Personality

As intelligent as she is diligent, Sera'leina feels it is her duty to take the knowledge she gains to use it to help the people and wild life of Eorzea. She is very scholarly. She loves to read and learn new things, and she has made it her goal to learn everything that she can.
Normaly she is introverted, usually preferring to stay in the background and study her surroundings in order to be able to gather information and react, as opposed to act and stand out. Although she is a friendly person, she usually seems distant and quiet, and people often mistake this as her being rude or uninterested.

Morals and Beliefs
Sera hates pointless violence and hate, which there is too much of in the world. She finds it ironic, though, that usually violence is the only way to counteract pointless violence. She hates animal abuse and finds it disgusting. She refuses to eat rabbits.
She is a very down-to-earth realist. She doesn't believe in destiny, and she believes that the supernatural and divine have more scientific explanations behind them that we are aware of. This doesn't mean she doesn't believe in them like most people assume, however.

Likes

  • Books, reading and learning. If she isn't learning something new, she gets restless. The world is full of information, and she wants it all!
  • Small animals, especially rabbits. As a child, the only friends she made were the little critters outside of her parents' mansion. She likes their cute ears and the way their noses twitch.
  • Botany and alchemy. Apart from arcanum, Sera has taken a liking to the more natural sciences of the world. Nature has always fascinated her, and the more she can study and learn from it, the better.
  • Swimming. Due to her strict upbringing, she was never allowed anywhere near the ocean - or anywhere away from Gridania for that matter. When she first came to Limsa Lominsa to further study arcanum, she found that she loved the ocean and spent most of her time on the beach reading. Also, the little fishes are adorable!
  • Art. She is fascinated at art's ability to say so much without saying anything at all.
  • Tall trees.
  • Climbing tall trees.

Dislikes

  • Politics. Her father had forced this study on her from a very early age. With the exciting discovery of things that actually interest her, like arcanum, along with her obsessive father and the way his politics had taken control of his life, she had grown to despise both politics and politicians alike.
  • Animal Abuse.
  • Rabbit food jokes. People who know her usually tease her for being so adamant about not eating rabbits.
  • Sharks. Sera loves all animals, but sharks are just creepy.
  • Turnips.
  • The desert.
  • Annoying and loud people - mainly men who won't leave her alone. Shes trying to read!

Goals

Sera'leina wants to learn as much as she possibly can. She wants to be able to help everyone and everything in need, and she plans to do this through her knowledge. She also wants to travel. The world is too small and there is too much to see and learn from it.

History

Political Upbringings
Sera'leina was born to her mother, Nii'sha, in Ul'dah, who was a representative for the Ul'dan government. Shortly after Sera's birth, Nii'sha married and moved into a wealthy and prestigious elezen family in Gridania. Her husband, and Sera's newly adopted father, Dariss Lavelle, was a political advisor for Gridania. They had met each other during a political meeting in Ul'dah while Nii'sha was still pregnant with Sera'leina.
Although Dariss wanted a son, he made due with Sera. At an early age, Dariss began to push Sera to study and learn. Starting with homeschooling, his goal was to eventually bring Sera'leina into his political work. Over the years Sera's schooling consisted mainly of subjects involved in politics. He had made it his goal to keep her away from anything that could potentially side track Sera from his goals. Dariss had made Sera's life as secluded as possible throughout her childhood.
Sera was a smart kid. She was diligent in her studies and scored exceptionally in all aspects of her schooling throughout her childhood.

Friends
Sera's father had a large library of books that she would sneak outside and read. Over the years, the forced study of politics became more and more unbearable.
Sera spent her free time outside in her parents' gardens reading and studying her own interests. She found a spot away from the mansion, through a thin path in the trees which led to a secluded stone bench where she could relax and read the books she borrowed.
Due to Dariss' strict parenting, she rarely had interaction with other children. She made friends in the small critters that would visit the gardens. When she wasn't studying or reading books, she liked to watch the animals and study the plant life in the area. It quickly became a hobby of hers, and she spent a lot of time doing it.
The more time she spent observing the wild life, the more she learned and understood it. She found the rabbits particularly intriguing. They were shy and scared creatures, but Sera could always sense that their more social side. She understood their fear of larger creatures, such as herself, but wanted to earn their trust - and over time she did. She had befriended many of the critters that lived in the gardens, and they were the only things in Sera's life that she considered her friends.

The Discovery of Arcanum
Around the age of twelve, Sera'leina had became interested in Alchemy. Unfortunately, due to Dariss' wishes to keep such subjects out of her homeschooling, it had just briefly touched on the subject. Sera was determined to learn more. She snuck into her father's library while he was away, as she often did, and began to search for books on alchemy so she could study it herself.
Mistaking an arcanum book for alchemy, she quickly grabbed it off of the shelf and ran outside through the gardens to the secluded stone bench where she read. The book wasn't a grimoire, it was more of an informative book on the subject, touching on arcanum's history, uses, and applications. One page in particular caught Sera's eyes. It was a page on a cute little creature known as Carbuncle. Along with her love for the little critters of the gardens, was this discovery that peaked her interest in arcanum.

The Beginnings of an Arcanist
Although Sera's father would have been furious over the discovery of his daughter's interest in arcanum, Nii'sha understood her daughter's interest. She always wanted Sera to grow into her own self, away from Dariss' plans he had made for her for his own gains.
It was Sera'leina's thirteenth birthday, and her homeschooling had just gotten over. She walked outside to her usual spot and came across a leather-bound grimoire waiting for her on the stone bench. Although Sera didn't yet know it, her mother had just kick started her life as an Arcanist. Sera never figured out where the grimoire came from.
Every day after school got over, Sera ran outside to practice her arcanum. Among the list of spells was the little rabbit-like creature that she had seen in the book from her father's library - Carbuncle. Without certain gemstone, Sera was unable to summon the creature though, but she had many other spells to practice. She continued to practice from the grimoire over the next couple years. It was her goal to master everything she could, and she did.
As Sera got older, Dariss began to ease up on his restrictions. He understood that for her to be an important societal figure, she would need interaction. She was still doing exceptionally in school, and Dariss, still unaware of Sera's independent studies, believed that she was on track to join him as an apprentice in his political affairs as soon as she finished school.
Sera was seventeen years old when she discovered the red gemstone at the local market in Gridania. A traveling merchant who was offering rare items was in town, and the gem stone was among his inventory. Sera ran home and swiped a sack full of gil from her father's office and bought the red gemstone.
Sera recognized it instantly. It was the only thing missing from the one spell that she had left to master from her grimoire. It was the stone she needed to summon Carbuncle.

Self-Awareness
Over the next five years, Sera kept Carbuncle a secret from everyone else. She didn't want Dariss to find out about her interest in arcanum in fear that he would take the gemstone and her grimoire. School ended when she was 19, and she began her political career under her father's mentorship. She spent her free time at the Botanists' Guild, learning what she could about botany, or in the woods with Carbuncle practicing her arcanum.
The longer she worked with her father, the more she began to despise him for his obsession in politics and money. It had consumed his life, and if it were up to him, Sera'leina would follow. With the battle of Careneau and with the Garlean Empire a threat to Eorzea, Sera began to realize what she really wanted to do. The more she learned, the more she realized that she knew nothing. She wanted to improve her knowledge to help those who needed it. She made it her goal to learn everything she could possibly know in order to do so.
At age 23 she decided she had enough of her father's politics and left her home in Gridania for Limsa Lominsa and the Arcanists' Guild to begin her own life. She wasn't going to sit in an office and pretend to be helping people anymore. She decided to take charge and make a real difference, starting with improving her knowledge of arcanum.
