A younger Reinard Ackerman

Backround

What can be said about Reinard Ackerman... Well for starters, it can be said that's not even his real name! I know I know, Sky Pirates are not at all stranger to aliases, but Reinard was not always a Sky Pirate. There was a time, in a past few care to consider, that he was known as Reinar Paciscor, the sole heir of the Paciscor family. The Paciscors are from Ilsabard, but they are not your common Garlean family, no. They are traders! And though traders are not members of the military and not known for their presence within Garlemald, Paciscor still wielded influence through their many deals with the influential of the Empire. And Reinar, he was to gain control of it all once his old man decided it was time.

But Reinar had a dreams of his own, dreams of magic, as one of the few in Ilsabard that could feel its flow and have it bend to his will. More importantly he dreamed of understanding it, of taking the reigns of his abilities and turning it into something grand. For that reason and others he left home, left his family, engaging in a journey of study and learning that would have him face many trials and struggles, before at long last landing him in Eorzea. Now... Eorzeans aren't quite fond of Garleans, a fact even the simplest of persons understands, and Reinard was as clever and sharp as they come. So when he stepped foot in Eorzean territory, a new man was born, a brand new face that would in time become known to many: To some he was a friend, an enemy to others. Lover; Ally; Villain; Thief; Pirate... Some even called him a fool. I? I prefer to call him by whom he became: Reinard Ackerman

Stories aren't necessarily in chronological order and some of the facts may be exaggerated.
On Aetheric Circuits
The following is a paper supposedly written by Reinard during his time in Eorzea. Details of the publication as well as its date are sketchy at best.
♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦

The basic principle behind arcanima is that it is aetherical equations and magic used to shape reality in accordance to the user's will. But few ever considered that those equations themselves might be shaped, and common knowledge says that these equations are best when written upon a flat surface, often the pages that compose a book or grimoire, but I always thought that to be limited.

Borrowing inspiration from relics of old Allag I considered the possibility that arcanima may be written on objects of many forms and shapes, as well as varying dimensions; A gauntlet, the fabric of clothing, a shield's plate. So long as the equation's geometry is properly transcribed within the varying shapes, anything can work as a medium for arcanima. But that is only the beginning.

Like magic foci, different materials can have influence over the magic cast through them. The right set of gemstones aligning a breastplate's armor may strengthen the durability of that metal beyond it could be acheived through simple hammer and anvil, and the type of fabric can better absorb the enchanted ink that serves as a conduit for aether to flow and shape the many shapes needed to cast a spell, and when applied that to a mage's robe, suddenly you have a man launching fireballs faster than most Thaumaturges.

That's what aetheric circuits are: Aetherical Equations transcribed into unorthodox mediums to very specific effects. They provide a number of advantages over the standard medium of using arcanima off of books, but there are also a number of disadvantages. The first of them is that every transcription is final. If you produce the wrong intended effect the whole item is practically unusable and it is best to sell it for scrap. The other issue is that books, for all of their impracticality, are a multilayered medium that can store hundreds of pages worth of equations and some of the most complex spells do make use of that multi-layer format, applying equation atop equation. Other mediums do not have that trait, at least most that I've experimented with. It also means you're locked to a few set of simple spells, depending on the kind of medium you're working with. Finally, it is not a simple process and easy to make mistakes, which brings us back to the first disadvantage.

I can't rightly claim to be a discoverer of this methodology. If anything I feel I am merely rediscovering it. As written above this takes inspiration from the few relics of old Allag that I've been able to study; Animatronics that defy comprehension, armor that is lighter than leather but sturdier than steel. All of these artifacts hold secrets that we can still barely glance into. Even Garlemald, who achieved its technological mastery through the study of these, have not fully mastered its making.

This idea is still, at best, at its infancy and I'll probably not be the one to fully master, if it is ever fully mastered. But I write this in hope that someone else will carry on the work afterwards. Attached to this intro are my notes, observations and results of several experiments I've worked on. Hope they will serve you well.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!

An Ul'dahn citizen once said... "Reinard Ackerman? The doctor? Yeah I know of him. Had a Free-clinic here in Ul'dah a long while. Then he traded up for a Free Company or another. Hah, Free-clinic to Free Company, doubt his services are actually free, though!"
An Ul'dahn citizen once said... "Every time I see that man he's wandering around the city in the company of some pretty broad. I guess women dig doctors. Specially ones with pretty faces..."

◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!

A Wood Wailer in Quarrymill once mentioned... "One time we had a problem with a large, vicious Coeurl. Then shows up here with a gun and two women and they hunt the beast down. I thought he was a hunter at first. It was only after I dropped his name in a visit to Ul'dah that I hear he's supposed to be a doctor. What kind of doctor goes around hunting dangerous animals!?"
An angry Ul'dahn said once... "He's a scumbag is what he is! On Starlight he courted an innocent girl in the middle of a ball. Took her away for a 'romantic walk under the moonlight' and you know what else comes after that! Later I hear she woke up and found she got robbed of her precious jewelry! Kid was devastated."
A member of the Brass Blades once remarked that... "He's not just a doctor, he's got connections--powerful people watching over his shoulder. Long ago we suspected he was covering for a thief in his so called 'Free-clinic'. One moment he was in our sights, the next we're told to back off."

◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!

A smuggler once let slip in a tavern that... "Don't know who this Paciscor arsehole is but he showed up here one time with a bunch of merchandise one day and sold it at a low price. Now get this; A lot of the stuff he sold just happened to be same stuff that was reported stolen when a caravan got raided up there in the northern woods."
An Underworld agent admitted that... "Where does he (Paciscor) hangs his coat? No idea meself! See he takes off in a different direction every time. Must have safehouses all over the place. Plus he's usually got that mask or goggles on, hard to recognize a man behind that."
A bystander Moraby Drydock Worker once witnessed that... "All I know is he shows up aboard an airship, four others aboard. They unload a bunch of boxes with the help of a few folks and then scamper faster than you can say 'Smugglers'. Don't know exactly what it was that was in them boxes, but I think I saw me some Garlean symbols on one of them!"

◢ Player Character Rumors - Feel free to add rumors of your own, true or untrue, just keep it IC!

Roswyn Valhuri happened to comment: "The way he pushes his glasses up his nose is just....absolutely endearing. It makes me hesitant to wonder how dark he might actually be inside..."
Risty Lowlight shared the following: "The doctor? He has a knack for irritating me, but I find his logical truth to be refreshing in this world of lies and deceit. I wouldn't trade the friendship with him for anything... Of course he won't know that.."
Eaubront Shopont had this to day: "He's a reasonable and agreeable man. Intelligent, skilled, level-headed... He's also fun to drink with. I trust his judgement."
Khyra Luriihn could only irritably exclaim: "THIS GUY."
Eira Carter has mentioned calmly: "He's quite charming; that smile hides a rather sharp knife."
Khoba Lhyr probably didn't take this very seriously, but said: "He's a know-it-all and too suave for his own good and really irritatingly charming and I'd definitely disembowel someone for him if needed. He's just awful and distressing and I really like him."

Direct Family or Extended

Julius Paciscor () ( NPC ) - Father
There are many stories out there where the man doesn't get along with his father, and this is, truth be told, just another case like that: Julius is a powerful merchant in the continent of Ilsabard, and wanted his son Reinar to stand in as the heir to that trade empire. Reinar had other plans for his future however and I'm sure you can guess the way the story ends. Julius considers Reinar Paciscor to be dead, and that works just fine for Reinard Ackerman who holds no interest in reclaiming the name and that which comes along with it. You may as well say Julius' son really is dead.
Adelina Paciscor () ( NPC ) - Mother
There's not much known about Adelina Paciscor. Reinard's mother and the one time wife of Julius Paciscor. Despite the high profile of her husband and son, Adeline has never been known for anything worth a story. You could say she kept to herself I guess. Now, I called her 'one time wife' because rumor has it she and Julius are no longer together. She resides still at his estate, but not as his wife.
Lianshi () ( NPC ) - The Nurturing Maid
This maid-servant to the Paciscor family was probably more of a mother to young "Reinar" than his own mother was. Now notice that we're talking about a lovely young girl just around seven years older than her ward, so it may not surprise you when I say that the growing lad may have had a crush on the woman when he started discovering women.
Eira Carter () - Shooting Star
It goes without saying that Reinard and Eira's relationship started in a very unconventional way. She was a naive young woman and he was a wanted criminal. Those circumstances led their first 'attempt' to end in broken hearts and wounded egos, and while time doesn't heal all wounds it certainly helps. The lover's second try at a relationship was not without its bumps, yet their feelings for each other persevered and their love blossomed. Interestingly enough, Eira rejected Reinard's first marriage proposal: The man thought to surprise her with an act, yet the young girl was not moved; She wanted him to gain her parent's approval before they tied up the knot and to make sure both of them were ready. In spite of those hurdles, Reinard is very comfortable with the idea of sharing a life with the Ul'dahn woman, even when that means to 'play nice' with the law so Eira does not get in trouble. His nickname for her came from him viewing the woman as his guiding light whenever he is at a loss. Reinard's past caught up to them both in the form of Julius Paciscor, Reinar Paciscor's father. His emergence and threat he represented provoked Reinard to call off the wedding and their relationship, reasoning that keeping her safe was to keep her away. Naturally, the young lady did not take kindly to his idea, which broke both their engagement as well as her heart. The last he heard of her she had departed to Thavnair.
Elkhe Juib () - Other half of the Coin
Elkhe and Reinard met when he was still Reinar Paciscor. Back then he was no criminal either, but a young dreamer just out from under his father's thumb, hoping to see the world and learn of it. Of course his first stop was the Academy where he would meet an equally brilliant Miqo'te, with whom he would develop a rivalry and then something more. You could say this was the start of his "Miqo'te curse". The relationship carried on for a couple of years and then fell apart, and they would only meet again many years later back in Eorzea, only to realize they still had something or another for each other. Whatever that was, its safe to say only they can answer properly.
Auralia Rhotana/Roswyn Valhuri ($) - Crime Princess
This little bundle of trouble wrapped up in a pretty red bow crossed paths with Reinard more than once. Not the way you and I may cross on the street, but she literally entered his life as two different people on two separate occasions. First time involved a rather troublesome case that included a megalomaniac man. The second time... Eh it was a bit more tame and you could even call it romantic. They developed feelings for each other and had a fiery relationship, even if short lived. Turns out criminals aren't all that interested in getting tied up, and in this case Roswyn was the most professional of the two, a true workaholic. They went their separate ways, obviously, but they kept in touch sometimes conducting business together.
Eratika Bajhiri () - Ex-wife and Disguise Mistress
You put a ring to it and you think that is it, only to realize the universe has a sense of humor and you are the joke! Reinard met this lovely young Miqo'te (The third one he ran into up to that point. See the pattern?) as no more than business partners. She was a specialist that he often hired for his scores. Dexterous, very good with disguises and fake IDs. What started as a few raids led to something deeper and more meaningful and the two wind up in a rocket powered airship straight up in the relationship scale, bonding just a few moons after they started dating. They burned up like a flare; Intense! But short lived. Nobody really knows what happened at this point, really. The two went off to Dravania when Reinard became a wanted man, but only he came back, and without his airship to boot. He told a few close friends they had a fight and split paths, but who knows what's he keeping out of the history books.
Iasmin Rey () - Little Sister
They say you can't choose the family you're born with, but you can certainly pick some strays along the way and add them to the list. Though they're not actual siblings, Reinard and Iasmin's relationship grew to become akin to something like that. She was lost and without memory, looking for a brother she didn't even remember, and he was there when she needed him to be. Likewise when Reinard needed it, Iasmin was there to support him whether it was to help with his problems with the law or just offer a friendly ear... Or horn. Neither of them knew who was actually the oldest or youngest of the pair, but they seem to have reached an understanding of a sort on their own, with Reinard assuming the 'big brother' role.

Acquaintances, Allies and Enemies

Alexander Richards () - Unstoppable Force
Alexander and Reinard's fight was the start of a small adventure. Small, but tied to a much larger drama which I will tell you about some other time. Suffice to say they stand as the opposites to each other and that came out very clearly when they fought. Brawl versus Brain. Strength versus Speed. They fought a few other times since then, but in a more friendly capacity, without actually trying to kill one another. Seems that's all they do when they meet, which isn't very often I'll tell you that.
Averill Rooks () - The Berserker
Details!
Ayahia Bladesong () - The Bardic Thief
One of the few Miqo'te that Reinard did not develop a relationship with. I know, right!? I was surprised too... Anyway these two met as co-workers in the Order of the Blood Rose. Not a lot of interaction at first, but when they did, they hit it off as fast friends. Loyal even. Ayahia was one of the few that came forth and willingly helped Reinard when he was a criminal sought out by half of the Alliance, lending her skills and talents for his use. As with every women, Reinard was seen trading charms towards the girl, only to be answered with friendly jabs. Take of that what you will.
Aysa Farland () - Monk Prototype
This strong specimen of a fine woman met Reinard during his time with the Pathfinders. She had been partially blind of an eye and the good doctor made restored her eyesight, and in her gratitude Aysa agreed to go on a date with him. For whatever reason the two ended up sparring together during said date and after half a bell and a few gallons of sweat, Reinard emerged victorious. Their relationship didn't have a chance to develop beyond that as Aysa departed the Pathfinders, though the two met again almost half an year later when Reinard joined with Glowfly Exchange.
Benedict Walker () - The Old Veteran
Reinard and Ben didn't have much interaction with each other. They met through a mutual acquaintance and the little contact they had was often through this friend. But even then Reinard offered the older man a measure of respect for the obvious experience he had to offer, and the often sound advice he imparted.
Corbi Slader () - Title
Details!
Eaubront Shopont () - Title
Details!
Eddard Holt () - The Soldier
Even when under Eddard's employee, Reinard paid the man little reverence. You see, both men were well aware of each other's secret criminal activities, and with how little both men seemed to care for each other personally, that made Eddard a 'friendly rival' at best, a liability at worse. Even then, during his time at the Pathfinders and whenever the company faced one of its many challenges, Reinard aided Eddard through honest effort and advise. After all, the Pathfinders were a nice cover for his activities!
I'yato Khai () - Welcoming committee
One of the first people Reinard met when coming to Eorzea. The Miqo'te sort of picked him up at the entrance of Gridania and introduced him to the then active Eorzea Unearthed organization, a research group where Reinard made a few of his first contacts. Though I'yato disappeared from the face of Eorzea, Reinard, to his own surprise, always kept her in memory.
Kassandra Dawn () - Creepy Herbalist
Reinard met Kassandra through their mutual acquaintance, Iasmin Rey. At the time Iasmin was under Kassandra's employee Reinard required a rare specimen of a plant and a way to turn a very special brew of his into a venom-like substance, a fact he shared with Iasmin. Recognizing Reinard's needs lied within Kassandra's talents, the Au Ra introduced the pair, and though Reinard was able to enjoy of Kassandra's service, the man never shook off the feeling that Kassandra was a very dangerous individual.
Khairi Relanah () - Amorous Courtesan
Khairi Relanah is known as a rather renowned courtesan. You know that, I know that. Reinard knows that... But he also knew her as something else. As a friend to many adventurers of all walks of life, Khairi wasn't a stranger to criminal types like Reinard, and when the two crossed paths she was hardly surprised to hear he was a Sky Pirate. She did have very specific ideals with regards to Sky Pirates and their way, and whatever Reinard told her seemed to please her enough that she chose to 'patron' him in a sense, offering shelter and a subtle modicum of support - So long it didn't get her in trouble, of course!
Khoba Lhyr () - Dirtcat
Khoba Lhyr must be one of the most wild and explosive Miqo'te I've ever heard of, and it is a true wonder that Reinard Ackerman, whom I knew to be so serious, focused and rational, could have ever had any form of relationship with the self-entitled Dirtcat. Yet the two became fast friends at their third meeting - The first two meetings were mired with tension about a boring story that I will tell you some other time. Time and again the two have shown to be able and willing to leap into the fire for the other, with Khoba accompanying the pirate in several of his raids and scores when a 'Earth-attuned mage' was needed to cause trouble for someone else. Khoba's main talent, really. Though Reinard felt something of a crush for the unruly Dirtcat, he learned from the lady herself that it was best he did not try and complicate their relationship, a position he eventually came to accept.
Khortani Himaa () - Title
Details!
Khyra Luriihn () - The Raven's Rose
The circumstances surrounding Khyra and Reinard's first meeting is a close guarded secret between the two, but one that brings a blush to the married maiden's face and a grin to Reinard's lips, much to Khyra's chagrin and ultimate outrage. Whatever the truth behind that encounter, the two became fast friends and allies, establishing a secret network called the Raven's Rose through which they share contact, information and the occasional banter when Reinard feels the need to mercilessly tease the Miqo'te.
Kurumimi Kurumi () - The White-Eyed Devil
This diminutive Lalafell made up in power for what she lacked in height. A powerful magician and thaumaturge at the time of her and Reinard's first meeting, she was considered by many to be the 'scary, maniacal Lalafell' of Eorzea Unearthed, because every group has one of those. Reinard, on the other hand, took her frightening, somewhat unstable nature in stride and earned the perhaps affectionate of 'Fox', to which Reinard answered by calling her 'White-Eyed Devil'.
Larileina Duremert () - The Dragoon Lady
Reinard and Larileina had a rather amusing roller-coaster of a relationship. They started off as co-workers which barely acknowledged one another, but as the elezen came to notice him, she took a fancying to the idea that - and this is the best part - that Reinard was gay. This of course meant Larileina would lounge half-naked around the man with little concern, while Reinard casually played it off while never confirming or denying her claims, at least until she caught him with a lady friend. Moons later, Larileina was working as a bounty hunter for the Alliance and the two nearly came to blows as Reinard's criminal activities came under her scrutiny. She always knew he worked outside the law at times but was never able to prove it, and as luck would have it when he DID get a wanted poster with his mug in it, she had taken an official position in the Ishgardian new government, so she just shrugged and didn't care to bring him in!
Llinos Silvernail () - Learned scholar
Another friendly acquaintance of Reinard's more simpler times as a scholar. Also part of the Eorzea Unearthed troupe, Llinos and Reinard briefly worked as researches, sharing on a mutual interest in Spoken races physiology that had them discussing notes for many bells. After the company was disbanded, Reinard and Llinos went their separate ways, although the two still bump into each other from time to time.
Madison Brookstone () - Pathfinder's Lady
These two didn't have the best of relations and that's actually something of a surprise, seeing as we're talking about Reinard and a pretty lady here. See, the thing is when Reinard and Madison crossed paths, she was very stern and intolerant towards unlawful activities... And he was a Pirate! Yes I'm sure you remember this part but I just wanted to make sure. Oh he didn't tell her, of course. He never announces himself as a Sky Pirate, contrary to most others. But the clever woman always suspected something was fishy about him, and often opposed him if she even suspected he was up to no good. But, to be fair, they did maintain a~... Diplomatic relationship aside from the occasional argument.
Melfice Vainchelon () - Mysterious Voidmage
A dark and mysterious figure, whom Reinard long suspected to be a manner of Voidmage. They once made an alliance out of convenience, striking a deal for the purposes of saving a third party. In some ways, given Melfice's then Succubus partner, it was like striking a deal with the devil. Fortunately Reinard came out of it none worse for wear.
Nataru Hirano () - Title
Details!
Nathaniel Salem () - Dirge
Nathaniel and Reinard actually don't know each other. Well, Reinard doesn't know Nathaniel, to be more precise. He knows "Dirge", the name which Nathaniel goes by while in Reinard's presence, and Nathaniel, though fully aware of Reinard's actual name, knows the Pirate as "Strategist". They have worked together in cases which few people care to even acknowledge, for if they did their nights would be plagued with nightmares unlike any other. But they did so under their respective Code Names which left little room for actual involvement.
Ophelia Blanche () - The Dancer
This young Raen Au Ra was as much victim of Reinard's skills as she was of his charm. That is to say, she was once his patient after a grievous injury left bed ridden and under his care for over a moon, and the man's natural charming aura and bedside manner, as well as insistence in his care for her, led her to develop feelings for him. It would have been the perfect love story if Reinard had returned said feelings, but unfortunately this here is more like a comedic drama. In his defense, Reinard let her down easily and the two remained good friends ever since... That is until she lost her memory or some such. Honestly I don't know what happened after that.
Rhion Dhavha () - Wanna Be Rival
This little/not so little Miqo'te first met Reinard on the 'opposite side of the battlefield'. She was playing sidekick to Alexander Richards when the man was tasked with capturing Reinard. The next time they met, Reinard didn't recognize her right away. If he had, he probably wouldn't have helped her! The girl felt guilty and revealed her identity and the role she played, and from then on the two managed to form a manner of friendship. He still helps her from time to time, even though the girl constantly declares she will grow into a Sky Pirate to rival Reinard and shoot his airship down. I tell you, kids these days!
Risty Lowlight () - Dragon Lady
One of the few women whom Reinard was introduced to while being naked, that is, she was naked. Not him. Risty was suffering from a massive aether-related sickness and her sister fetched the good doctor to lend a hand. Risty however was more into the fairer sex and not at all trusting of men, often swearing and promising bloody murder amidst her sickness-induced psychotic episodes. Once stable, the woman discovered considerable respect for Reinard's ability and her curious case kept Reinard around long enough for the pair to discover a their mutual tastes in women, at which point they went out drinking. How does this story end? Well, they leered at women together, obviously!
S'kye S'yoponi () - Starry-eyed Sky
A 'young' Lalafellin woman whom Reinard met during his time at the Pathfinders. Though he didn't have that much of contact with her, he did use her awe-struck adoration of airships and Sky Pirates to pass along an anonymous tip with regards to the Company's enemies while disguised as his Sky Pirate persona, Paciscor. On the same occasion he incidentally fueled the girl's dreams of gaining an airship and beginning her own adventures, informing her, much to the girl's glee, that Sky Pirates 'make their own rules' and aren't limited to being 'evil criminals', but can, indeed, be the 'Good guys'.
Tera Stone () - Title
Details!
Tsukiko Yukimura () - Ice Queen
Reinard's boss during the time spent working with the Order of the Blood Rose. Though their relationship never went beyond a mere professional acquaintance, Reinard was always very appreciative of the woman's strong assets.
Vanir Calad (?) - Metal Knight
Few people are aware of the true relationship between Reinard and Vanir... And I'm not one of them. Sorry, you'll have to ask about this one to the one of them.

Yvenalise Tachibana ($) - Ashen Haired Huntress
Reinard's Glowfly Exchange official boss and one time hunting partner. He met her as a co-worker in the Pathfinders, the pair maintaining a good and amicable relation, even going hunting together for a mysteriously powerful Coeurl nicknamed White Ghost for his uniquely snow-colored hide. Though Reinard never understood how, Tachibana seemed to have a great respect and trust in Reinard and his abilities, which came in hand when the man was wanted for the authorities. Tachibana lent him a hand through her then newly founded Glowfly Exchange, and in response Reinard brokered a lucrative deal with his father's company, the Paciscor Trading Company. The old man didn't know that at the time of course! After the deal, Reinard asked to join the Exchange in an official capacity.

Personal RP Limits
I will roleplay dark, grim, horror and mature themes, even erotic ones. I will roleplay (with due and proper development) romance. Comedic, slide-of life, casual bar roleplay. Long story arc as well as short story arcs. Really, most stuff is okay. Brutal violence, injury, maiming and similar things are also okay provided the correct situation presents itself.
I will not roleplay character death, mine or anyone else's, unless it serves a specific purpose to the story. I'm a firm believer that character's death is the end of a story and needs a very good reason/explanation behind it. Exceptions lie within the concept of 'inescapable situations' where something goes horribly wrong for someone and there's no other way out.
About plots I'm both a player and designer of plots. I quite enjoy taking cooking some plot up, though if I am the only one behind running a plot they will be more small scale and intimate to the characters involved. Large scale plots that I design will always involve co-GMing to maintain a measure quality that I'm satisfied with.

About Me as an RPer
This wiki is mostly written in the form of a narrator or storyteller passing on information about Reinard. It is not meant as a way to freely provide information however, it is merely a writing style that entertains me.
That said! Some of the information found here CAN in fact be discovered. I won't label what can and can not. Too much hassle. Just use common sense or, if in doubt, contact me and ask.
My contact information is, on Skype: Merak (Reinard) - and Discord: Merak/Reinard#4741. If you add me, do introduce yourself on the act, especially if I don't know you at all. It's just good manners, right?
