Ul'dah in order to learn of the things she'd dreamed about and come to an understanding of them. "Used'ta have more respect for her... I considered her a sister, but she got real distant a few weeks after gettin' pregnant, and I hardly saw her from then until she left."

On Trial (have asked to join the tribe but not yet been accepted)

J'sora Rossa (Sora, "Small"): Pursuing Kin Sena. A young blacksmith who lives at the nearby Glowfly Exchange. In spite of her timid and shy nature, she boldly managed to ask Sena on a date, and the two have been spending time together since then. She's recently been given the conditions for her trial to join the tribe, though the timing of the trial has yet to be established. "Dang, she sure is small. Sometimes I worry I'm gonna break the lil' thing! Heh. I like how eager she is to please everybody around my inn, though. Just a little ray of ginger sunshine, this one."

Zephyr Glide: Dating Lilah. A random sellsword who showed up at Serene Haven one day, having apparently met Lilah... somewhere. Sena doesn't really know, but it also doesn't really matter. He's seemed a stable member of the community, albeit a quiet and secluded one, making appearances nearly as infrequently as the hermitic Kihi. "He seems like an alright guy, and Lilah and Gus trust him. I'm gonna hafta get to know him better before I could figure out a proper trial for him to join the tribe, though. Guy needs to come around more, be more social. The place's Serene Haven, not Serene Hidin'."

Relationship Commitment -- Attraction -- Relative -- Friendly -- Indifferent -- Rivalry --Missing/Dead

Alexia Peregris: Dating Roku. A shady, wisecracking resident of Serene Haven who had once sought to join the Varont tribe and pursued Sena's interest, but the two butted heads over issues of respect and authority. Sena has since broken things off, and the friendship between the two is in a delicate - but stabilizing - place. "I'm not sure if I can trust her or not, after everything. I want to. But then again, what I really want is for her to knock off the snarky-ass veneer and just be the kind and thoughtful girl she always was when me'n her would be alone. If wishes were chocobos, right?"

Aiden Blood: Dating Shallan. Celia's adoptive sister, therefore related to Sena due to their relationship. Though they encounter each other often enough around Serene Haven, Sena still considers Aiden to be mysterious and relatively unknown to her. "She's a pretty busy one, and real independent. I don't know her that well, but I like her just the same."

Selarian Cloverbloom (Sel): Betrothed to Arietty. Talented in conjuration as well as non-magical medicine, Sel has his own clinic which Sena considers to be operating beneath the umbrella of the Wardens of the Haven. "He's got the bedside manner of a bedside table that's got protruding feet you're likely ta stub a toe on, but he's otherwise friendly enough and the best doctor I know. Helped Celia with a serious problem once, so he's got my loyalty."

Arietty Moonfall (Ari): Betrothed to Sel. A skilled scholar and teacher. Sena is protective over the little blind raen, and routinely attempts to look after her safety in spite of Ari's frequent moments in which she seems intent on putting herself at risk. "I can see why folks're drawn to her. She sometimes acts real young, though, and other times like an elder. It's like she can't decide if she's naive or wise..."

Kaori Rime: Dating X'elos. An engineer who works for Farfanier's Freight, one of the companies Sena owns. "I like her just fine. She might join my tribe one day, along with the fella she's in a relationship with. Can't say I'd mind that a bit, they both seem like good folk."

Pinny Aerani: The most shy of conjurers, apparently, but good at her trade and has a thirst for adventure. "She's about as stoic as I am, heh. I dunno if she likes me or merely tolerates me, but I think she's a good sort."

Jasmine Palladino (Jas): Possibly as stout a warrior as Sena herself, or maybe moreso - the two have never tested, nor do they feel the need to. It's better to just agree they're both awesome warriors! She has an odd manner of speaking, but generally communicates well in spite of it. "She needs a male t'join her little tribe and help her raise her siblings and cousins. I should look for one for her..."

Amaryllis Palladino (Ryll): Jasmine's younger sister, feisty and testing her boundaries. "She's been real busy learnin' and studyin' lately. Wonder if she'll be a warrior like Jasmine, or go off ta learn magic or something."

Roku Lyehga: Dating Nai and Alexia. Tough and sassy, but a kind person who looks after her friends. Works for the Serene Haven Watch. "I haven't gotten ta know her well, and she seems t'spend most of her time with just Nai. I'll probly get t'know her better if I take on some more mercenary work."

Kihi'an Bahjiri (Kihi): Dating Sehk. One of the smarter and more learned individuals residing at Serene Haven, and an old friend of Ari. Works for Serene Haven Inn as an administrator and bookkeeper. "He's a pretty cute male, though not real assertive... and very shy, I guess? I don't see much of him, I suppose he's off readin' in his room or the library."

R'tehz Tia: A strange man who is part chef, part knight - a combination which baffles Sena, but is oddly amusing. "One'a the more eccentric people I know, though I don't think he means t'be. Sometimes he annoys me, but his weirdness can be funny. Heh."

X'elos Nunh: Dating Kaori. A warrior of some sort with a very respectful and polite manner. Has a kit, from a prior relationship. Sena's discussed her tribe with him, since X'elos doesn't really have a tribe in spite of his Nunh title, but he's disinterested in joining any tribe. "He seems alright. Real attentive to Kaori, doesn't boss her around or whatever. Good qualities in a male."

Alexander Afroni Alfonso (Alfie): An unusual hyur with a giant afro hairstyle who arrived at Serene Haven and was quickly employed by the watch. He's seemed to behave respectfully and does well at his work. "How's he even get a helmet on? I can't figure it out, but somehow he manages."

Calliope Cloverbloom (Callie): Who knows what exactly the diminutive younger sister of Sel does with her time, but she's sociable and seems kind, and claims she spends her days doing good for others. "I'm pretty sure she's actually made outta wind and shadows. Y'see her around a little while, and then you don't anymore."

Li'naidjaa Thish (Nai): Dating Roku. An expert when it comes to machinery of all sorts. Used to work for Serene Haven, but was released from employment due to the scheduling demands of her tribe. "I wish she and Roku had joined my tribe instead'a the one they did... I don't feel like we saw Nai around the inn very much, and now that she ain't workin' for me anymore, she's become a stranger."

Miyu Feyi: An unusual young miqo'te who seems to have an affinity for magic and a desire to combat voidsent. Worrisome to Sena, who had initially found her attractive - but an invitation to a picnic got a non-committal response, and Miyu later acted as if she could hardly remember Sena's name. Owch. "Hope the young thing don't get in over her head with them dark forces she's learnin' to battle."

Q'sehk Tia (Sehk): Dating Kihi. Otherwise unknown to Sena, who's only met him sparingly. "Guy seems alright, though like Kihi he sure seems to like his seclusion."

Shallan Daver: Dating Aiden. Mostly a mystery to Sena, since she's only met Shallan a couple times. "I guess she's okay. I keep thinkin' her name is Shallot, but I know that ain't correct."

Tsuru Wakashibana: Arietty's retainer, from Doma. She speaks only Doman, and has thus never held an actual conversation with Sena. "Guess I can't say much about her, other than that she stays outta trouble and I respect her attention to duty to Ari."

Y'esthine Dhan (Essy): A young miqo'te who traveled from Ishgard to see where Gustas was going when he left the area. When she heard Serene Haven Inn, his destination, was building a bath house, she invested her traveling funds to become its partial owner and manager. "She's real shy and sweet, just seems to wanna make people happy."

Yvenalise Tachibana: The owner of a trading company located not far from Serene Haven Inn. "Met her recently, she seems alright. Probly get ta know her better through business and such."

Sen Meiken: The owner of the Glowfly Exchange, located not far from Serene Haven Inn. "She's friends with Yvenalise, I met 'em both at the same time. Kinda cute, for an au'ra. Heh. Her folks're gonna build the cell for the Watch Office."

Arossia Laisonne (Rose): Dating Talaryn and Seina. She used to date Sora, prior to Sora pursuing Sena's tribe. A tall and strong woman who works for the Glowfly Exchange, Sena considers her an interesting hyur parallel to herself, since the two have some superficial similarities. "I don't really know much about her, but she seems like she's got a level head on her shoulders. Didn't do nothin' crazy when everything changed for Sora, and I respect her for that."

Talaryn Qalli: Dating Rose and Seina. Sena doesn't know her well. "Seems nice enough. We'll probly get ta know each other better in time."

Seina Horo: Dating Rose and Talaryn. Sena doesn't know her well. "Good enough girl, don't mind bein' around her. Hope folks can keep our names straight."

Cassandra Solidor (Cass): A mercenary who met and bonded with Sena over their mutual work. She can be elusive and irregular in her appearances. Their friendship has deteriorated due to an incident between Alexia and Cass shortly after Sena broke up with Alexia. "We got words ta have, next time she's randomly around..."

The tribe which dug their own graves

Born to a sect of the Mole Tribe in Thanalan to the strong talented huntress O'thanna Tohst, and sired by the young and popular O'rhen Nunh, the early years of the kit O'sena Rhen were spent as were common for girls in traditional tribes who had any interest and aptitude for the hunt - hunting, of course! Before she was big enough to be of actual use in training to hunt, she was already learning how to maintain equipment, how to set up and break down camps, process hunted game, follow tracks, and other studious requirements of what would one day need to be second nature to her.

By the time she'd reached her tenth nameday, though, matters in the tribe had long been slipping down a tyrannical slope. O'rhen had handily beaten his challengers over the years, at first by his own skill and guile, but later due to unorthodox methods. His former challengers would be coerced into working for him as a Tia group referred to as "The Posse", whose purpose was to safeguard the position of O'rhen as Nunh for the tribe... by any means necessary. Usually, this meant observing any other males in the tribe and carefully watching their training, and any who seemed like a contender to challenge O'rhen would be discreetly - but not really all that discreetly - bullied into giving up their effort and joining the posse, or, leaving the tribe in exile (or worse). The huntress elders found themselves powerless to stop O'rhen's plan, because the laws of the tribe forbade females from harming the valuable males - and thus power and authority in the tribe left the huntress elders and fell to O'rhen and his posse.

In trade for their loyalty, O'rhen afforded loyal Tia special privileges, including the rights to the best food and the best shelters the tribe had to offer, and the companionship of girls who had displeased O'rhen or whom he simply didn't favor. Any girls who'd protest being told to go with one of his posse would be shunned, given no opportunities to have children at all and given the poorest shelters and the most meager food. It was made clear that in order to lead an ordinary life without punishments, everyone had to do as O'rhen decreed.

After training in secret to avoid observation, sixteen year old O'bahk Tia, the elder brother of O'sena Rhen from the same mother, surprised the tribe by suddenly challenging O'rhen while the Nunh had been boasting during a breakfast feast attended by O'thanna and her children (among others). O'rhen didn't know it, but the young Tia had been quietly studying the elder's techniques, and had focused his own training solely on the defeat of the tyrant Nunh. As planned, during the subsequent duel O'rhen was countered deftly at every effort, but as he lay battered on the ground awaiting his end, O'bahk stood with a foot on O'rhen's sternum and declared to all onlookers that he forfeited. He didn't wish to be Nunh, and merely wished to prove a point to the tribe that O'rhen wasn't undefeatable, and he could be ousted if there were enough Tia brave enough to challenge him.

The tribe fell into an uproar over the situation, and O'bahk wisely withdrew and went into hiding to wait for things to calm down. O'thanna went with O'rhen, whom she adored - for although he had changed over the years, he was once a brave and good man, and had always treated his most loyal females with praise and favor, a position O'thanna had enjoyed throughout her life. Alone, twelve year old O'sena went to fish and clear her mind of the day's events, and returned home later to clean and ready her catch for her mother to cook for their family's supper. While working at the fish outside her family's home, a healed O'rhen and his posse arrived in search of O'bahk, who had yet to return. O'thanna was at a meeting of the tribal elders, though she was herself not among them, merely a leader among the huntresses and thus desired at the elders' meetings. With the hope of punishing O'bahk for his insolent behavior, and perhaps luring him to come save his little sister, O'rhen instructed his posse to seize O'sena and take her to his stronghold, where she would be passed around his men (but not O'rhen himself, given that he was her father) for their entertainment. But it wasn't meant to be, for as O'rhen was laughing to his men about his command, young O'sena plunged her filleting knife into the Nunh's back and slid it up to his ribs and outward, the swift motion gutting him like an catfish.

Shocked and uncertain at what to do, the posse beat and disarmed O'sena and dragged her to the tribe's holding cell so they could deal with the body of O'rhen and consult the council. Though the posse had authority and power under O'rhen, none of the Tias involved were certain it would be maintained until it could be established who would succeed as Nunh. Surely it must be young O'bahk, by custom, but already the Tias of the posse were scheming who would defeat their new O'bahk Nunh and take power for himself, and deals were being made among the Tias regarding who would serve whom if they won the role.

Darkness fell, and with the posse gone aside from one whom they had left to watch the cell, the faint whip of an arrow whispered in the air. The guard Tia dropped, gurgling, having been shot through the throat - and O'bahk emerged from nearby to pick the lock and release O'sena. He'd overheard the elders, and their intention to force him to become Nunh - and likely be killed by one of the Tias vying for power - and execute O'sena, for females weren't permitted to harm males by tribal law. The pair hastened to their home to ready some supplies to they could flee the tribe for the safety of their own lives.

Just as they were about to leave, the door opened - and into their home stepped O'thanna, unaware that her children were within. Furious at what had happened, she began to yell at her son for what he had begun within the tribe, and blamed him for the fate which would befall the two young miqo'te. She had every intention of leaving the home to alert the others and have O'bahk and O'sena apprehended, but the young male stalled his mother, attempting to calm her and get her to see reason - but there was nothing for it, for she had loved O'rhen and scorned her son for his behavior, caring little that it was truly for the best that it had happened to the tribe.

Subtly, O'bahk flicked a gil from a nearby basket to O'sena while conversing with their mother, a cue to his little sister. It had long been a tradition between them that when O'bahk had some chore or task which needed to be done but he couldn't or wouldn't do, he'd pay O'sena a gil to do it for him, teaching his young sister the value of work and money from her earliest years. There wasn't any way out of this situation. If O'thanna left the building, they'd have more huntresses chasing them than they could evade, and if they stayed put they'd be captured just the same. Only one solution existed which would preserve their lives, and O'bahk couldn't, for it was he who had their mother's attention upon him. She never saw the heavy iron pan coming when it struck the back of her head, and was probably unconscious already when O'sena delivered the second and third blow.

Cold-eyed, both from shock and determination to survive, the girl was dragged by her brother's hand out of their home and into the night. They didn't even pause for their supplies, there simply wasn't time. All they had was the clothes on their backs, the skills learned in their youth, and one tarnished coin clutched in the tension-slick hand of young O'sena.
