The Cradle of Misery

During one of Garlemald's many conquests, a Prefect by the name Janus Keldren found a burned down home near the side of a mountain. In said home he found a baby Miqo'te, wrapped in a red blanket. Janus contemplated what to do with the child. By Garlean protocols, he could either leave it to die, or have it sent to be raised as a soldier. But Janus thought otherwise. He had recently become widowed, his wife having died during labor, and his child dying with her. Janus was not a superstitious man, but seeing this orphaned babe, somehow so healthy, wrapped in a blanket the same color as his nation's flag... he could not help but think it was some form of providence. Janus took the child as his own, naming her Vesma, the name he had already chosen for the daughter he had lost.

During the early years, Vesma was cared for by a Garlean nanny at Janus' estate. Janus would come visit as often as he could, always delighted to see his adoptive daughter. She was equally joyful every time her father was home, never leaving his side until the moment he was gone. He often told her the story of how he found her, embellishing it like a fairy tale.

Vesma received the best education available, though Janus kept her out of any academy. Vesma knew little of the world outside of the Keldren estate. Tutors and trainers came to the estate to educate her. Upon Janus' wishes, Vesma began martial training early, specializing with swords, although she was taught how to wield all manner of weapon, from the bow to the gunblade. The older Vesma became, the more her education focused on physical training. It was a slow gradual transition, all carefully calculated. The goal was to fill Vesma's mind with knowledge early, while developing basic muscle memory at first. Her education was enough to make her acceptable in Garlean society, while her physical training was way above average for a girl her age. Vesma was resilient. She sought to make Janus proud. She always gave her all, no matter the challenge. In her blinding love for her adoptive father, she couldn't see that as time progressed, she was being trained to be nothing but an obedient living weapon. Then again, if anyone was to point this out, she wouldn't have cared. It was her father's wishes, and she would comply. In her eyes, he could do no wrong.

Willful Servitude

At age 16, Janus took Vesma with him. From this moment on she seldom left his side. He took over training her. It was also at this time that the magitek experiments began. Janus infused Vesma's left eye with a telemetry technique, allowing him to see through her eye at will. Other attempts to enhance her body weren't so successful, such as the attempt to increase her physical abilities through an infusion of magic. This process was an excruciating experience, one which only marginally enhanced her strength, but more notably bleached parts of her black hair. Other experiments included the attempt to make her immune to elemental magicks. This experiment also ended in partial failure. She became quite resistant to fire magicks, and nearly immune to lower forms of lighting magicks. Although resistant to damage from these sources, the pain was only slightly dulled. Ice magick still affected her normally, along with wind and earth.

Vesma was always a willing participant of these experiments. Her loyalty to Janus was unwavering, and had he asked her to jump into a furnace, she would have without question. It wasn't a lack of will, but rather this was her will. She would do anything that would make Janus happy.

Janus was transferred to the VIIth legion by the time Vesma was 20. She, of course, was by his side as the battle for Eorzea unfolded. Although an extraordinary warrior, Vesma was not officially a member of the military, acting instead as Janus' personal bodyguard and operative. She had no rank, which meant she didn't have to follow anyone's orders but Janus'. Janus used Vesma as a scout, an assassin, and his personal guard during the whole campaign. It was during this time that Vesma was given the nickname “Crimson Shade”. Vesma seldom spoke to anyone other than Janus, unless it was absolutely necessary.

During the Battle of Carteneau, Vesma lost all that had meaning to her. Janus died upon the unleashing of Bahamut. Having been incapable of protecting him, Vesma felt responsible for her father's death, though all self-loathing was burned in the flames of her hatred. Eorzea was to blame, and all its inhabitants had the blood of her father in their hands. Some stories still tell of the wrath of a miqo'te in the ravaged fields of battle. As everyone ran, she charged on, fearless, as though possessed by a death wish. As Bahamut unleashed his final attack, a man tackled Vesma into cover. Having lost her father and being denied a death in battle, Vesma was left with no purpose. She felt a mixture of anger and gratitude to the man who had saved her. Angelous was his name. Vesma parted ways with him after the battle. Having no military rank, Vesma had no contingency after Janus' death. She continued to work on her own, mainly scouting and every now and then taking out high ranking members of the Grand Companies of Eorzia. Vengence was still a strong motivation, and although it wasn't really the Eorzian's fault, she felt better knowing she was at least carrying out the same line of work her father often asked of her. Eventually she learned of the XIVth Legion, and she began to deliver her scouting reports to them. Weather they chose to follow them or not was not something she cared about. She was working and that was all that mattered. It wasn't long until she heard mention of Angelous again. Vesma abandoned all her self-appointed work to stalk the man that had saved her life. She watched him in battle and in his daily life. At first she had no reasoning behind it, but as time passed, she realized that he was the obvious answer. She needed a new charge, and she owed him her life. The man was a versatile warrior, like her. She did not know if he would have use for her, but she didn't care. If he had no use for her, she would make herself useful.

Personality

Because of her upbringing and racial traits, Vesma is not very fond of being vocal to those she doesn't know. This isn't because of shyness, but more her not seeing a point in conversing with strangers unless absolutely necessary.
