Basic Info

Tanaya Banner-Header.jpg

"So... do you know anybody that wouldn't mind terribly to repeatedly get mutilated by heavy, bladed weapons so I can test out this new sigil that may or may not fix it all and is certainly quite painful for a few moments? No, no, no, you see I am quite certain the sigil works! I just need to -verify- it before risking combat applications... ...no? A shame, really." —Tanaya Esmut

Appearance

Height: Five fulms and three ilms, about as tall as Miqo'te get.

Weight: 117 ponze

Complexion: Silvery, ashen skin.

Hair: Dyed regulary black with red highlights. Her natural color would be a dark, ashen violet.

Eyes: Red... thats about as special as they get.

Particular Traits: Most of Tanaya's appearence or mannerisms are lessons in contradictions. Her haircut, if one would be so generous as to call it such, is an odd mix of pure chaos and order. It's not a total mess and her less than orderly strands usually all follow the same direction, while on the other hand she seems to take great pains to dye her hair properly, making sure it actually looks like her natural color, eyebrows included. Her physical frame is way too fit for somebody that supposedly has her nose in tomes all day long, giving her body visible muscle tone that looks very sinewy when she exudes more force than neccessary. Or would flex. Notibly her arms might as well be as trained as her fabled Miqo'te legs since she can be seen holding large tomes in one hand to read at a time without apparent effort, and where most spellcasters have fine, slender fingers and hands her's calloused and show quite a few small scars from what could be cuts.

She seems to have aged extremely well, the only wrinkles noticeable are laughter lines on the sides of her eyes.

Voice: Tanaya usually speaks with a soft, slightly lower than average voice. Picking her words somewhat carefully and hopefully without verbally pissing in somebody's ale. When she get's drunk or riled up she usually either goes completely quiet, which is never a good sign, or becomes increasingly louder the more inebriated or angered she gets. It is then when her adopted heritage comes to the fore and she drops her attempts of sounding like a studied, polite person and starts bellowing in what can only be described as an attempt to out-sea-wolf most Sea Wolves. Curses and the slurred pronounciation of sailors included.

Clothing Style: Tanaya is usually seen wearing a coat of some kind. She seems to favor black and red colors when picking her garments or jewelery. Neither favoring revealing clothing nor hiding herself within layers of fabric or leathers, she tends to simply wear what is practical for the occasion and weather.

Laterality (Brain): Left Hemisphere usually dominant, though her right often comes through when it comes to problem solving, improvisation or particulary vexing new projects.

Laterality (Hands): Is usually seen favoring her right hand. Though if one considers her atrociously bad handwriting she might as well be a 'lefty'.

Tastes

Hobbies

  • Drawing (both artistic and more rigid like technical blueprints and arcane sigils)
  • Reading
  • Fishing and sailing
  • Studying the anatomy of different creatures
  • Dabbling in all the different Disciplines of War on the side when she gets the time.
  • Singing and dancing (will deny both vehemently)

Likes

  • Honesty and straight-to-the-point conversations. She hates talking around a touchy subject. Talk about it or don't, but don't talk like walking over egg-shells.
  • Healing the wounded and dying (if only because it makes her feel she momentarily has godlike control over somebody else)
  • Dissecting various life forms (will not bring it up in polite conversation)
  • Observing, studying and causing pain in other people. She likes to see things squirm, but if the thing in question is articulate it's so much more interesting (TOTAL denial. She isn't even aware of it herself.)
  • Torture - for the above mentioned point -and- for the mental gratification of wringing secrets from unwilling subjects. (Will deny and is aware that it's an abhorrent practice)

Dislikes

  • Sweet-talking
  • Amorous advances by anybody that is not male -and- either Miqo'te or Roegadyn.
  • People that are walking stereotypes.
  • Crybabies and drama-queens (all genders).
  • Bodily contact without warning or consent. Varies from situation to situation obviously (I use common sense) but might result in anything between her freezing up to trying to mutilate the offender with whatever is at hand. Tomes, mugs, spoons...
  • probably alot more... will add...

Favorites

  • Color: Red as in Blood-Red.
  • Food: Is a sucker for any grilled fish; And meat of any creature she killed herself. ANY. (Will deny)
  • Drinks: Mead, Ale, Cider... usually in that order.
  • Scent: If she likes any perfumes she doesn't use them. She herself usually smells of smoke, ink and maybe fish. And blood more often than is comfortable for most folks, though she washes it off, but keen noses might still smell it. Very seldomly gunpowder.
  • Place: Taverns, Libraries and of course ships. Her all-time favorite would be a galleon that is a swimming tavern-library... of questionable reputation. But that's just day-dreaming.
  • Festival: None. She abhorrs them all equally.

Goals

  • World domination (cue manaical laughter)
    • If the above is not realistically attainable ...a long life, interesting stuff happening all the way.
      • Amassing knowledge and skills no matter how trivial it might seem now.

Religion

Tanaya tries to venerates all The Twelve equally, but seems to favor Llymlaen, the Navigator in casual conversation and when talking to herself. The irony is of course that she doesn't know Nald'thal, the Trader is her true Guardian.

Alignment

Chaotic Neutral: She believes herself to be more of a neutral-good person, doing whatever she does for the well-being of others and the Greater Good, not always railing against established laws but sometimes you just got to 'bend' them a little.

In reality she has done some nasty things, very questionable things, and it has taken it's toll on her in some unhealthy ways. Though she firmly believes her actions are purely logical and ultimately for the betterment of everybody in Eorzia the reality is that she sometimes acts out of petty or selfish reasons. And sometimes because it makes her feel good inside, even though it damn well shouldn't. But that is something she is unable, unwilling to see and acknowledge.

Personality

Quirks

  • Draws and experiments with new or modified magicial sigils in the most unlikely and impractical of places. (Taverns, during sailing, on the beach, etc.)
  • Tends to verbalize many a thought when alone (even if alone in a group of people like a tavern)
  • Has abnormally precise freehand skills when it comes to drawing (technical, magicial and visual)... perfectly straight lines, circles, measurements, details, etc.)
  • Ironically might have the worst handwriting in all of Eorzia. She writes 1-3 words per second depending on the word's length. This leads to a hand that is so fundamentally atrocious, sloppy and chaotic one wonders if it is not a different or secret language entirely. It's a wonder she herself can even decypher it.

Flaws

  • Overconfident at times (Not when it comes to lethal combat. She always assumes everybody can kill her. See fears below.)
  • Blunt and direct, having little patience for more than basic niceties.
  • Budding sadism
  • Often has a way to over-complicate solutions to simple problems.
  • Thinks on various topics way too long when left alone and not distracted by a problem or project... or people.

Fears

  • Being alone for more than a few days (Self-denial)
  • Feeling helpless / Not being in control
  • Cripling injury to herself
  • Death... more specifically, dying in a random, pointless way. Not having done something with her life.

Talents

  • Way too athletic for a spellcaster
  • Sailing and fishing
  • Setting things on fire
  • Triage and damage control
  • Above average patience (though hardly inexhaustible)
  • Obviously good-looking
  • Humble
  • Honest (when she isn't lying to herself)

Intelligence

TV Tropes

Feel free to point them out to me if there are any. I am bad at recognizing tropes.

Abilities and Skills

Personal

  • Actually a good listener
  • Singing and dancing above average
  • Multi-lingual (though since I am new I will stick to the common/trade language mostly)
  • Well-read

Weapons

  • Dagger-Dancing as well as using firearms from her slightly younger years to balance out the rigid studies of the Arcanist's school.
  • Fistfighting/Brawling: She has way more experience in fighting bare-handed than she will admit to even herself. Nothing to write ballads about though.
  • Proficient with (great)sword, shield, (great)axe, spear, and heavy armor. She has the equivalent of basic training for soldiers of the City States' guards. She is however surprisingly nimble even in a set of full platemail armor... for how long though is another thing entirely.
  • Archery is also amongst her skill-sets but quickly got neglected once she got her hands on her first hand-cannon.

Magic

  • Arcanist (Mathemagickial) Spellcraft, including the Summoner and Scholar branches (though she plays those down alot since she dislikes 'needing help' from a summon)
  • Conjurer and Thaumaturgical training. She has little practice with both though, but she knows almost enough in both schools of Aether Manipulation to qualify as a White- and Black Mage respectively... if only on paper. The reality is that her's is a book-knowledge primarily. She lacks practical experience. She also sees the two other ways of harnessing ones Aether and the Aether around her as inferior to the more structured, logical, geometry-based Arcanist Spellcraft.

Crafting

Tanaya has dabbled in a few things, mostly to know how things work and how people think (like it or not, your profession changes how you percieve the world); thus far she has found that:

  • Weaving is for young girls or very old women
  • Armor-, Black- and Goldsmithing, while practical, are not her thing.
  • Leatherworking has merit but she lacks the patience.
  • Carpentry is an honorable craft as any, especially when you build ships. But also not floating her boat... so to speak.
  • Alchemy is the one thing that makes alot of sense to her, and she tries to get more practice done, but time and luck keep working against that wish.
  • Cooking... because calling anything she produces in a kitchen 'culinary' would be an insult to the profession. The reality is that chances are she will set the kitchen on fire when she tries to cook something. Do NOT make her cook for you, it will not end well for anybody. The only thing she can do properly is put a fish or a slab of meat on a stick and hold it over an open fire without messing it all up.
  • Fishing seems to be in her blood though. She is pretty good at it for somebody not earning a living off it -and- enjoys it too.

Unknown.

Positive

  • Meela Jakkya (vaguely positive) - Tanaya so far finds the barkeep of the Drunken Moogle tavern likeable enough, while still being reserved.

Neutral

Affiliations

Modified Spells & Sigils

  • UNTESTED: A Sigil of a basic Physick spell that includes a version of Ruin. The goal is to use the harmful force of the Ruin sigil to forcibly and painfully set an open fracture at a distance without the caster having to manually set the bone, while the Physick dulls the pain and allows the fracture and torn flesh to mend.
  • UNTESTED: A new sigil.

History

Name and Lifestyle

Actually is named Aerstmoht Waektyrnwyn. When she started roaming Eorzia she often found people had problems remembering her name or pronouncing it properly. Over the years she stopped using her last name and just went by Aerstmoht. Eventually that devolved into the the more or less acurate phonetic version Esmut. She 'met' a particulary exceptional Miqo'te during her darker days, and though they both parted ways very violently, she still had alot of respect for the woman. That woman's name was T'anaya -somethingsomething-. She liked the sound of it so much she adopted it as her first name out of both personal preference and respect for the woman she killed. So eventually she just started to introduce herself as Tanaya Esmut.
