He proved to be a poor weaver as a child. Though his father did eventually manage to force some of the craft into Kazukata, he preferred more athletic pursuits, and found himself more at home with the town's hunters, whom he regularly snuck off to join. By the time he had come of age, he had successfully avoided inheriting the family business, which his father exasperatedly delegated to Kazukata's younger brother. Instead, Kazukata was set to become a trapper. Or, at least, that had been the plan before the Garlean Empire invaded Doma. |

| + | Determined to shut out the Garleans, Kazukata immediately left the mountains to join the Doman army in defense of his homeland. There, he was handed a spear and thrown onto the frontlines, where he quickly proved himself a competent fighter. He fought bravely through the majority of the invasion, but the war turned against the Domans, and Kazukata soon found his country conquered by the Garleans. Having miraculously survived the war and avoided Garlean retribution, Kazukata tried to return to a civilian life and do his best to ignore his new overlords.

| ||

| − | But when the Emperor passed on and the Doman revolt began in earnest, the allure of a free Doma was too much for Kazukata to resist. He recalled the fire of his youth, the passion with which he had fought to keep his country safe, and felt his blood boil with vigor he had forgotten. He could not remain still, not when his country needed him, and he left to enlist with the revolutionary forces, heedless to the protests of his wife. | + | But when the Emperor passed on and the Doman revolt began in earnest, the allure of a free Doma was too much for Kazukata to resist. Kazukata once more ended up on the frontlines, spear in hand, and was assigned to Lady Yugiri's main army. He received minor distinctions for valor in the field and, in the war's waning months, was promoted to Corporal. As the war turned against the Domans, Kazukata was assigned to the retreating Doman army's rearguard, where he frequently was forced to contend with the Garleans nipping at the army's heels. In the final days of the war, outside the gates of the capital itself, Kazukata received a grievous wound, a deep sword thrust between his ribs that miraculously missed his major organs, and was carried from the field. He didn't awake until two days later, and found himself on one of the Doman refugee ships, his homeland naught but ash behind him. Just like that, the war had ended while he had been unconscious. He would never again see his home, or his wife, who, if rumors were anything to go off of, had most likely been executed just for being married to him. Everything he had ever known or lived for had come crashing down while he had been asleep. The loss crippled Kazukata, and he wouldn't recover until long after he came to Eorzea.

| Kazukata once more ended up on the frontlines, spear in hand, and was assigned to Lady Yugiri's main army.
