In every culture, in every world there is a narrative passed down between generations – a treacherous tale spun by the tongues of elders to keep wild-eyed children in line. It is a tale of darkness, a tale of balance and the consequences of distancing one’s self from the good of man. Monsters. Demons. Creatures born of the Void; their hearts consumed with nefarious wants.

All men are born with the capacity for good and evil; their hearts poisoned with a single spec of darkness. It is up to the soul, the mind to protect the fragility of one’s heart – to ensure that one never strays from the path of what is good in this world. The darkness does not leave, it is never cleansed… always there to taunt man with wickedness; lying, cheating, reaching beyond one’s grasp… To resist, to remain pure of intent is to keep one’s heart bright and full. To submit, to relinquish one’s soul to despair… it is a heinous act and a promise of an eternal prison. The body decays with every malevolent act until one becomes so hideous… so corrupt that the only Death awaits them.

The accounts for these fables varies from one region to the next, from one clan to another, but their message is always the same: remain true to the good of man or become a hideous, gnarled monster. But what of those who are not taught such tales in their adolescence? What of those who find their soul teetering, their scales uneasy and then tragedy strikes, forcing that innocence to careen into a blackened hole from which there is no reprise? The answer to that resides in the tarnished heart of the creature known publicly as Vitani Solei, the Mottled Fox of Hingashi; a creature born in sin – bearing the weight of her mother’s transgression across her very flesh.

There are few sights as unremarkable as the Ivory Fox of Hingashi when one comes face-to-face with the four-foot nine-inch Au Ra woman whose pale, beige scales are entwined with midnight counterparts – the sins of her Mother and the physical damnation of that unholy union between Raen nobility and Xaela savagery. While those who knew the girl before her union with the kitsune spirits of the wild saw nothing more than a creature, a child whose presence among the living was a testament to the guardianship and prowess of her armored guardian – a man who could be no more than two or three years her senior.

Tawny flesh, blanketed in the quintessential beige scales of her mother… she could have been one of the proper women of Othard, a true Eastern beauty; but the world has long forgotten the stunning visage that lay tucked in secrecy beneath the ornate kitsune mask now officially integrated into her appearance. It is a complimenting embellishment to the opulent overcoat whose bottom half is comprised solely of nine separate tails – large, imposing appendages whose origins are occasionally the talk of scholars and curious foreigners. Their appearance is easily regarded as foxes, but the size alone would suggest something a great deal larger than those found in the wilds.

For those brave (or careless) enough to approach the caustic creature whose guarded visage is often filled with venom and judgement, there is a hum to the air around her. An electricity that practically clings to the woman’s flesh and regalia. It is almost tangible, that power which emanates from the diminutive Au Ra woman. To some, such an influence is enticing… a quiet beckon that prods at the very depth of their mind, they soul… luring man to her side for a glimpse at the future, their future. To others, such power is startling and cause for great concern… that one woman would live with such radiance… The real fear lies however, with those gifted with Aetherial Sight – the ability to view one’s aura. For them, the short-statured woman is encased in an acerbic cloud of combined spirits. Hundreds of lives given, stolen, claimed for her own – to bolster her own strengths and protect her weaknesses. She is a boiling pot of Aether and at its center, like a diamond amongst coal resides the woman’s own… so small and fragile. Misleading, perhaps?
