Character

Brief History

Dangerously Curious!

When the moon was at its brightest, a young girl was born into the Qalli tribe. They named her Sarangerel, after the moonlight. Of a light gray skin like her mother and father, this young Xaela had fierce and ambitious eyes that shimmered brighter than polished gold. Her mother and father were crafters and often brought little Sarangerel into merchant outposts to see the sights and learn about their trade. She was curious, perhaps far more than a small child should be. During one trip to one of these trading posts, Sarangerel snuck away from her parents and explored a Sharlayan Caravan. She was on the back of a merchant's wagon when it suddenly began moving with the caravan.

When any child is separated from their family, one would expect them to cry, bawl, and wail. Sarangerel didn't do such a thing and was simply fascinated by the prospect of adventure. When she was discovered, the Sharlayan who found her wasn't exactly sure what to do and brought her to the Caravan's leader. The young Xaela was then adopted into the traveling band of scholars and merchants, staying with the leader. While she was curious about what happened to her parents, her blind innocence didn't recognize that they might be worried sick about her. Learning the tricks of their trade was something that didn't captivate her interest and she was far more curious about this new, unknown future.

Though she was only five years old, her world opened up as she lived with her new family. The leader of the Sharlayan group was a very wise and intelligent man. He taught Sarangerel about many different things. Under his guiding hand she learned about the stars and the Aether that flowed around them. She picked up fortune-telling as a hobby and let the stars guide the cards she picked and placed. Her interest in learning about Aether and how it coursed everywhere had grown as well and she spent countless hours reading all sorts of things relating to it. Of course, she didn't satisfy her growing curiosity through simply learning about the stars and the Aether, she learned about history and literature as well.

Sarangerel excelled in channeling the power of the stars and used that to further her studies into Aether. She was utterly fascinated and would accompany some of the healers within the caravan who assisted the sick or wounded. As the years passed, she could handle some of the simpler clients on her own. Her own limitations became her own body's physical limitation of being unable to handle more Aether than it was capable of and she could certainly become an accomplished Astrologian if she kept up her studies.

Delightfully Delicious Culinary Delights!

When Sarangerel was twelve, she accompanied one of the elders to the grand city of Limsa Lominsa. It was there that she was taken to The Bismarck, a restaurant that was also home to the Culinarians' Guild. The elder she was with broadened her horizons with the power of food. She tasted dishes that were never served where they were from and her bright and shining eyes were wide with immense curiosity. Upon seeing how she reacted to such and knowing that she was a young girl who wanted to learn everything she could, the elder offered her the chance to study at the guild. Without hesitation, this young Sarangerel took an apprenticeship at the Culinarians' Guild and the elder made the arrangements for her things to be sent over as soon as it was possible.

Sarangerel learned how to prepare a plethora of meals during her time at the guild. She practiced hard and memorized each of the lessons she was given. The young Xaela worked on practicing a multitude of skills. She would refine them no matter what the task, even if she had to chop onions for an hour straight or make boneless fish fillets. She took any task she was given and, through hard work, refined her knowledge and impressed her mentors.

While she had a wonderful time at the Guild, she had experienced her first taste of bullying within its doors. As Eorzeans rarely saw Au Ra at this time, she was often bullied at a young age. While she never picked fights and never was she ever mean to anybody else, she was picked on quite a bit. Often being called Voidsent or other silly names like Aldgoat Girl for her horns and other childish neck names her peers could think of. While this did dampen her spirit for a time, she merely redoubled her efforts and focused on impressing those that wished for her success as she maintained a steady course to being a great Culinarian. Amidst all of this, she did make amends with most of her bullies while continuing her practices as a healer and she improved her standings at the guild even further by helping those who were wounded from kitchen accidents.

Despite the conflict with her peers, their actions merely became ingredients to Sarangerel's successful culinary experience. She could make chop up landtrap salads so fresh that they were still twitching. She could whip up delicious rolanberry treats. She could search the perfect steaks. She learned everything she could and served up a most productive four year stay at the guild.

Something Something Adders

On her fourth year at the Culinarian's Guild, her mentor was tasked with preparing a dinner for several officers from the Order of the Twin Adders. While he could have easily prepared the feast on his own, he decided to take one of the younger members of the guild to assist him as a sous-chef. While there were plenty of bright candidates, he selected Sarangerel after much deliberation. The little Xaela was absolutely excited to hear that she had been chosen and immediately stuffed as many things as she could to prepare herself for the journey to the Shroud.

Their arrival to the great city-state of Gridania was nothing short of breath-taking for Sarangerel. She found herself fascinated by every little thing. From the different architecture around them, to the lush greenery that filled the air with a bountiful and peaceful aether. She felt almost at-home here and, were it not for her mentor snapping her out of her reverie, she would have surely forgotten why she was here in the first place.

Once they had both settled down at the Inn, Sarangerel and her mentor were both led to kitchen within the Order of the Twin Adders' headquarters. While not as extensive as the Culinarians' Guild, the ingredients and tools that the Grand Company's kitchen had was nothing to scoff at. Excited to see what sort of exotic food her mentor would cook up for the officers, the young Xaela did her best to assist and be the best gosh-darned sous-chef that she could be.
