He can be frequently found in a local watering hole having a drink or any place where he can distract himself with good conversation.

Appearance & Personality

Appearance

Uncommonly short for an Au Ra, he only stands at a meager 6'5. He is of a lean build with wiry muscles taut from intense training and active combat. He has long almost lanky limbs for his frame, both legs and arms seem almost too long for his body, giving him excellent reach and long gait. He is aware of his awkward build and subconsciously tries to hold himself in a way that minimizes how noticeable it is. His golden straw hair is always tied back into a loose ponytail with his parted bangs framing his sea green eyes.

Personality

Always wearing a grin and ready to make light of the situation, Stahl finds his defense in humor and compromise. Despite his usually sarcastic laid back attitude, deep down he is a people pleaser and typically targets his jokes and teasing jests in a way that relaxes the atmosphere or lowers the guard of whomever he is engaging with in banter. Most are taken aback when Stahl actually does become serious when the situation calls for it. He typically gives way in arguments or quiets when someone talks over him... until he needs to be heard. That shock and addled reaction is what he feeds off of. His joy in life is in the reactions of other people. This same mantra follows him in battle where he plays the inept jester until he sees the perfect opening and his entire persona shifts. This behavior on the battlefield earned him the call-sign "Faux-Schlemiel" during his time in the Imperial military.

Biography

Childhood and Youth

Born as "Kenji" on the outskirts of Doma to a father who taught swordsmanship; Stahl was the downtrodden runt of the litter. As his brothers were taught the sword, Stahl was made to do housework and perform hard labor. His older siblings looked down upon him and regularly practiced their sword training on him leaving him beaten and bloodied. He always stayed his hand until the one day he decided not to. Taking those countless blows from his brothers, he knew exactly how they would swing their sword and just where their failings were. Without mercy his beat them bare handed, his body toughened from the constant beatings and hard labor. A passing Legatus witnessed the boy single handedly disarm and maim his much larger brothers. It was then he took him from his father and began to train him to be a part of the military.

Adulthood

Military training and being an imperial soldier was considered by Stahl to be a blessing. Due to his strength and determination, he was constantly promoted and rewarded. The Legatus who took him in gave him the name "Stahl" after witnessing how fast he was able to pick up the basics of organized combat. The word "Stahl" is a personification of the Garlian word "to steal" as it appeared as if Stahl was stealing all of his training from the more experienced soldiers over night. During a physical test, it was discovered that Stahl had a very small resonance with the Echo. Because of this, he was resistant to the influence of the Eikons. It was then Gaius van Baelsar recruited him to be a part of a special task force of "Eikon Slayers". Stahl was taught how these Eikons were a blight to the land and would eventually fall if they were not dealt with. He idolized Gaius and had finally found a purpose. His sense of justice and assuredness that he was doing the right thing filled him. This was his place in the world; to save it and rid it of a disease. It was then he adopted "quo Halcyon" as his surname. Halcyon being a word referring to radiantly peaceful days to come, the goal he was striving for.

Stahl contained large amounts of rapidly generating aether within his body that he could not put to use due to his disability in using magic. A weapon was created for him called "The Bloodletter" that would forcibly(and painfully) drain the aether out of his body to fire a bullet of pure light that could end a weakened primal. His team had moderate success, destroying a few lesser primals. Stahl's role was that of the "Coup de Grace", putting that bullet of light through the core of a primal that those more melee focused in his group would weaken. However, this ended in tragedy after a much strong primal was birthed. This team was resistant to their tempering, but they had no blessing of light. Through a scope, Stahl could do nothing as it tore through them one by one.

Garlean Invasion and the Calamity

After losing his teammates that he had forged a bond with, he was reassigned to the Eorzean Invasion effort. It was then that Stahl finally witnessed the horrors of the Imperial Emancipation. Squad commanders bickered and vied for power instead of working together, Tribunuses and Optios actively undermined each other's operations in order to advance themselves. The "savages" of Eorzea appeared to be simple folk who were just looking to live their life. It was then, on the Battle of Carteneau, Stahl witnessed another commander brutally slaughtering a Gridanian force. They were already beaten and in the process of retreating. The smart move would to flank into the company of soldiers to the south and take advantage of the situation, but no. The bloodlust of this commander did not allow him to see that. Stahl watched in horror as the Optio slowly drove his sword in and out of a Lalafell's leg, torturing the screeching creature. Just as when he was a child, Stahl could no longer sit by idly. With a quick flash of his blade, he felled the blood thirsty Optio. Drawing his rifled handgun, Stahl gunned down the rest of that commander's small squad during the confusion of losing their commander. Right as Stahl's own unit moved in to execute him him, Bahamut erupted from Dalamund. During the chaos of the Calamity, Stahl was able to shuffle into a cavern that opened in the land to take refuge from the hellish assault raining from above. He discarded his Garlian armor and put it away in a large pack. He relieved a fallen Elezen medic of his Ul'dahn grand company attire and followed the retreating forces back to Ul'dah.

End of Seventh Umbral Era to Present

Since the Calamity, Stahl has been aimless. His grand purpose of felling the Eikons under Gaius's command was lost and doubly painful in hearing of his death at the Praetorium. The Empire who he so revered showed it's true colors to him and he was disgusted. At first he spent his time as a refugee within the outskirts of Ul'dah before moving into the city after his skillset earned him work. He has taken kpbs as either a mercenary or escort for various caravans as well as other odd bits, but nothing he has done feels as if it had meaning. He earns enough to fill his belly and earn a place to lay his head at night, but the lingering feeling of being empty or missing something has been left looming over him since everything he knew in the world was turned upside down.
