♦ History

Background

As Reinar Paciscor, the son of a wealthy family born in a Garlean conquered territory, Reinard was expected to follow through with his family's wishes (Most specifically, his father's) to take up on their trading business and carry it through the next generation. To encourage it, Reinard was often taken in business trips and even sent along shipping convoys as they traveled their routes, in order to arm him with the knowledge necessary. These travels also served to show him the world beyond his place of birth, leading to Reinard develop interests of his own: In a world filled with magic, wonders and mysteries, he wished nothing more than to travel the different continents and seek answers to his many questions. Reinar had been born with an above average sensitivity to aetheric currents, capable of feeling them clearly as a subtle 'breeze', or visibly seeing them and feeling its touch if the aether was particularly thick or disturbed in a determined area. As expected, his family did not indulge in his interests, refusing to support his study of anything not related to the family and their investments.

Fortunately for Reinar, he had others who were willing to support him. Lucan Iel Sidiatoris took a personal interest in the young man's wishes from very first moment they met. Their meeting one of chance, Lucan was conducting business with Reinar's father, which an uninterested Reinar had been witness to. The youth's lack of presence in their repeated meetings, but complete devotion to a book outside of them led to the two exchanging words, and eventually, ideas. Lucan was supportive of Reinar's academic ambitions and even spoke in their favor with the Paciscor family. Reinar's father, bothered by the insistence on the subject, not just from his own son but now also from a stranger, threatened Reinar with the repercussions of his choices. This time however Reinar did not back down and declared his departure from the family's business. His father's response was true to his promises: Reinar was immediately disowned and ejected from his home and his family's graces, midst shouts and curses, threatened if he were to return. Not wishing to leave the young to fend for himself, and perhaps with a dose of interest of his own, Lucan offered to take Reinar into his wing and support his study and research.

For years Reinar attended to a Garlean academy and studied aether, and aetheric equations, eventually becoming apprentice to a wandering scholar from Eorzea whom Lucan had hired. His tutor however also advised him that books and scrolls alone did an academic make. He encouraged his young charge to better use his enthusiasm for academic pursuits and seek out information through out the realms, conduct his own experiments using what he had learned and eventually make records of his own, that he may eventually publish books on his own.

Around the same time, Lucan (now calling himself Lucaniel Clarke) returned to Garlemald, and invited Reinar to travel with him back to Eorzea, where aether in the land was richer and where one could better develop their magic skills. Not just that, but Eorzea was recovering from what they were calling the Calamity, an event that saw the appearance of a great beast who brought chaos and destruction, but also seemingly poisoned the land leading to reports of aetheric corruption spreading. Being the perfect opportunity to expand on his studies, Reniar accepted, departing with Lucaniel to the city-state of Ul'dah.

Ul'dahn Adventures and the R&R

When Reinar arrived on Ul'dah, at the time a man of twenty five, he did so under his new identity of Reinard Ackerman. He set up a small shop within the city-state where to conduct his research, doubling it as a place of healing; a clinic in other words. There Reinard resided for but a few weeks, treating the injured and the sick, becoming fairly known, specially among Ul'dahn refugees for his 'pay what you can' policy of service. While it did not generate much profit, it certainly brought good will to the city's newest healer. This lasted until an incident between the Brass Blades and a member of Lucaniel's Underworld organization had Reinard and his clinic caught in the crossfire. Against his better judgement Reinard chose his loyalty to Lucan, despite not being officially part of his underworld. Though they were able to escape prosecution and protect Lucaniel's interests, thanks in no small part to Roswyn Valhuri, a Miqo'te business associate of Lucaniel's, the Brass Blades who still suspected Reinard's involvement caused great damage to his clinic and belongings.

After the incident, feeling it was in his best interest to leave the Ul'dah for a while, Reinard planned a trip to Gridania, there to join the Botanist's guild in search of knowledge to further his research. It was on this trip that he ran into a pair of Miqo'te, I'yato Khai and Piri Suzu. The former had been injured during a fight against a Garlean scouting party who ventured too deep into the Black Shroud, and although Reinard no longer possessed a clinic, he was quick to offer his assistance. His aid of I'yato quickly sprung a friendship between him and the two Miqo'te, who upon learning of his academic interests invited him to join their Free Company, Eorzea Unearthed, a group dedicated to research and reclamation of Eorzea's past and present mysteries. After constant invites and after meeting many of the members of this company, including their leader, Corbi Slater, Reinard decided to accept their invitation, partaking in a small 'welcome' celebration in Limsa Lominsa.

Tera and the Glowing Stone

Though Reinard had been welcomed into the Eorzea Unearthed, his more quiet nature highly contrasted the one of his fellow Company members, with a few rare exceptions. On top of that, Reinard was determined to keep both his past, and previous associations to Lucan and his posse a secret, having determined that both worlds were meant to be kept apart. Those two facts contributed for Reinard to maintain some distance from the other members of the company on most occasions. Because of that he would seldom visit Ul'dah, let alone meet Lucaniel nor mention him to his comrades. The few times he managed 'safely visit' his past associates, he would spend them catching up on events, either with Lucan himself or Roswyn, whom had apparently grown to become more than just a mere business partner of Lucan's, much to Reinard's chagrin.

Despite living this 'duality', the young man was eager to join Unearthed's when a meeting was called, its subject being the discovery of artifacts found in a recent visit to a place called "Invisible City". Hosted in the Observatorium in Coerthas, it was during this meeting Reinard interacted the most with his colleagues, trading ideas and sometimes even openly criticizing what he believed to be unfounded conclusions. Above all he interacted with a young female Hyur named Tera Stone, whom like him had an unusual amount of interest in an artifact labeled "Glowing Stone". To Reinard, the object pulsed with an aetheric 'ping' that grew in strength with each second, with no apparent cause. It was only when Tera suddenly and unexpectedly interacted with the artifact in the midst of all of their deliberations, putting up a bright display of lights that burned the tip of her fingers and drained her of some energy that he realized the cause. Despite his interest in what had occurred, Reinard still lectured the woman in her recklessness as it had caused her injury, mild as it appeared. He healed her and kept a close eye on her through out the meeting and afterwards, when she requested the artifact be lent to her for further study. After the meeting, Reinard was approached by the meeting's host, Ereshkigal Atropos, whom noticed Reinard's apparent interest and concern for Tera, and asked him to join Tera's investigation to keep an eye on her. Reinard, who already planned to do just that, readily complied.

The investigation, as it turned out, involved less study into the artifact itself, and more into Tera and her past: She revealed that she too possessed an unusual amount of sensitivity to aether, though hers proved to be even stronger than Reinard, almost debilitating so when it came to aetheric currents of a certain strength. While Reinard felt them as a breeze against his body, Tera had seemingly been able to see them as vibrant rays of light crossing the air and linking the land together. The Glowing Stone, as Tera reported, was somehow related to her and pulsed with energy in response to her presence, stronger to the point it pained her to even be in its presence. The pair spent a whole night discussing her past and possible connection, only studying the stone on the next day.

Their experiment, which involved Tera once more interacting with the artifact, led to an even more violent display than the one that occurred in Coerthas, with the stone hovering above the Wanderer's Palace, east of Camp Bronze Lake, lighting the sky and pulsing with aetheric energy at such a high frequency that even Reinard was able to see it. It then proceeded to bombard the area with what looked like lightning bolts, forcing Tera and Reinard to flee the scene. Tera, exhausted from the interacting and their following flight, collapsed not long after, and Reinard made sure to carry her back to Limsa, but not before retrieving the Glowing Stone, which saw fit to 'follow' them, intercepting the pair on their way back to the Lominsan city state in the form of a sizable fireball. The artifact had undergone some physical changes through the event, and now provided them with new clues to follow, but Reinard had decided they had seen enough for the day.

Contract Termination and Worse News

Though Reinard and Tera's experiments had resulted in a very literal glowing success, the rest of the Eorzea Unearthed company found itself suffering from a serious management problem. Time and resources were being spent on routes and theories that did not pan out, frustrating both researchers and the company's administration. Backroom politics and discussions in regards to the company's goals only served to further stall any efforts of future research, however at least one last expedition to the Invisible City, place of origin of the Glowing Stone, was successfully funded before all activities came to a halt.

As a lowly researcher and relatively new member of the circle, Reinard heard little of what actually happened, yet one day he received a letter informing him of the termination of his contract, a sum of money for services rendered, and a notice that the research division of Eorzea Unearthed had been disbanded. Confused and upset to have been left in the dark, Reinard naturally contacted a few of its members, only to hear the same story from every one of them. But that wouldn't be the first piece of 'bad news' to reach Reinard, for when Lucan contacted him informing "it was time", he knew things were about to become much darker.

Lucaniel had, for a while since Reinard arrived, asked him to look into the subjects of increasing one's own aetheric power and the viability of achieving immortality through arcanic means. An ambitious design at best, and a challenge Reinard was willing to take. As it happened, it wasn't the first time Lucan had searched for something of the kind, but his specialties lied with the Void, and though ambitious, Lucaniel realized that dealing with the Void carried great risk to himself. Reinard's different field of study had provided Lucan with a possible alternative. Yet Reinard had a hard time discovering any sort of safe means to grant Lucan's requests, whose ambitious grew exponentially with time, and given the right push, overcame the man's better judgement. Still, Reinard's knowledge and skills would still prove useful to ensure nothing went wrong, and so Reinard was drafted to aid in Lucan's ritual to achieve immortality. Reinard opposed and advised caution, but in the face of Lucaniel's determination, Reinard failed to get through to him. Further more he was even convinced that he was wrong, and Lucan had the right answers, blindly trusting the person whom he still owed so much to.

On the night of the ritual, the pair were joined by a shady figure, whom Reinard would later discover to be named 'Melfice'. Melfice had been the one to provide Lucan with the means to connect ot the void, which when coupled with Reinard's aetheric designs, promised a stable link to the Void through which Lucan could make his plight to Nald'Thal for the ultimate reward. But little went according to Lucan's plan, and though they had established a stable link to the Void, it did little but allow a nefarious entity from reaching through and capturing Lucan for his audacity to ask for powers that were not meant for him. With Melfice's aid, Reinard avoided the same fate and remained conscious enough to watch as Lucan's ambition turned into his own downfall, and as Lucan disappeared into nothing and the portal with the Void closed, all Reinard could think of was how stupid he had been, and how would he explain what happened to Roswyn.

Reinard and the Void, Round Two

Breaking the news of Lucan's disappearance to Roswyn was a heartbreaking task: For a while now Reinard had visited Ul'dah and the place where Roswyn resided, sometimes meeting Lucaniel, but mostly just encountering the Miqo'te. He knew of their relationship, one that seemed to waver between 'business only' to 'true endearment', as well as held the belief that Lucan never truly felt for Roswyn, but merely used her for what she was worth. Yet the Miqo'te clearly felt differently, so Reinard kept his distance and did not interfere. Reinard could not control the feelings blooming inside him, but he could reign in his actions and never act upon those feelings.

Forcing himself in such way came at a cost, like the gut wrenching pain the Hyurian felt at watching Roswyn break into tears over the news of Lucan's fate and the reasons behind it. Even as Reinard did not think the man worthy of her love, he couldn't deny that she had given it to him. Moved by guilt and to an extent, his own loyalty to his 'cousin', Reinard promised to rescue Lucaniel from the Void, and for the next week he worked tirelessly, day and night, studying at the Ossuary in Ul'dah where a collection of books on the Void was readily available for his needs. Research was not all he thought of, however, his mind readily recalling the sight of a teary Roswyn listening to his report on what had happened, a memory that brought sadness, which time turned into anger against Lucaniel: The man who had everything, from a successful business, charisma, power and a woman who loved him, only to risk it all away in a bid for immortality. Likewise, Reinard chastised himself for blindly trusting Lucan and his ambitions over his own beliefs and knowledge, a mistake that cost Reinard's belief on Lucaniel's judgement.

Yet despite the growing resentment for the man, he had made Roswyn a promise, to get Lucaniel back to her safe and sound, and at the end of the week, they were ready for it. Reinard was joined by Melfice once again, whose aid Reinard had managed to enlist only after agreeing to surrender a 'sip' of his own Aether, as well as after promising his actions were not born out of a selfish desire for immortality. Roswyn also joined Reinard's party, bringing along an old acquaintance called Darturu, a mercenary of sorts by all appearances. The three served as Reinard's backup as he once more opened a doorway to the Void, only this time they were protected by an energy field of Reinard's making, spared of the Void's influence and as well giving them a chance to fight back against whatever came their way. From the rear, Reinard directed their efforts as well as healed their injuries as the party fought against a single large demonic Voidsent and his summoned hounds, until vanquishing him entirely. With the way open, Reinard was able to retrieve Lucaniel, but as Melfice has forewarned, the man was no longer the same. Both inside and out, the Void had changed him almost entirely, though his mind seemed by all appearances, sound. He was able to speak and recognize his saviors, and his lucidity prompted Reinard to declare that their personal debt was settled, and that they were 'even'. Such declaration of 'independence' was both aimed at Lucan as well at himself, a way to tell himself that he was no longer bound to the man's will, now free to pursue his own interests.

Lucan also had some surprises of his own, revealing how much he had changed in an uncensored display of his ability to feed on the aether of another person. The monstrous display only served to reinforce that Lucan had not changed for the best, as well as reinforce his desire to protect Roswyn from such a man. Luckily for him, he would soon get the chance to.

♦ Appearance

Reinard is a tall man, with fair skin and complexion, fading brown hair and vibrant blue eyes. His hair is usually kept in a disheveled state, arranged by hand so it will not lay before his eyes of his spectacles. He tends to favor light clothes that do not impair movement, as well as elegant designs. Often seen with a book of some form on his person, and often seen reading said book.

♦ Personality Traits

Usually quiet, Reinard behaves in a calm and collected manner most of the time, and prefers locations and activities that reflect and benefit from such behavior, such as reading. A very logical person who seems to give great thought to every moment and action that he is to take, though he is not unkind or cold because of it. Indeed as a doctor he tends to display a kind and protective demeanor towards his patients, though some believe that is simple bedside manners.

Reinard's behavior 'blooms' during research of expeditions, where he displays a more enthusiastic persona, often speaking up in conversations related to the current research, able to go on talking for long periods of time about information, its meaning, his theories and such, a behavior that tends to annoy those who do not share of his own enthusiasm. The only thing that rivals his interest in the pursuit of knowledge, seems to be his interest in women; Often spying the beauties of Ul'dah and those that come to it for trade. If he's not at his clinic, he will likely be found in the Quicksand, keen eyes inspecting members of the fairer sex.

Reinard has a particular quirk involving adjusting his glasses on his bridge nose which is triggered by a number of factors.

Lucaniel Clarke – Cousin (Adopted) and benefactor. A man whom Reinard holds respect, and above all, a great degree of loyalty for, and is willing to cover for Lucaniel, despite having no interest in the man's Underworld organization, and at times a measure of distaste for the extreme actions he performs. Recent events have only served to show that Lucan's own ambition and thirst for power only serve to blind the man and hurt those close to him, leading to a measure of disgust from Reinard.
Nocturiel Blackthorne – Cousin (Adopted)
I'yato Khai – An energetic Miqo'te whom Reinard met during his first visit to Gridania. Her good nature and contagious enthusiasm sometimes sparks similar feelings inside the usually quiet Reinard.
Roswyn Valhuri – A sharp minded Miqo'te and associate of Lucan's. Being one of Reinard's first friends in Ul'dah, Reinard quickly took a liking to her, despite her most evident relationship to his cousin. Reinard has in turn elected to watch from the sidelines and make sure Lucan's more destructive tendencies do not bring harm to the woman.
Corbi Slater – While officially his Boss, Reinard still knows very little of the man to judge him on a personal level. None the less, through their brief moments of interaction, Corbi has shown to be trustworthy and well centered enough for Reinard to agree to work for him and his Free Company.
Tera Stone – A member of Eorzea Unearthed whose unusual connection to an ancient artifact quickly drew Reinard's attention. His curiosity towards her mysteries led to a still-developing personal interest that has yet to fully blossom. Though his interest seems purely academic, Reinard does display some concern for her health.
Melfice Vainchelon - A mysterious figure whom Reinard only knows by his first name. Though Reinard recognizes and respects the man's vast knowledge and experience in matters concerning the Void, the little contact the two have shared did little to build any form of trust in between them.
