Short History

Life seems to happen around Zha'li... and that suits him just fine.
Youngest son of his small tribe's matron, Zha'li has lived a life of little expectation and uncomplicated routine. Highly sensitive to the voices of the Elementals, he was often left alone and without much tribal duty, wandering the Shroud as the wind seemed to guide him. He did grow to be quite the adept fisher, pulling fish from the streams and lakes within the wood for his family.
Through his wandering he also befriended a young sylph, rare as it was to find one who was curious enough about a young 'Walking One' to come out to play. The two weren't inseparable, but they became good friends, spending time together whenever Zha'li's wanderings drew him that way.
When the Calamity hit Zha'li, like everyone else, had his life and routine shaken. Though his tribe came through the disaster with few severe wounds or casualties, the sheer destruction left Zha'li shaken, the pain the Elementals felt still ringing in his ears. He stayed with his tribe while they healed, following them as they became even more reclusive.
Once satisfied his kin were safe, Zha'li left to wander once again, this time not restricting himself to the Shroud. He needed to escape the pain of the forest, willing to serve as the eyes and ears of the Elementals elsewhere. Upon leaving he also caught sight of his sylph friend, now purple in hue and in service to a primal.
Though travel has eased his heart, Zha'li still seeks more to take his mind off the troubles of his home.

Personality

Personality: Seeming relatively easy going compared to the brooding stereotype of the Keepers of the Moon, Zha'li is amiable to most conversation. He's one who would rather listen than speak, out of habit and a residual insecurity when dealing with those of other races. Kind at heart, Zha'li has an easy laugh for those who engage in jokes or light hearted banter, and patience around all manner of eccentric personalities. He is difficult to anger, though by no means impossible to disturb. Hurts and annoyances are kept close inside.
There is a certain distance Zha'li feels around others, even those of his tribe. Though he is not overwhelmed by the thoughts and emotions he feels from the elementals, he's ever aware and listening for them. As a result of this, at times he may seem preoccupied, or even disinterested in the conversations of those around him. Still, for those who do earn his trust and attention, Zha'li is a loyal companion who can be depended upon. Possessed of an ever curious mind that seems to be bottomless when it comes to new lands and tales to explore, he's almost always willing to go on an adventure, even if the safety of such a venture is dubious.

  • Zha'li has become quite the fishercat, and wonders if there are even greater catches yet to find.

Relationships & Affiliations

NPC affiliations:

  • The Fisherman's Guild - Zha'li has spent countless hours with those at the Fisherman's Bottom, and most of his wanderings to Limsa end up with him at least visiting there.
  • Brugaire Consortium - Through the Fisherman's Guild, Zha'li had performed a few jobs for the Consortium.
  • Prilxia - Zha'li's now tempered Sylph friend. Not as estranged a relation as one might think.
  • Cinnwhil - Zha'li's faithful chocobo.

Rumors/Idle Chatter

Easily Overheard/Learned:

  • "Found him catching a nap in the stalls again. The other chocobo don't mind him and his, and he's always happy to repay the stay with a mend to an injured wing or a sprained foot. Don't see why he doesn't ask to sleep inside though... we've told him there are spare beds..." -Chocobohand, Bentbranch Meadows
  • "Ah! My favorite fishercat! Why you ask? Well yes, the fish he catches are always very nice, often high quality! But his prices, you see... so low. Too low? Well I won't be the one to tell him that."
  • "Zha'li? Why would you ask about him? He's a waste of space in any tribe. If he'd been in ours, we'd have put those ears to good use!" - Keeper of the Moon

Sometimes Overheard/Learned:

  • "No way can you depend on him! Just the other day my wagon was hit by Earth Sprites, and you know what he did? He sat there and kept fishing! I KNOW he saw me, I know he heard me shouting for help! Why was my wagon attacked? N-never mind that! We're talking about him!" - Ul'dahn Merchant (totally legitimate)
  • "How is he doing? I wish he'd taken up our offer and let us teach him. The effect of the Calamity on the shroud hit many of the Hearers very hard, and without their training I wonder how they would have managed. He seems to be just fine, but I do wonder." - Conjurer, Gridania

Rarely Overheard/Learned:

  • "I've seen him lurking in the Sylphlands while on patrol, spending time with a Sylph. Not one of the Little Solace sylphs... one of the other ones. Sometimes he's chased away... but not as often as I'd be comfortable with." - Wood Wailer Sentry, The Hawthorne Hut

Quirks

  • Zha'li has been sensitive to the voices of the elementals all of his life, and has a tendency to listen for them over those right in front of him at times.
  • Though not a sly cat by any stretch, if it means possibly avoiding an argument (or avoiding a topic he'd rather not speak on), Zha'li isn't beyond pretending he wasn't listening to those around him.

OOC Information

A lot of inspiration for Zha'li's abilities come from Sylphie and her mother of the Conjurer quest line (though hardly so tragic). Had he been raised in Gridania and given formal conjury training, he likely would have been recommended to become a Hearer.
I'm a married lady IRL, so if the gender mismatch between me and my male Miqo'te bothers you I'm sorry.
Main Classes/Jobs: CNJ/WHM (45), ACN/SMN/sch (35), FSH (50)
Progression: I've yet to clear the main 2.0 storyline (can't yet go to the Isles of Umbra either). I'd originally planned to finish the game using WHM, though in raising SMN for some cross class skills, it's possible I might switch to SMN for progression content. Healing is stressful! We shall see...
