History:
Early Life
Ohki'to Ekners was born to a community of three families. Out of the women in his community, his mother was the youngest. Ohki'to was the youngest in his community, regardless of gender, and the closest person to his age was a female named Lahtan. Ohki'to rarely spoke growing up, and his only friend was Lahtan. Lahtan was brave, curious, and explorative. Ohki'to would often stick by her side whenever possible, preffering to have her speak for him. They would often wonder out into the shroud when no one was watching, and were consistently getting into trouble.
Ohki Ekners would often tell Ohki'to that the people of Gridania were not to be trusted and warned him against getting to close to the Wood Wailers, but Lahtan would regale him with stories of the adventurer's of the city. She told him about the pirates of Limsa, the fighters of Ul'dah, and the knights of Ishgard. Ohki'to didn't know where Lahtan learned about all of this, but he loved the story of the knights of Ishgard. When no one was around, Lahtan and Ohki'to would often pretend to be knights and would go on imaginary quests to dispense justice.
On one such quest, the pair had wondered deep into the east shroud when they stumbled upon a group of Wood Wailers. They quickly hid from sight, but Lahtan wanted to watch them to see what they were doing. She was fascinated by them, and Ohki'to was terrified. They were, unfortunetly, soon discovered by the Wood Wailers and accused of spying on behalf of poachers. In a rare moment of courage, Ohki'to attempted to defend Lahtan and accidently called forth a carbuncle. The carbuncle poised itself to attack, but dispersed in a puff when a nearby adventurer knocked the pair of children unconcious.
The adventurer was a Hyur named Jeffers who happened to be doing work in Gridania and assisting the Wood Wailers at the time. Once Ohki'to and Lahtan awoke, he gained there trust and discovered that they were mostly harmless. Jeffers displayed concern for the magic that dwelled within Ohki'to and offered to teach him to control it. For the next couple of years, Ohki'to would study under Jeffers tutelage while his parents slumbered. He excelled at calling out his carbuncle, but struggled with traditional Arcanist spells. One day, he found that Jeffers had left the Shroud to return to Limsa Lominsa. He returned to his community only to tell Lahtan that he was leaving, and then left home to find his way to Limsa.
Teen Life & The Journey
Ohki'to didn't make it far before discovering that Lahtan had followed him, but she refused to go home. After much arguing, he finally gave in and the two set off. They would often find shelter to hide in where they could sleep during the day, and then travel at night. However, it became clear eventually that they were lost. They found a small town deep within the Shroud and decided to risk entering it. They were met with little fanfare, as the people largely ignored the two. It took them twelve tries to find someone who had a map of Eorzea that they were willing to part with. With the map in hand, they set about their journey once more. After a few months of travel, they were getting close.
They had made it as far as Easter La Noscea before they decided to stop at another town. They didn't know what to expect when they found Limsa, and they were getting tired. While in town, a Roegadyn that appeared to be much older than them offered them a ride on his Caravan. He told them the time and place for departure, and they quickly set about getting a final round of supplies. They split up in order to get everything they needed, and the sun had gone down by the time to meet back up had come. Ohki'to arrived at the meeting point for the caravan, but there was no caravan in sight. There were no people and especially no Lahtan. He sat on a nearby rock and waited for an hour before he heard a faint sound in a bush nearby. He crept up to it, and inside the bush was Lahtan's mangled body. She was bleeding from several wounds, and all of her possessions were gone.
Ohki'to carried her back to the town, stricken with grief, rage, and fear. The people took her body from him and took him to a nearby Inn. Ohki'to stayed at the Inn for many months without so much as leaving his room. Without Lahtan, he didn't even know how to take care of himself. After a few months, he began to work odd jobs at the Inn to help pay for food and board. It wasn't until a year had passed that he heard the name that motivated him to continue. Briarden. A passing Elezen told him that Detective Briarden was the finest detective in the land, and that he was in Limsa. Ohki'to felt a purpose growing in his heart like never before, and rented a Caravan to Limsa Lominsa.
