Verah Amariyo is a young Miqo'te Bard and Magic user, wielding a large bow as her preferred weapon. She hails from deep in the The Black Shroud where her Keeper of the Moon clan resides, it is here that she learned the art of Archery through the necessity of hunting for her clan. Verah's desire to understand other ranged styles of combat inspired her to seek training from both the Conjurer's and Arcanist's guilds found in Gridania and Limsa Lominsa, respectively.

Profile

Appearance

(Commission drawing by Lilaccu)

Verah is a young woman with a round face, creamy iridescent pale skin, straight white hair, occasionally appearing gray due to the grey color at the roots, and expressive, pale silver eyes. The hair around her face typically falls a few inches past chin length, while the length of it in the back falls past her shoulders when it is not pulled back into a ponytail with a white clip. Her most notable traits are the purple-blue markings on her face, her sharp silver eyes which shine like the light of a full moon, and her very long, pure white tail. It was common in her clan for her to hear how much she resembled her mother, despite having her father's silver eyes.

Verah is a bit on the shorter side compared to more normal-size Miqo'te, yet she is not short enough to really stand out too much. Her body is lean and well toned, due to the physical demand of her fighting style and she is not wont for curves. Typically, Verah wears a variation of the standard Bard attire. She can often be seen wearing the large dark blue hat that typically blocks vision of her eyes, a fact Verah is very aware of and takes full advantage. Her shirt is held closed by what appears to be a bronze-colored broach, falling off her shoulders the shirt ends in billowing sleeves. Over this shirt, she wears a shawl-like light purple scarf around her neck and cloth of similar fabric around her waste. Her pants are one half purple with white stars and the other half purple and black stripes. The fabric of her clothing is light and breathable, making movement easier despite the many layers the Bard outfit usually takes. She carries her bow on her back, a bow with a glamour cast upon it to make it look like Verah's current favorite bow, the Ebony Longbow. The green-blue color it glows when it is taken out for combat is a pleasant contrast to the usual purple of her outfit.

Personality

(screenshot)

"She was not always that way, her heart was not always so cold. Her guard was not always up, and that wall placed around her soul was not always there. Heartbreak changed her heart, made her less trusting of love. I understand that, I know why, but she is still deserving of something real. Someone to pick up the broken pieces, and tell her it wasn't her fault." - Revin Fletcher

Verah is determined, concentrated and independent. Often coming off as cold, standoffish, and taciturn. Often she distances herself from those who would otherwise be considered potential friends and companions, and does not smile often.

Though withdrawn, Verah does not shirk away from what she considers her duty. As much as she resents participating in groups, she is the first to participate in order to ensure that what is necessary gets done. She is nevertheless a kind-hearted, compassionate and intelligent individual underneath, sombered and tormented only by what she perceives to be her own past failings. Having lost her lover in a tragic event, Verah has become reserved and prefers to keep her emotions hidden. After the tragedy, she locked her heart away and threw away her own happiness as a means of self-punishment.

Verah has a tendency to act the way she does out of fear for getting too close to people, fearing hurting others and getting hurt herself. Having already lost the feeling of comfort loved-ones provide before. Verah does not believe in relying on others, as friends and loved ones are inevitably lost and in the end she will be alone.

Combat

General

Verah is an offensive ranged fighter, choosing distance, maneuverability, and deadly precision over sluggish movements and wild brute force. Her initial training as a hunter with her clan taught her where to find likely vital points depending on her enemy's biological composition, and aim for those points with adept fidelity as to end the battle quickly.

Though she prefers to end a battle quickly, she is very observant and adaptive to a given combat situation that may require more endurance.

Though Verah's preferred weapon is that of a bow, she has taken to training magics for healing and offense in combat. Though she is quick and adept, Verah's choice in cloth armor for favor of maneuverability over defense makes her an easy target for assassin types.

Relationships

Family

Verah was born to a clan that lived within the Twelveswood, where everyone was extended family. Her father had come from a neighboring clan to breed with her mother, a tradition not uncommon among Keepers of the Moon to keep the gene pool diverse. Her mother and father were close, though there was no love between them, there was little doubt that they still cared for one another. By extension, they cared for Verah as well as any other youngling within the clan.

However, when Verah was nearing young adulthood yet still deemed too young for conflict, the war with the Garleans surfaced and the Battle for Carteneau was nigh. Verah's father enlisted with the Order of the Twin Adder to fight for his home, clan, and family. But with the Calamity, it ensured that he would not return to the family he cared for. And the destruction wrought by Bahamut left Verah's clan desolate with little choice but to hurry for safer lands.

Verah was raised into adulthood from then on by her mother and what was left of her clan after the events of the Calamity.

Friendships

Verah has not had much time to make friendships throughout her life, and more recently has had no interest in making any new ones. So the list of friendships or relationships is rather short.

(Revin Fletcher Screenshot)

Revin Fletcher is a long-time friend from the early days of Verah's adventuring. An adventurer himself, he was a mutual friend between Verah and Lancefer. Revin was originally one of many men and women serving the Wood Wailers serving Gridania, yet his desire to make a name for himself led him to joining the adventurer's guild with Verah. Revin has a positive attitude and he is always ready for work. He has an energetic personality and a short attention span that has led to much teasing from close friends. He is a loyal adventurer to Eorzea and dreams of becoming a hero. He is a very sociable and outgoing person, easily befriending almost everyone he meets.

(Lancefer Glearant Screenshot)

Lancefer Glearant was a warm, charismatic, and friendly young man, although he could be rather stubborn and naive. He was born to a well-to-do lower noble family within Ishgard, but unlike many nobles of his birth and higher, Lancefer was concerned by the state of Ishgard and it's citizens. He shared much of his country's dislike of dragons, however. Lancefer was a man who did as he pleased and made no apologies, leading many within his house to be displeased with his conduct and not take him seriously. Lancefer was one who typically maintained a certain calm, and due to his quiet assertiveness, slightly stoic nature, and restraint, he had a tendency to keep his worries to himself.

Lancefer's unbridled curiosity and desire to develop more personal relationships with the people around him led him to initially engaging in dialogue with Verah when first he spotted her in Coerthas making deliveries to Camp Dragonhead.

Though Lancefer often clashed with Verah for what appeared to be an unfriendly attitude and impatience with his curiosity, Lancefer served as a foil to Verah as a person with an overabundant amount of patience and a talent for cold calculation over unruly sentiment. Though Verah initially disliked him for his persistent annoyances, she grew fond of him to the point of eventually falling in love with him.

Though he put up a brave front, Lancefer's isolation and previous feelings of loneliness was sometimes hinted in their exchanges.

Enemies

Though Verah has a tendency to push people away, she does not make it a habit to make enemies. There may be those who dislike her, but none save the Glearant family of Ishgard would she consider to be an actual enemy.

Story

Spoiler notice: The following contains spoiler information. Proceed at your own risk.

Verah lost her father when she was still an adolescent, being raised for much of her young adult life straight into adulthood by her mother and the rest of her clan. But the loss of her father made her realize her desire to leave the clan and see the world. With the permission of her clan, when she reached adulthood she set out for the City-State of Gridania.

Shortly after her arrival, Verah sought a job working for a trade and delivery company which delivered supplies to many different areas around Eorzea and other parts of the world. During one of these rare delivery excursions outside Eorzea, Verah was sent to deliver supplies to camps and outposts around Coerthas. It was during this time that Verah was approached by a young highborn Elezen nobleman whose curiosity had peaked upon laying eyes on her- as Ishgard possesses very few (to no) Miqo'te to speak of, and this Elezen noble had never before met a Miqo'te. Verah was initially unbothered by the man's questions, but over time the persistence and abundance of them eventually wore down Verah's patience. Her inquisitor, however, was either oblivious to or ignored the consistently annoyed expression she wore when he began his line of questioning.

Over time as the frequency in which delivery requests to Coerthas increased uncharacteristically, Verah requested someone take her place, asking instead to remain within Eorzea for her work. This, however, only resulted in her being requested by name for the deliveries to be made to Coerthas. Upon seeing her curious Elezen acquaintence again, the two clashed as Verah makes known her annoyance and displeasure with his overabundant questions and abuse of the delivery system merely to ask them.

Between the two, the Elezen noble managed to keep his calm as Verah only grew more angry. Seeing her fuming anger, the nobleman smiled warmly and apologized for his overabundant curiosity. He introduced himself as Lancefer Glearant, firstborn son to his house. In their conversation that followed, Lancefer made known his desire to explore other parts of the world, Eorzea in particular as he had not ventured far beyond Ishgard and had never been outside Coerthas. As such, he requested to accompany Verah back to Gridania. Upon hearing his words, Verah hesitated, but eventually agreed under the condition he would not ask any more questions of her on their return excursion. Lancefer greeted this notion with laughter before agreeing to her own terms.

On their journey back, the two discussed their upbringing. Lancefer mentioned that he had a head for strategy much to the approval of his family, but grew up rather sheltered with no knowledge or skill in combat just as a number of other members of his house were. Verah brought up her own rather normal upbringing to contrast his, but mentioned that after a few short months in Gridania she had developed an interest in becoming an adventurer. This admission from Verah sparked an idea in Lancefer who, upon arriving in Gridania, wrote a letter home explaining to his family that he wished to learn to fight in order to help Ishgard. And he wanted most to learn the combat styles found in Gridania, Ul'Dah, and Limsa Lominsa. His family, used to Lancefer's unusual methods of going about things (and generally going against what they would normally consider good etiquette for an Ishgardian and future head of house), reluctantly allowed his decision. Lancefer shortly thereafter joined the Conjurer's guild, and Verah soon followed with quitting her deliveries and joining the Archer's guild. It was around this time that the two met Revin, who was an ex-Wood Wailer seeking to join the Adventurer's guild. All three signed up at the Adventurer's guild only days after having met, and began killing weak monsters left and right, earning reputation and running missions for the people of Gridania.

A fortnight later, Verah and Lancefer had fallen very deeply in love with one another in which Lancefer confessed to falling for her only months after hounding her with questions, and Verah had only recently begun to fall in love with him. It was only a handful of months later when Lancefer asked Verah to marry him under a full moon at a Gridanian festival, to which Verah readily agreed. The two spent that night dancing and celebrating their engagement under the stars.

Many months had passed when Lancefer asked Verah to accompany him to meet his family in Ishgard, a rare privilege as foreigners are not typically tolerated in Ishgard. Verah admitted to being nervous, but did agree to meet his family. And so only a few weeks later, the two set out for Ishgard. On the journey there, Lancefer confides in Verah that spending his time with her adventuring, learning to fight, and becoming familiar with the people in Gridania were some of the happiest days he has experienced in a long time. So he tells her that he isn't sure when, but he intends to announce to his family in the near future that he intends to step down from his position as the future head of house and relinquish that honor to his younger brother, Aurifort. Yet he did not want to do it immediately, as he wanted to be sure everything would be fine when he did. Verah, naturally, assumed that this meant arranging a smooth transition of influence and power from one sibling to the next. But when she spoke about Lancefer's decision, she offered her support.

Arriving at Ishgard, Verah is met with distrusting stares and even some many piercing glares while others avoid her gaze completely. Verah feels completely alienated from the rest of Ishgardian society, and in the back of her mind feels glad that Lancefer had decided to leave Ishgard to live with her in Eorzea. Yet when the two arrive at the home, a large congregation of Lancefer's family was present. Lancefer had called the family together for their announcement, yet Verah's presence was treated with some shock and quite a few members present were a bit alarmed that a foreigner was in their home.

Lancefer took this opportunity to wrap his arm around his bride and announce their engagement, and explained that a future bride to an Ishgardian may as well be Ishgardian as well. The initial reaction to this announcement was one of outrage from many members, while others voiced their prime concerns. After those voices finally settled, others reasoned with others and voiced their support. Once these voices were heard, the concern and anger seemed to die down. Lancefer's mother, who was merely pleased Lancefer had found someone to cherish, had set to asking their cook to provide a large meal for everyone in celebration. Meanwhile, Lancefer's father who was a bit unsettled by his son's decision, but not entirely against it, asked his manservant to provide wine for everyone.

After the meal, Verah was pulled away from Lancefer and the main body of the party to the sitting room where many older and more distant members of Lancefer's family were gathered. They questioned Verah with many prying, and even unsettling questions that made her blood boil. Verah did attempt to control her temper, as these were members of Lancefer's family and it was supposed to be a happy occasion. Yet the last straw for Verah was when these men who shared blood with Lancefer set to speaking ill of him with sneers and snarls on their face. Verah erupted with a fountain of words to rebuff them and their harsh words, even blurting out Lancefer's intent to relinquish his claim to the title of head of house in her defense of him to these men. In her anger, she stormed from the room and through the house, out into the Ishgardian street. But not before she met eyes with Lancefer and saw the mixture of pride, hurt and, the most concerning-- fear, in his face.

Lancefer followed Verah out into the street, but did not speak of her outburst. Instead, he made the suggestion that they immediately head for their home in Gridania.

Meanwhile, certain members of the main family were displeased with the sudden announcement of Lancefer's abdication as well as his marriage to a common Miqo'te girl. As far as they were concerned, Verah was a corruptive influence and by marrying her Lancefer would besmirch the family name and bring dishonor to their family. They could not have that, and so they gave the orders to assassinate Verah and should Lancefer get in the way, to do away with him. Killing one or the other would ultimately accomplish the same goal, even if it wasn't going to be the exact outcome they would prefer.

Verah and Lancefer had reached the Twelveswood near Gridania when they were ambushed by the Glearant family assassins. The assassins announce that they are after Verah, and for the young lord to step aside so they can kill his pet. Instead of stepping aside, Lancefer grabs Verah's hand and the two run deep into the Black Shroud, into some of the densest parts of the forest where pursuit would be difficult. Along the way, Verah had lost grip on Lancefer's hand and the two had gotten separated. Instead of remaining out in the open, Verah found a small hole under a tree to climb into and hid there. She remained there even as Lancefer returned for her, calling her name in the distance.

Lancefer was found by the assassins and restrained from running again. He was questioned to where Verah was hiding, and promised to be released should he tell them. If he didn't, they had orders to kill him for interfering and it didn't matter to them which they killed. Lancefer refused to speak, already figuring out by their words that it was his life or her's. Though he did not know where she was, he refused to tell them that much and merely allow them to think he was simply not going to tell them. Which worked, they assumed he refused to speak and slit his throat.

Verah had no knowledge of this transpiring, yet after many hours had passed and all was quiet, Verah crawled out from her hole under the tree and set out to find Lancefer in the hope she'd find him alive and well. But alive and well is not how she found him. His body was crumbled and bloody, laying in a drying pool of his own gore on the ground. Verah ran to him and rolled him onto his back, calling his name, his body already beginning to go stiff with rigor mortis.

295vf4p.png

As she had rolled him over, the silver pendant of four wings behind a sword he always wore fell from his neck due to a broken clasp. And from his jacket fell a neatly folded and was sealed letter, to which Verah opened with shaky hands. Within the contents of the letter, Lancefer wrote how happy he had been that Verah had agreed to marry him. He once again addressed his intent to abdicate his position as future head of his house, and explained the necessity for keeping this intention secret. He wrote that certain members of his family would do anything to see that neither his marriage to Verah nor his relinquishment of responsibilities would come to pass, and until he could assure their safety he didn't want to announce the latter announcement until he was certain there was nothing they could do to stop any of it. But he knew that for the most part, they would accept Verah as his bride so at the very least he wanted to do that right. And meet Verah's mother the following week. He wrote how nervous the idea made him, and wrote his hopes that Verah's mother would approve of him just as he was sure his own mother would approve of her. In his final sentence, he told Verah how much he loved her and looked forward to their life together. Beyond that, tears had already begun to fall upon the parchment Verah held. Dropping the letter, Verah buried her face in her hands and cried until sunset had turned to darkness.

When she finally wept her tears dry, she walked in the direction of Gridania with only the cool night breeze to stir her senses, Lancefer's silver pendant dangling from a clenched fist.

OOC Notes

Afterthought

I put a lot of information into this character wiki, yet it remains far from complete. Though I've included rather detailed insight to Verah's backstory here, there is still more that may be added to the history of her character as she develops through writing and role-play. If for whatever reason you choose to use a rumor to inspire RP between Verah and another character, just let me know. If that rumor involves Revin, please be sure to look him up as he is not a random character I created for Verah's backstory like Lancefer is.

OOC I'm a very friendly person, and I'm very open to friendships. But I would ask that you keep in mind what you've read about Verah in this wiki. While I am a friendly person, Verah is not and I would like for those who RP with me to know the distinction between OOC and IC. I'm not always in the game, so if you want to reach me you can reach me by PM or send me an ask on Tumblr. Lastly, if I offend you or say something that bothers you I won't know how you feel about it and I won't be able to make things right. So please let me know if something bothers you.

For my RP preferences, please feel free to check my user wiki.

Character Tropes

A character trope is a recognizable element of a story that defines or conveys information about a character. They are typically used to define a character as a device such as their role in the overall plot. There are also characterization tropes which define a character's personality or motivations. In this particular section, I wanted to analyze the latter to help people better understand Verah's character.

Broken Bird Once seeing herself as something of an aspiring hero to the people of Gridania and Eorzea as a whole, until a tragic event shattered her faith in just about everything.

Tsundere If someone gets close enough, she will start being a tsuntsun or 'harsh' element to the Tsundere in an effort to push them away.

Introversion Prefers working alone or, if she has to work with someone, in a small group. She hates crowds and would not be the leader by choice.
