L’selle lived with his mother, Emilyn Ran, and father, L’riha Tia, until his dad was lost when Sahagins ambushed a Maelstrom ship. Despite being only seven years old, the void L’riha left festered and caused L’selle to become unshakably devoted to his mother. She did her utmost to take care of her only family by using her modest culinarian skills. Still, without financial support, Emilyn was accosted by others telling her that the only way to support herself and her son was to become a prostitute. Certain that his mother would become secure once rid of himself as a financial burden, L’selle left his mother at the age of twelve.

Afterwards, he joined Oribit— a group of outcasts named for their dependence on society but inability to join it. L’selle met Allen Ravenwind and quickly became as close as brothers with him. Estinien Lothaire, the savage head of the party, had established himself in the port city-state’s underground several years prior with the Keeper of the Moon, Senah. Together they took on odd jobs to make ends meet.
Two years later, Senah’s guileful nature attracted a newcomer to the gang. Ralora Nanora, a soft-spoken Plainsfolk boy. Endeared by the younger member’s sharp mind and callowness, L’selle looked after Ralora as an older brother.
Once L’selle was 17 and Allen was 18, Allen decided that he would leave Limsa Lominsa and pursue thaumaturgy in Ul’dah. L’selle declined the offer to study in the desert city-state; he hadn’t the coin to cover the various expenses that were due with such a trip. The night before Allen’s departure, the two share a meal and made toasts for good fortune to mark their split paths. Allen offered to cover the payment and presented L’selle with a cateye stone anklet. A demure trinket, but important and holding the weight of their relationship. L’selle agreed to keep up correspondence via letters but refrained from revealing that he actually wasn’t literate.
With his best friend gone, L’selle steadily becomes detached from the group. Sensing his discomfort, Senah attempted to worm herself into his heart. His patience easily declined to dangerously low levels until she finally set him off. She had revealed that the reason Allen had the funds to move to Ul’dah was because she had sold his mammet.
The device was something the man had been slaving on for as long as L’selle knew him. The puppet held a charm within that halted Allen’s faulty aether stores from deteriorating. Thaumaturgy requires high levels of aether to achieve, and the lack of his mammet spelled disaster for Allen’s practice of the art. His trip was ruined, and the deal had been made before Allen’s consent was given. Disgusted that she had abused his friend’s trust and that he himself had benefited off it it while sending Allen off, L’selle’s disposition crumbles.
Now bereft of any ties to Orbit, L’selle could no longer stand to remain in the port city. Plagued with a furious temper and a hangover from the previous night, he flees to Summerford Farms. Too inebriated to form a full attempt at exoneration, he rests in the shade of an apple tree for the day. It isn't long before a colloquial Elezen interrupts the boy’s reverie with a proposition. If L’selle became his bodyguard, he would allow the petulant Miqo’te to accompany him back to Gridania in three days’ time. Sensing the opportunity in the offer, L’selle accepts, but only on the condition that the man teaches him how to read and write.
The Elezen’s name was Arismont Iseterre. He was exiled from the Black Shroud for not showing the proper respect towards the Elementals. According to him, the “buggers don’t even exist.” They were fairy tales created to keep dimwitted children from misbehaving. L’selle didn't care one way or another. His master, in turn, had a large dislike of the way L’selle fought. Insisting that he would drop the contract if the boy didn't abandon his rogue-like fighting style, Arismont offered another deal. In return for instilling his style of lancework into the boy, L’selle would have to use its power to protect Gridania. After all, he was not banned from the city.
The Calamity struck as soon as L’selle reached his 19th nameday. While escaping the chaos, he joins a woman named Y’lantaa and other victims in a shelter. When the dead are gathered for burial, L’selle discovers Arismont, who had been missing, among them. He puts nearly all of his savings towards the man’s funeral. Y’lantaa then joins him in relief efforts before taking a job as a waitress at the Bobbing Cork.
To boost the restoration process, more soldiers were admitted in the Order of the Twin Adder. True to his word, L’selle joined the Grand Company as a rankless officer. Since he never joined the Lancer’s Guild and never registered in the Adventurer’s Guild, he was considered an outsider and his fighting style heathenish. Whenever he headed to restock the Twin Adder garrison near Fallgourd Float, L’selle would visit Y’lantaa.
More and more often, he thought of his old home of Limsa Lominsa, wondering how bad the destruction was in Vylbrand. After Y’lantaa’s urging and 7 years, he finally sent his first letter, containing funds from his job, to his beloved mother.
After nearly a year in planning, L’selle was able to return to Limsa Lominsa and reunited with his mother. He spent several months in the city-state to reacquaint himself with his old home and enlist in the Maelstrom. Following the trip, he left for Ul'dah to visit the late Arismont's wife, Astrelle. Through one of her weaving networks, he discovered his old friend Allen, effectively ending his circle of miscommunication.
