Biography

Tom was born in the Black Shroud to Hayao Agreas, a Doman merchant from a wealthy family who had recently arrived in Eorzea to work for Amajina & Sons Mineral Concern, and a young Gridanian woman named Elizabeth Hayward. Although his father married his young mother shortly after his birth, the arrangement proved to be a far cry from what the sweet, naive Elizabeth had dreamed of being married. Hayao was rarely at home due to the nature of his work; and even when he was around, he proved to be a cold, abusive husband and father. Gil orders would be sent back home to the Shroud to help support the family, until eventually he just...stopped coming altogether. In a fit of youthful recklessness, Tom left home at fourteen to travel to Uldah, against the wishes of his mother. Although he justified this as an opportunity for him to find some sort of work to help provide for them in Hayao's absence, part of him believed he'd be able to find and confront the father that abandoned them...

A naive and completely unskilled redneck boy from the backwaters of the Shroud, Tom spent the first three years of his time in Uldah living on the streets doing anything he could to scrap together some coin. For him, this meant anything from taking any manual labor job that would hire him to begging and petty theft...sometimes even going as far as to prostitute himself. Keeping just enough coin for food or the occasional inn room, the rest of what little gil he could acquire would be sent back home to provide for his family, along with letters filled with false claims of apprenticeships or steady dock work.

Now seventeen, his time in Uldah had shaped the once wide-eyed and naive Shroud boy into a bitter and angry young man, growing more and more cynical by the day until he finally decided that he couldn't take anymore and it was time for things to change. He had heard tall tales told by drunken men in Ul'dah's seedier establishments of the legendary Gladiators that fought for fame and riches in the city's Coliseum...stories which left him with stars in his eyes. With nothing much left to lose at this point, Tom decided that he'd rather fight for his life in the ring, with a chance at making a fortune than fight for his life on the street any longer, where he struggled to make enough to survive...

There was, however, a flaw in this plan, as he obviously lacked the funds to purchase training at the Gladiator's Guild...so he would have to improvise. He reasoned that while he may be poor, perhaps the guild would train him for free if he could beat their students...because surely they'd GLADLY train someone who could dispatch all of the Guild's best prospects, right? So for nearly a full year, the disenfranchised, hungry young man would wait in alleys outside the Guild or in the pubs that the trainees frequented, and pick fights with them...all of them. At once. Every single day for nearly a year...

And, as any sane person would expect, every day they would easily kick the boy's ass. Despite receiving beatings so thorough that he sometimes wouldn't wake up from them til several days later, he refused to relent, and eventually became a bit of a running joke among the the Guild's students. This would prove to be a blessing for the young man, however, as eventually stories of "that stupid homeless kid who keeps picking fights with all of us at once" would reach the ears of some of the Guild's more storied members...

"Hayward? He's an idiot...lazy, good for nothing, cheeky little shit is what he is. Reckless too...almost to the point of being incompetent. It's like the man has no sense of self preservation. All that being said there isn't a single gods-damned soul I'd rather having watching my back in battle...take that for what you will." -Coil Tyradin
