Tyonis Trueblade is a wandering swordsman who takes up occasional residence in Ul'dah. He is often seen selling his skills in Guilds, taverns, and town squares, although he will sometimes work for little to nothing if a pretty girl begs him for aid.

Appearance

Tyonis is a Hyur Midlander of notable height. His physique is muscular, although not bulky enough to be overtly noticeable. Because of his life on the road and his aversion to personal hygiene, his face was often ragged and his clothes were always dirty.

Five years after the End of an Era, Tyonis became much more publicly presentable thanks to the influence of Alona Rhys. He sports neatly cropped hair, although a notable portion of it has turned white from stress. After being forced to constantly bathe, his skin color deepened in tone to reflect his improved health. Spending a great deal of time with various Highlander tribes drastically improved his muscle tone and definition because of their training regime and eating habits.

Personality

Currently testing various alignments to reflect his personality.

Leaning toward Chaotic Neutral.

Character Biography

Tyonis Magstrom was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a golden sword in his hand. Bastard and Heir Apparent to the Magstrom lineage, a noble family renown in Ul'dah for raising cunning politicians and unparalleled warriors, Tyonis was trained from birth to swoon with the aristocracy and slay anyone else. Like many young men, he dreamed of fighting on the Bloodsands, gaining favor for himself and his family.

But at the age of ten, Valen Magstrom would be born and christened the Magstrom Heir, on grounds of legitimacy. Grief-stricken and mad with rage, Tyonis attempted to murder his baby brother only to be rebuffed and formally disowned by his father. Shamed, he retreated into the backalleys of Ul'dah with nothing but a bag of coins and a sword strapped to his back. He would spend a year accruing the funds to enter the Bloodsands, thus fulfilling a life-long dream and regaining his honor; however his experiences as a gladiator would forever taint his idyllic worldview. Young Tyonis became an egotistical cynic, driven by his base instincts and the thrill of battle.

Two years prior to the End of an Era, Tyonis met a woman who changed his life: Alona Rhys. Through his experiences with Alona, Tyonis would regain a part of himself thought long dead. With her support, Tyonis returned to his family estate to formally acknowledge his younger brother as the Magstrom Patriarch in place of his deceased father. Tyonis returned the blade he had stolen the night he was disowned to commemorate the appointment. He would continue traveling with Alona before being called by the Sultansworn to combat the Garlean threat.

Half-dead and amnesic, Tyonis eventually returned to Ul'dah one year later to find Alona gone. His personality and demeanor were greatly changed thanks to the trauma of war. The great flame of his soul that threatened to consume everything around him lay smothered and replaced by a strained benevolence. He struggled with the emergence of his new personality and the recurring flashes of his old life until his disappearance on the Battle of Carteneau Flats.

Against all odds, Tyonis survived to travel the world, searching for the love of his life. Five years after the Dalamud's fall, he finds himself on Eorzean soil once more.

Powers and Abilities

"As long as the pointy-end is still sharp, I'll make due."

The Trueblade - Although Tyonis boasts a myriad of combat skills, chief among them is his prowess with the sword. After living and fighting alongside various Highlander tribes, Tyonis was eventually dubbed Trueblade, a surname he prefers over his real one.

Mage of the Aether Channels - A unique Thaumuturgical theory practiced by few Highlander tribes and passed down from master to apprentice. Its practitioners must possess extraordinary physical ability to survive the training. There is a religious and spiritual aspect to the theory, but Tyonis never bothered to learn it.

Bearer of the Cloak and Dagger - Although he dislikes subversive activities, Tyonis is an accomplished thief and a passable assassin.

Hardy Survivalist - Thanks to his time living in Thanalan and Ul'dah, Tyonis grew skilled in wasteland survival techniques, but his adventures abroad have expanded his knowledge to many other environments.

Man of Great Fortitude - One of Tyonis' most dangerous traits is his innate ability to shrug off wounds, injuries, and poisons that would outright kill any regular humanoid. It was this trait that enabled him to survive the intitial opening of his Aether Channels.

Son of the Aristocracy - Despite being overshadowed by his brutalism, Tyonis' training and experience as a man of nobility has been indispensable.

Equipment

Type XIIa Longsword - Tyonis' favored weapon. It is a two-handed, 3"5' longsword with a cruciform hilt and a diamond-shaped pommel. When used properly, every inch of this sword can be considered a weapon. It also functions as a powerful amplifier for Tyonis' spells because of the regents used in its creation. It has seen much use, and has been resharpened many times, making its edge appear crude and unrefined. It is commonly strapped across his back and over his right shoulder.

Knight's Sword - A smaller, one-handed  version of Tyonis' favored sword. Its speed and versatility make it more suited against speed-fighters. It functions as Tyonis' off-hand weapon when dual-wielding. Normally belted on his left hip. Tyonis actually prefers to use this sword against most adversaries, keeping his best skills hidden until they are absolutely necessary.

Throwing Knives - Tyonis carries six knives on his person and is somewhat skilled in their use. They serve as a painful distraction rather than an actual weapon, however.

Fang Blade - A retractable blade hidden underneath Tyonis' left sleeve. It has seen many uses over the course of his lifetime and is one of his favorite trump-cards.

Wolf Claw - A retractable blade hidden under the sole of Tyonis' right shoe. Like the Fang Blade, it is one of Tyonis' favorite trump-cards.

Half-gauntlets - A pair of miniature gauntlets that takes the appearance of finger-less gloves. These gauntlets are made of hardened leather with a single plate of folded steel over the back of the hand.

Opiate Extract - A narcotic that serves as a powerful painkiller. Larger doses can induce complete numbness or drive the drinker unconscious. Tyonis carries a single dose contained in a small metal vial the size of his pinky finger. Because it is highly addictive, Tyonis will take the dose only when absolutely necessary.

Affiliations

"You are the only person who I allow to live by my side."

Alona Rhys - Lover. Tyonis' devotion to this woman borders on obsession. They have fought tooth and nail for and against each other, forging a love in fire and blood. Friend and foe called him "Alona's Dog" or "Rhys' Rabid Mongrel."

Aysun Demiir - Acquaintance. Tyonis counseled Aysun once or twice and flirted with her on occasion. Affectionately called her "Kitten."

Galvadan Edgecrusher - Distant Friend. Tyonis came to know Galvadan through his blood-bonded sister, Alona Rhys. Even though they never truly saw eye-to-eye, both were willing to work together in cases where Alona was involved.

Gustav Lapis - Acquaintance. Tyonis met Gustav through Lyriah Karnelle, but Tyonis quickly labeled the man as boring.

Kyri Sagitta - Acquaintance. Tyonis met Kyri once as she was passing through the Astalicia. He flirted with her for a while.

Lyriah Karnelle - Estranged Friend. Tyonis was once close to Lyriah and incessantly teased her about her lack of womanly charms, but they have not spoken since their dispute five years ago. Affectionately called her "Flatchest."

Nanami Takanaru - Acquaintance. Once, Tyonis and Galvadan saved Aysun and Nanami from a pack of mongrels in Thanalan.

Navei Asue - Estranged Friend. One of the few people whos company Tyonis enjoyed. But after he lost his memories, that attachment disappeared along with the others. They fought alongside each other a few times. Their final meeting was in Ul'dah when Tyonis attempted to murder him five years ago.

Reta Suri - Estranged Friend. After Tyonis lost his memories, Reta provided him with a place to live. A romance between them blossomed, but Tyonis vanished before it could develop further.

Seohyun Iyasu - Distant Friend. Tyonis found Seohyun staring at the sea while wandering about the Astalicia. He served as her bodyguard twice. Affectionately called her "Princess."

Xenedra Ambreaus - Distant Friend. A friend of Alona Rhys, Xenedra is a frequent target of Tyonis' affections, much to their chagrin. Tyonis danced with her once and asks her for another round every chance he gets. Affectionately called her "Red."

Other Notes

"Damn crows... I'm not dead yet." (Art by Wysteria)

Tyonis was once known as the "Prince of the Bloodsands" because of his noble birth. He later changed his title from Prince to Mongrel after fostering a deep hatred of his lineage. "Mongrel of the Bloodsands" was a reference to his illegitimacy, but later become a moniker for his brutal and animalistic fighting style.

Tyonis is incompatible with regular magical theories because of his phobia of magic and teleportation. His aversion is so prevalent that he will forgo magical treatment for all but lethal wounds. Although he has grown somewhat accustomed to magic in the last five years, he still suffers from extreme nausea after teleporting.

Despite being a Midlander, Tyonis was dubbed "the Trueblade" by the Highlanders tribesmen with whom he lived and fought alongside. He quickly grew to love the title and took it as his surname in typical Highlander tradition. "Trueblade" is a reference to the Fire Emblem character archetype of the same name. In the Japanese version of FE, Trueblade is replaced with "Kensei" which means Sword Saint/Saint of Swords, a moniker for legendary swordsmen like King Arthur, Lancelot of the Lake, and Miyamoto Musashi.

Tyonis' holds dual Elemental Affinities: Fire and Lightning. When casting spells that reflect either Elemental Affinity, his eye color will shift in hue. The level of change depends on the power of the spell.

Dancing is one of Tyonis' favorite hobbies. Owing to his aristocratic up-bringing, Tyonis is skilled in a variety of formal dances as well as few colloquial ones.

Tyonis has grown to scorn his lineage, preferring his associates to call him by his first name, his other surname, or his Mongrel moniker.

Tyonis is an unrepentant womanizer. He enjoys the challenge of seducing women almost as much he does bedding them.

Tyonis is a perpetual pauper - it is almost as if he has been cursed by the Twelve to be eternally poor.

Tyonis' Tvtropes

Archetypal Character: Wandering Mercenary who sells his skills to the Highest Bidder.

Berzerk Button: Threatening Alona Rhys. Also see Violently Protective Boyfriend.

Blade Below the Shoulder: The retractable blades hidden in Tyonis' sleeve and shoe. His throwing knives kinda count too.

Bling of War:  A golden sheathe that bears the dignity of a monarch's crown. It is decorated by blue enamel with edges of white silver. There is a corresponding sword married to the sheathe, but Tyonis returned the blade to Valen after formally renouncing his heritage.

Blue Blood: Subverted. Disowned Bastard of the Magstrom Lineage. Formally renounced his claim to the House prior to the End of an Era.

Combat Pragmatist: Tyonis is ambidextrious and specializes in Duel-Wielding, but does not often utilize his skills all at once, prefering to surprise his opponents at the last possible moment in order to secure a kill-stroke. This normally leads into Tyonis' Theme Music Power-Up, where his moments of sheer asskickery are written while listening to Emiya (Guitar Version).

Crowning Moment of Awesome: After impaling Alona's deranged fiance through the back, Tyonis shoved his head into a vat of green acid until the bubbles stopped.

Death Glare: When using powerful magic that reflects his Elemental Affinity, his eyes change color. That's pretty much the only warning you get before Bullet Time kicks in.

Evil Feels Good: Tyonis' Alignment prior to meeting Alona Rhys was Chaotic Evil. It hasn't changed much.

Hero who Prefers Swords: Ideally double-edged longswords.

I can Still Fight: After being impaled on a lance and taking an arrow barrage, Tyonis managed to get up and kill the closest Garlean before being blown off a cliff.

Improbable Fencing Skills: He's also known to Spin Swords to Deflect Stuff.

Leitmoif: Mongrels and wolves.

Master Swordsman: He's just REALLY good at killing people with swords.

No Cure for Evil: Even after five years of personal rehabilitation and soul searching, Tyonis STILL loves killing people. He just has more control over his impulses now.

Opposites Attract: Tyonis' reckless abandon serves as a sharp contrast to Alona's calculating calm. Their Elemental Affinities also reflect this: Fire Melts Ice and Earth Grounds Lightning.

Parental Abandonment: He was disowned by his father after trying to kill his baby brother.

Red Baron: "Mongrel of the Bloodsands" or just "Mongrel."

Screw the Rules, I Have a Sword: Summerizes Tyonis' approach to law and authority. Also see Asskicking Equals Authority.

Social Darwinist: "The weak are food for the strong." Ties into his Animal Motif as a predator. Also see his Quote on this wiki.

Swords are Just Better: "Unlike a dagger, lance, or axe, the sword is the perfect combination of power, range, speed, and versatility. It is a viable and reliable weapon under almost any circumstances."

The Champion: To Alona Rhys.

The Lancer: To Alona Rhys. And anyone else who prefers to use a pen over a sword.

Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Impaled a gunblader through the throat before he could pull the trigger and shoot him between the eyes. Tyonis has one hell of an arm.

Took a Level in Badass: During the five year time-skip, Tyonis trained and traveled across the world, drifting from battlefield to battlefield. He also mastered a Dangerous Forbidden Technique that gives him Bullet Time.

Trauma Induced Amnesia: After taking a nasty blow(s) to the head and being catapulted off a cliff in Twelvewood, Tyonis lost his memories.
