Appearance & Personality

A middle-aged Elezen of palpable gravitas and little expression, this man — Rosaire de Saincourant but more widely known as Rosaire Ledigne — leaves little doubt as to the reason he received the epithet "the Staid."

While he is significantly shorter and heavier than the average Ishgardian Wildwood, many still describe him as having an ominous, intimidating presence, with an unflinching ice-blue stare that bores through to a sinner's soul. Therefore it can be quite surprising when the man, usually quiet and reserved, finally engages in conversation and reveals an accommodating, polite, even kindly manner, with courtesy afforded nearly everyone, lowborn and unbeliever included. And yet, something about him — his unsmiling eyes, perhaps, or a sense of detachment from any sentiments professed — tends to leave people uneasy.

Biography

The second son of a minor Ishgardian noble house descended from a branch of the Fortemps, Rosaire entered Saint Endalim's Scholasticate at an early age, receiving a classical religious education and minor orders. Not long after graduating with a seat in his year's Trinity, he transferred to the service of the Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine; soon enough he was appointed a Holy Inquisitor by the then-reigning Archbishop. From there, the young man — not even thirty summers — began a swift climb in power and influence.

To those who encountered him outside the Tribunal, Rosaire — who had begun to refer himself not with his House name but with the chosen byname "Ledigne" — became known as an Inquisitor with an uncommon dedication to evidence and reason, one who would pursue the truth with caution and persistence both. His impartiality and investigative skills led him many times to exonerate the falsely accused; equally as many times did those same virtues enable him to identify and execute the true heretics behind acts of terror across Coerthas. On this basis would many nobles framed by rivals, as well as commoners disregarded by others, speak highly of him, even describe him as a paragon of justice.

Inside the Church and Tribunal, opinions were more mixed; while Rosaire proved a pious servant of the Holy See, his rapid rise as well as his tendency to intrude on others' investigations earned him some enmity among his peers. But despite his rivals' best efforts, it proved impossible to find a scandal with which to disgrace him, so immaculate did he maintain his record; indeed, it was far more common for those who sought to destroy him to have their own shameful secrets coincidentally revealed.

But about seven years before the Calamity, Rosaire was stricken with a serious illness, and in the year it took him to recover, new factions had taken power within the Tribunal. Stonewalled in his attempts to return to work, he was forced into a state of quasi-retirement, although he has refused to make it official.

Since then he has mostly kept to himself, attending Church services and, occasionally, the Tribunal, but otherwise living quietly at home. Only in the last year or so has he emerged into the public sphere once again.

Common Rumors (Easily overheard)
  • "There are precious few in all of the Offices who can compare to him in insight and commitment to justice!" -Inquisitorial Aide Valroit Faucheux
  • "A lovely customer, always polite and asking after the children. 'Tis a pity not all highborn show their lessers such kind courtesy." -pâtissier, the Pillars
Moderate Rumors (More difficult to overhear)
  • "Lot of them so-called holy men carry around more secret sin than the sods they berate from the pulpit. The Inquisitor, though — he isn't one of those types. He's a good man. Years back, a highborn lord in with the dragons tried to frame one of my girlfriends for his doings. She didn't have tuppence t' rub together, and the Inquisitor saved her and had that bastard burned. I never forgot that." -an anonymous Lady of the Night, Foundation
  • "Affairs? Embezzlement? Hired hits? Nope, nothing — record's completely clean, spotless as a virgin. Though if you'd ask me, that's more suspicious than anything else..." -information broker's commentary
  • "I understand that there's little love lost between the Lord of House Saincourant and his younger brother. I hear the Inquisitor will snub an invitation if his lordship is expected to attend as well." -overheard at a Fortemps soirée
Rare Rumors (Very difficult to overhear)
  • "You want to know why that man suddenly retired from active duty? Well, I heard that he had some sort of nervous breakdown..." -whispered in the Tribunal
  • "Ten years ago? A major power player; spies all across Coerthas, fingers in all sorts of pies. Today? Toothless. Hasn't even had charge of a case since Charibert rose to prominence." -a retired bishop, spoken in confidence
