Gaius van Balsar, Legatus of the XIVth Legion, objected strenuously. Eorzea was to be conquered, not destroyed. Such loss of life and resources was as stupid as it was cruel, but he was overruled by Emperor Solus. Project Meteor would be implemented with all due dispatch and secrecy. van Balsar committed treason by assisting, if subtly, the heroes of Eorzea with information and resources to use against Darnus in preventing this Calamity from occuring. Weeding out sympathizers amongst the legions deployed to the continent, he (through intermediaries and other deceptive techniques) fed them enough information to turn them against the Empire entirely, defectors due to their consciences. Amongst these defectors was Aeliana Quirinus, a half-Garlean young woman. | Gaius van Balsar, Legatus of the XIVth Legion, objected strenuously. Eorzea was to be conquered, not destroyed. + | Aeliana Quirinus didn't have the most auspicious start to life. Her mother, a Tribune of the VIIth Legion, found herself having custody of a handsome young man from Sharlayan, a powerful spell-caster that had for several years resided on the 'barbarian' continent of Eorzea in order to study the magics of its beast-tribes. Deciding to reward herself for her victory over such lesser people as these, she made him her lover. She was beautiful enough that it wasn't the worst fate the member of a conquered populace could have, but she cared little for what he wanted and was more than willing to threaten not only himself but those he cared for with nightmarish things if he wouldn't become what amounted to a sex slave. Whether she was looking to take a break from the military, wanted to breed a magical Garlean, or simply was to lost in her rapacious passions to take contraceptives, the Tribune became pregnant. Nine months later, Aeliana was born.

+ | As a daughter of a military officer and native-born Garlean, Aeliana was a Citizen from the moment she was born., but this fact brought little joy to her life. When her 'family' was rotated back to Islabard, her father ran afoul of a band of particularly unpleasant noble youths and was killed. Of course, since he was only a slave, her mother was compensated with gil and the youths were conscripted into the military...as military police in Garlemald itself. Though only a child, it was quite clear to her that her father had meant nothing to her mother or anyone else she knew. Fortunately, her mother cared enough at least to give her a proper education and kept her fed and clothed.

+ | Her youth and teenaged years were nothing but misery, surrounded by people that were at best apathetic and at worst attempting to harm her for the perceived impurity of her blood, but she (inspired by her mother) strongly believed in the meritocratic society Garlemald purported to be, as well as the danger that the Primals posed to the safety of Hydaelyn and its people. As such, she had her mother enter her into a military academy as soon as she was old enough. Upon graduation, she joined up with the XIVth legion under the legendary and deeply respected Gaius van Baelsar, who was famed for his lack of care for bloodlines and his appreciation for an individual's talents. With the invasion of Ala Mhigo, she worked hard to ensure that the conquered populace was as well-treated as possible, and any rapists on either side were quickly and publicly executed or turned into slave laborers so long as she had the authority to influence the decisions.

+ | Unfortunately, her sympathetic behavior gained her few friends and many enemies amongst her supposed comrades, and her very nature as a Garlean occupier was far more important to the Ala Mhigans than her even-handed enforcement of law and her outright protection of their people. Many a Garlean in this position would have found themselves with their throat cuts some dark night, but her fate (while perilous) was not so immediately fatal as that. Instead, she was earmarked by Gaius van Baelsar to be one of his unwitting messengers to the Eorzean Alliance in his efforts to sabotage Project Meteor. She was among many who smuggled information and defectors to the Alliance through a network of cutouts and veiled informants, all organized by the somewhat-rogue Legatus, and eventually ended up fighting alongside the Ishgardian contingent at the Battle of Carteneau.

− | Aeliana | + | Eventually forced to flee from Ala Mhigo after being framed (ironically, for taking bribes from Ala Mhigan citizens, as opposed to the actual treason she had committed), Aeliana tried to make her way in Gridania. However, despite her status as a defector and a former informant, Gridania had been hit hardest of the southern city-states during the war with The Empire. Despite the leadership and example of Kan-E-Senna, the people and protectors of Gridania made it clear that they had no interest in letting one of their former enemies live amongst them, no matter what she had or hadn't done over the course of her career. Attempts to find common ground, and even helping fight against several marauding bands of Garlean legionnaires that had turned to banditry, did nothing to improve either their opinion of her or their willingness to tolerate her presence. Rejected by no small portion of the people she had risked her life and lost everything she had ever known in order to help, she began to wander. Living off the land, entering settlements only when she had no choice, she began making her way south towards Thanalan. She hoped that the mercenary inhabitants of the Golden City would be more interested in the services she could offer rather than the blood in her veins. |

+ | While the people of Ul'dah did not reach her with burning torches and pitchforks, they weren't exactly eager to see her either, by and large. Though they had suffered far less than their Gridanian and Ala Mhigan neighbors had, they had lost countless sons and daughters in battle with the Empire all the same, and they now had a refugee crisis in the form of hundreds of Ala Mhigans seeking the prosperity and opportunity of which their city so proudly boasted. However, and fortunately(?) for Aeliana, their pragmatic greed outweighed their contempt and disgust, if only barely. As a result, she was in fact able to find the new life she had been striving for: doing scut work for the Syndicate.
+ | The lowest-paying and highest-risk jobs, those were hers. The jobs that nearly no one else was willing to take, and anyone who was as desperate was far less equipped. No doubt the people taking advantage would have liked her to be sufficiently cowed and collared to sign her life away, but a veteran of suffering such as herself was far more capable of living frugally and harshly than they expected. Refusing to whore herself out or compromise on what jobs she would perform, she raised her reputation and network of contacts continuously over the next five years, until she was finally secure enough to choose her own jobs at will. Now, she lives in Ul'dah between contracts, a Soldier of Fortune with at least one woman in every settlement on the continent. Committed to no one and hollowed out by years of solitude, trying in vain to connect to strangers when she can barely connect to herself.
