Appearance
Valrh’iq is tall and mildly muscled, and has rather typical Miqo’te features, including heterochromia and some face markings. He has two crossed scars across his nose bridge, which he gained by unintentionally angering a fellow sailor and provoking him into what was supposed to be a mere fist fight. He has blonde hair with little strips of blue, which he thinks are a genetic mistake or some strange thing of that sort, and frankly doesn’t remember the time when the blue strands started growing into his blonde, wavy locks. Despite having been a sailor, being in Ul’dah taught him to be neater and somewhat less careless with his appearance as he may have been out at sea. He often doesn’t like wearing tight, uncomfortable clothes, yet he wouldn’t mind them looking good at the same time whenever the circumstances allowed. He is quite tanned, and has a slight accent that would unmistakably sound like a sailor’s, yet he uses a more sophisticated diction in an attempt to hide it, and mostly succeeds. Other markings he has are a thin scar across his back, which he most likely doesn't remember what caused it, and a tattoo of Oschon's symbol, the staff, near his shoulder blade.
History
Valrh’iq had a fairly normal childhood, his family being average Lominsian folk, if not poor in comparison to most. He had a much older brother whom he has little memory of and who left the family and sailed to some unknown fate, never to be seen again. It was otherwise a happy family, he always thought, until an uncle of his appeared out of the blue, greedily seeking materialistic help, which had indirectly caused several problems to sprout between his parents and putting a heavy psychological load on him for a good part of his teenage years. His first job to support his family was a helper at Llymlaen’s temple, where he ran small errands or swept the floor. There, he heard of Oschon from one of the travelers who came to pay their respects, and later researched and eventually followed the god, choosing him as his patron deity and keeping his acts of worship very secret and personal. Sooner or later, his uncle left for Ul’dah, intending to become some rich merchant one day and promising to return the favor when he could. A lie, Valrh’iq knew. He was glad the man had left anyway, and spent a more peaceful year with his family. He saved up his pay that year, and then unconsciously followed in his brother’s footsteps and left his parents with the larger share of his savings. Since then, he is much of a loner and prefers to not make contact with any family members, if he crossed paths with any, mostly out of some inexplicable fear of them. He was hired as a sailor on a small Lominsian trading ship, the Vanessa. There, Val made a few friends, not being that much of a social soul, and gained a lot of experience. He was taught several things by the sailors on the Vanessa, and easily gathered knowledge and gained skills in sailing, as well as picking up a few technical skills from any craftsmen or technicians on board and finding a passion for understanding how machines and ships worked. Most of the time, however he kept to himself, though he did seem to very rarely show his happier, more cheerful side whenever a celebration took place. Inevitably, he was moved to several other ships, few of which he hated, but most he loved and enjoyed being a simple sailor on. He did earn a rank or two as time passed. He came to love the sea more than ever, and became quite courageous, perhaps even foolhardy and reckless to some. One day, on his travels, he met a certain Au’ra lady at a tavern, whom he thought was very much like him. She seemed shy and not the best at small talk, yet she somehow did talk with emotion about purpose and cause, and how she was in search of a cause to lend her sword to. The matter tugged at the back of Valrh’iq’s mind for a long time, and slowly but steadily grew. Owning a ship or a library came to mind when Valrh’iq. Or even just working as a simple librarian, but that was too confining for a sailor’s spirit and it all still lacked a true, good purpose. After joining multiple ships and having quite a decent reputation, he decided to travel to Ul’dah with what gil he made and become a gladiator, for no other reason than that he felt it was a calling. Time flied and he grew into an adult, and a desire to belong somewhere tugged at his soul alongside the one to have purpose. Ul’dah, despite its heat and dry air, seemed an appealing enough place to call home, at least temporarily. There, he joined the Gladiator’s guild, and was a bit disoriented at first, being unused to attacking people even if just to spar. He also spent a brief time at the coliseum there, but didn’t fancy the crowds and noise, sitting there merely to note the Gladiators’ movements, victories, or defeats. Then, he became a wandering Gladiator in search of both, a home and a purpose. As an act of nostalgia joined the Maelstrom, yet still did not consider it a good enough cause. It was to him merely a way to make money. Deep within him, he still wants to someday own a small study or library, or perhaps even write a book on different cultures, customs and traditions, which he would gather as he travelled. He always kept his more intellectual interests a secret, however, and would often read before going to bed only, or whenever he had the time to wander Limsa Lominsa alone. Still, his search for a purpose and a home continues. He is also about to begin practicing using magic, which is a field he is hardly talented in, to become a Paladin.
Personality
As he grew and moved away from sea life, Valhr’iq ironically became more sailor-like and talkative, once he is around the right people and is comfortable. Otherwise, he may come off as rude and unfriendly, without intending to, of course. He still keeps his distance, and values his personal bubble a lot. Treating someone with his general friendliness is quite a meaningful thing, and he would often get a bit hurt or offended if people did not accept that little gift of his, ignored it, or replied too aggressively or angrily. He is quite slow to anger, unless the situation became dangerous or life-threatening to almost anyone he knows. Anger is mostly a way to hide any fear he has, and otherwise he has the ability to easily ignore anything that frustrates him. He is also very sarcastic, and his sarcasm—or just any silly joking about—is probably another sign of his acceptance of others, which is one of the things that prevents him from being a social butterfly, since some may find his sarcasm offensive. He did learn, however, not to joke with strangers, or not joke at all until he was sure the person wouldn’t mind. He has a lot of strangely conflicting and hypocritical habits about him, like his inability to mingle with people, yet he would care about them. He doesn’t like how people hide their emotions, and believes they should be let out, while he probably has very little deep or emotional conversations with others, mostly becoming sarcastic to avoid them. He hates crowds, and would often walk into crowded taverns to order tea or coffee and sit there grumbling to himself about the noise, and several other funnily inexplicable actions, like keeping a small stack of books beside his bed or his ability to fall asleep sitting on a rock in the Ul’dah heat. He can be a bit naïve at times, despite his eagerness for lore and love for books—most of which were story books and tales or ancient lore—and he can also be blunt and careless. He is very superstitious and prefers not to talk about certain things he believes can be harmful or bring bad luck. Unless those he holds close are threatened, he sticks to certain morals and isn’t aggressive, and is generally very helpful. Overall, he is secretly very kind and loving, and may slowly let that hidden person out, if put with the right people and under the right circumstances. Things that he rather enjoys are coffee and pastries or cake—even though food isn’t something he pays much attention to—relaxing in quiet places, naps, and long talks with an understanding friend, which are quite rare, if he had any. He also likes spending time alone at the end of each day, doing one of his little strange hobbies or just reading. Things he dislikes are the cold, being sick or hurt, forests and noisy places. He doesn’t like fighting people, and prefers to kill only savage creatures and do as minimal damage as possible to people, save for certain rare occasions or when he is pushed to do it.

Other Notes
Religion
Despite growing up in Limsa Lominsa, he is more drawn to the god of Wanderers, Oschon. He started being religious at quite a later age, somewhere around the end of his teens, and later on, his drive to find a place he'd call home made his decision to worship Oschon make more sense, and seem almost miraculous.
Quirks
Likes to huddle up in a bed whenever he reads, mostly so that nobody sees him.
